View Full Version : User Map Videos - Complete Plays

Just like the title says, post your videos of complete user map play throughs for Duke 3D.

Here are the ground rules:

It must be a video of Duke 3D
It must be a user map (not from one of the original episodes, and not from a commercial add-on)
The video must show a complete, non-stop play of the map from beginning to end. No jump cuts, no saves. The video can be broken up into multiple segments, however.
No cheats!
The video CAN be of a TC and/or modification, but you must specify which mod(s) you are using. Using a mod could be considered cheating, but let's not debate that here.
The game should be played on either Come Get Some or Damn I'm Good if at all possible.
It doesn't have to be a speed run or an exceptional session. In fact, it can be more entertaining to watch someone struggle and make mistakes. These videos can be useful for several reasons: (1) they are fun to make and watch, (2) they advertise maps and mods, (3) they can serve as walkthoughs. Just think, if enough of these are amassed, they could be used as a library for previewing Duke maps!

I will get the party started with a video in my next post.

The first video is of the first map of Brave New World, a small episode made by Mikko Sandt a few years back. I played this using my own Duke Plus mod, but I turned off most of the optional features so as not to distort the original gameplay very much. EDIT: I should have mentioned that the altered gun art and sounds are part of the Brave New World episode, they are not part of Duke Plus.

A very interesting idea. I'd like to jump in on this but I don't have a clue as to how to make a video while playing a map. Is there special software for this?

Yeah, you need Fraps or an equivalent (and I don't know of a good equivalent). And it can't be the trial version because that will stop recording every thirty seconds. I know this will limit participation quite a bit but it still seems to me that it's an idea whose time has come. Note that the movie files are huge (on the order of several gigs) before being compressed and recording while playing (if it is the same machine doing both, as in my case) will cut your framerate by about 50% for an added challenge.

I like this idea...
Although, we should also inlcude a link to where to get the map that is played imo, if possible...

Providing a link to the right recording software would be great too, so people can get started :)
I have never played a single user created map ever, this could get me started though...

I've made a bunch of stuff on YouTube but not on the higher difficulties. Can't do that stuff with no saves!

will cut your framerate by about 50% for an added challenge.

Framerate problems can be sorted out by lowering the resolution to the smallest size. It runs very smooth while recording at 320*240/320*200.

I got no problem running FRAPS at 1440x900 with modern games such as Splinter Cell Double Agent, just be sure to lower the fraps framerate down to 30 or 25.

I might record some Duke map playthroughs if I find any interesting maps to play.

I don't see how this fits in Duke 3d modifications, it's not about modifying the game, it's about recording playthroughs. It's like the speedruns, they are in the regular Duke3d forum.

They can be in regular Duke 3D or a mod or TC -- player's choice. But I agree; I don't see why it had to be moved. I was hoping to get people who browse the regular Duke forum to try some user maps and now they won't notice the thread.

Sounds like a good idea but saving should be allowed IMO :)

Keeping the thread on track....

Here's a playthrough of the second level of Brave New World, starting from a saved game made right after the end of the last movie:

Cool idea!

As for alternatives to Fraps, I found a program called Taksi (http://taksi.sourceforge.net/) which does the same thing but doesn't record sound. With the right codec (Intel Indeo Video Raw) I didn't notice notable framerate dropping at 320x240@20fps (was playing at 640x480 but recording was at both dimensions halved). Recording sound in the background was also no problem. File size was approximately 1GB per 10 minutes.
My computer isn't high-end either (suffices to say that it was bought 08-2005)...
Of course, there's also the alternative of hooking your video card to the good ol' VCR. :)

Expect a video of my all-time favourite WARZ.MAP if I succeed mixing video and sound.

How did you record sound?

Ok I'm not going to bother posting movies of levels 3 and 4 of Brave New World, but here is a movie of the 5th and last level:

I made one big mistake in this video and almost died. At one point you'll see I'm facing a battlelord just holding the rocket launcher and getting killed -- what happened was I didn't pick up the ammo for the RPG which was sitting right next to it, so I ran out of ammo. Other than that a pretty good run (almost a speed run because I just ran past a lot of the monsters). It was the first time I completed the level. The one hard part is the platforms where you have to strafe jump to make it.

How did you record sound?
With GoldWave. And with the general output set as recording input in the mixer.
edit: This (http://www3.picturepush.com/photo/a/715606/img/Picture-Box/taksi-setup.png) is how I set up the audio.

Nice job! :) I especially appreciated the aerial pipebomb action. I remember playing that map about a year ago when I was looking for maps to include with my DNWMD mod. The map looks like great fun if you know where to go next. But I didn't, and found it to be too sprawling and open ended for my tastes -- there was too much dead time while I was trying to find areas I hadn't explored yet.

Heh, I hadn't realized that you were playing it on Damn I'm Good until it got to the end and it said enemies killed N/A. Now I know why you kept blowing up their bodies.

Technical issues: What is your in-game brightness level? I could barely see the movie until I turned up the brightness on my end. Also, is it just me or has PicturePush been incredibly slow lately? It took forever to stream that thing.

Movie of Factory X, a map by Vector.

This is a complex map so the movie can serve as a walkthrough. It is YouTube, so the quality is low, but I can post a higher quality version if it is too hard to see.

Well, it's exactly for my tastes... I love open, nonlinear maps... you can do countless runs of the thing, and all of them are a bit different.

It's at the middle of the bar, but I think that's not the issue. Ever since Eduke32 switched to hardware gamma, the screenshots were much darker than the game on the screen, so I guess it goes the same for video capture. But I'll keep that in mind...
As for PicturePush, that may be my fault. I don't know much of video codecs, so I just ran it through one that sounded good (MPEG4, though I've read that it's not a codec but a format ... oh well). I don't even know whether the streamed version is any different from what I uploaded, which is 67 megs big.
