View Full Version : ISPs confirm the END of the internet in 2012

Bell Canada and TELUS (formerly owned by Verizon) employees officially confirm that by 2012 ISP's all over the globe will reduce Internet access to a TV-like subscription model, only offering access to a small standard amount of commercial sites and require extra fees for every other site you visit. These 'other' sites would then lose all their exposure and eventually shut down, resulting in what could be seen as the end of the Internet.

So Net Neutrality has failed? I'd like to see this "confirmation" corroborated, but if it's true it's absolutely terrifying.
I see a whole bunch of stuff floating around about 2012 from the Internet going down, to Nibiru, to the Illuminati and so on. I wonder if there's some sort of connection that something big is going to happen in 2012, or whether it's all just to scare us. Maybe that internet thing is true, but some of the other stuff is kind of fear based. I should phone my ISP and ask them about that.

^ I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not. This is definitely a serious threat, and it's not hard to imagine it happening sometime soon. The Internet is the single greatest invention of the last 200 years, and has absolutely revolutionized information. It would be horrible to see it changed to the way things used to be, with some having access to information and others being completely unable to learn. The Internet democratizes information in an entirely revolutionary way, and it's such an amazing opportunity for humanity to really see the world in a different way. I can't imagine anything worse than getting rid of this one great source of hope.
I just phoned my ISP and they said it was an American only thing. My ISP doesn't plan on participating in it, so AFAIK, it does not affect Canada. Least what he told me.

Read the quote in the first post, those are Canadain ISPs...
Apperantly American ISPs are in this also...
It won't work.. all it takes is one ISP to not do it for this plan to fail. That one ISP will then have everyone jump over to them and the other ISP's will have to revert back to the normal system to even survive.
Google is a big supporter of net neutrality and I can almost guarantee that they will start up that "one ISP" if noone else did. It'd also make them a tonne more money and they'll have a lot more control over things as well.
Anyway not going to happen.

An ISP can only have so many people though...
If a single ISP in Isreal decided not to do this, someone in Mexico would still be screwed...

Well, such model wouldn't work in Europe for example. I only see their own benefits in this, meaning Verizon. Of course they wan't to limit access, and get more money based on use.

I get the impression you want to believe this.
I'm rather sceptic about it. I'll start to worry when it's more evident that something like this is actually going to happen.

In the US a lot of local or regional companies lease phone, tv, and internet service at wholesale from larger ones and then compete with them for coverages, so make sure yours isn't leasing from one of the companies opting in to it. :o
They didn't mention my cable/internet/phone provider either. So I am willing to bet this has something to do with Bell and Verizon and there traffic shaping eskapaides. They can't have it there way so now there going to mind **** there subscribers and people that don't know any better.
All I have to say is Bell go look for the crystal skulls, all 13 of them you may be able to save the earth while there on there mighty crusade.
I smell a big pile of BS, what's next? Microsoft is going to declare PC's are dead because Vista didn't have it's way with the wallets of many?
Besides net neutrality is a myth, what is to stop me from tryping in the ip of the website? they may be able to block the DNS sure, but the IP?, there are ways to get around that, dynamic ip's and ip spoofing seem to come to mind also setting up a box that is in another country that doesn't have these restrictions in place and just rely the data from that box over. :D also what is to stop me from encrypting data over a tunnel?
It's nice and all to dream you can do something like that, but unless everyone at once does it, it can't happen, because as soon as you have access to another box that doesn't have these restrictions, you have just defeated the ISP's blockouts.

Bell Canada can go suck a large floppy one. They are very quickly losing customers in Canada due to their poor service and "Our way or the highway" attitude. They can do whatever they want, doesn't mean every ISP will follow.
Too much money is made through ad revenues and simplicity of setting up websites. If people were taxed to death over it's use and websites became the property of the rich people would go apeshit. It's not going to happen.

"Our webs are down, sir. We can't log in!
Which webs?
All of them.
They've penetrated our codes walls. They're stealing the internet!
We'll need to hack all IPs simultaneously! "

Bell Canada. . . I hope that isn't related to the American phone conglomerate that was Bell Systems and is now South Bell Company, or is it AT&T, or Cingular. . . oh, wait, it is AT&T.
Yeah, this won't work. . . the ISPs that do this will lose customers and then collapse.

According to this (http://www.shaw.ca/en-ca/AboutShaw/Careers/Who+We+Are.htm) Shaw does not provide internet service to the US or anywhere else. They are a Canadian owned and operated company. Not to mention one of their corporate head offices is right here in Calgary. Although probably not the main one.

I don't like any of the large ISP's in Canada so far. But here in Ottawa a protest already went ahead at the parliament building on net neutrality so I bet this would go over reeeeeeeeal well if it went ahead. But I doubt it. I think their would be a huge public out cry

I was just saying make sure they are not leasing their intarweb from a larger company or "competitor" at wholesale.

This is hilarious! I can't believe there are people actually taking this seriously. Let's get back to reality. That plan would never work. And as others have said, what is it with the year 2012??? Everybody calm down, nothing is going to happen in 2012. It'll be just like every other year.

All hail pie... our one true leader
I'm going to check out this may 5th, 2000 date. I never heard of this one, but back in Newfoundland we had some crack pots driving around claiming christ was coming in 2000... repent now!! What's even funnier is one idiot spray painted his car with these warnings and when 2000 came and went my friend was actually the one who had to repaint the car (he works in a car shop) :D

I was a doomsayer in the late 1990's with that asteroid that passed in between the Earth and Moon. Lots of people in school were scared, and I had never been calmer or happier than when that piece of impending doom was looming overhead. Simple reason was I looked forward to the end of the world, because it couldn't be worse than highschool. I was terribly dissapointed. I'm not now. Glad it didn't happen now, but then, gawd what a letdown that was. :p

Wow, this is a Wall*E cube. This is one step closer to that one world government crap. But it seems that things like this are becoming more and more prevalent in our Post 9/11 world. I was listening to the radio on my drive home from Erie PA from working this weekend yesterday and there was a radio station preaching anti-Muslim propaganda about how they'll be the one world Unified Church that will give rise to the Anti-Christ, what the heck is this garbage. It's people like that, that give Christians a bad name. I mean come on all this gloom and doom just makes me think of one thing:
Something, Something, Something, Something, Something, Something, Something, Something, Something, Something, Something, Something, Something, Something, Something, Something, Something, Something, Something, Something, Something, Something, Something.
It’s the end of the world as we know it.
It’s the end of the world as we know it.
It’s the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine.
Something, Something, Something, Something, Something, Something, Something, Something, Something, Something,
Leonard Bernstein. Something, Something, Something, Something, Something, Something, Something, Something, Something, Something, Something, Something, Something, Something, Something, Something, Something, Something,
Something, Something, Something, right? Right.
It’s the end of the world as we know it.
It’s the end of the world as we know it.
It’s the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine...fine...
