Just out of curiosity, why do you have the nickname that you do? I think it could be interesting to hear the reasoning behind everyone's handle (if you want to of course).

To be fair, my name (Sinsear) didn't really have a dramatic origin. Obviously, it's a play of words off of "sincere", but spelled differently (i.e. "Sear", as in "Searing Heat" or something of that order). I thought it had its own little bit of irony to it.

That's funny, I was just thinking about posting this topic. Anyway, when I was born, my dad said that I looked like a Badger from those children books. So that's where mine came from.

I was watching some show on Area51, while registering for these boards. It then showed the super secret Aurora, a super sonic plane. Well, i just mixed the to and got Aurora51.

Uncle Duke
12-14-1998, 08:37 PM
I was reading The People's Doonesbury: Notes From Underfoot when I registered for the board. Naturally, I thought of Duke Nukem, and that made me think of Uncle Duke from the strip. Since he was my favorite character, due mainly to his outlandishnes, I chose his name for mine.

I didn't notice this until several weeks after it happened, but I also registered to use the Bulletin Board on the Doonesbury Electronic Town Hall at [url]www.doonesbury.com[/i] the same day, and my handle there is Dopefish . . .

If you ever see me anywhere else on the internet, I'll be under the name "BadChicken", except two places: on the Internet Gaming Zone, I'm "MarvinBot", and on "Deep Blurting: The MST3k Message Board", the name's TomSerVo.

Whew . . . i feel schizophrenic, now.

hellchicken

My nickname has no real origin! Whenever I play in a multiplayer game (lets say Quake II) and somebody is about to kill me, I turn into a chicken and run like hell (easy, isn't it?). It sometimes even works, but usualy I die anyway. Well, nevermind!
My other nickname/callsign is DevilMan (no, I'm not obsessed with hell or Satan).

AXE
12-14-1998, 09:19 PM
I had just rented the "Hackers" movie when I named myself, so I was on a hacker kick. I figured, "what hacks besides a nerd?" Since "Paul Bunyon" or "lumberjack" would sort of suck as a nickname, I chose A-X-E, but later shortened it to AXE, because those damn hyphens slowed down my WPM rate A LOT!!!

I am known as SpoonMaster just about everywhere else, except on sailor mercury's chat room, where I combined my two handles to be: SpoonAxe!!!

SpoonMaster came from the fact that people in this classroom I am in would steal my cookies from inside my sack lunches (cafeteria food should be discarded at a toxic waste dump, not at a lunch line with eager children waiting to get a free meal, but I digress...). Actually, it was the teacher!!! Anyway, I finally started leaving threatening notes written on brown paper bags in the fridge saying that "if you touch my food, I will disembowel you with a spoon!" I eventually started Signing them "SpoonMan," and even taping a plastic spoon to the bag. They never touched my lunch again, but spoonman is already taken as most handles on the 'net. So I changed it up to SpoonMaster, and have lived happily ever after.

Also, I think it was the November issue of PC Gamer, but on the last page where they have that tiny little stupid story, it tells about some girl walking in a park, and then is "threatened" by a guy with a grapefruit spoon!! LMAO!!!

Doppleganger
12-14-1998, 09:47 PM
Well Doppleganger has been my nick for a long time, ever since the days of real BBSes. I chose my nick because I had been playing Magic the Gathering all summer and I found that the Vesuvian Doppleganger kicked ass when you used him right. Anyhow I shortend it and that is what you see today.

Doppleganger

fool
12-14-1998, 10:21 PM
In death matches and most chat things I'm in (like ICQ), my name is "fool". It's just something I kinda developed from tricking people in multiplayer. People will think I'm an idiot one minute but then they step into my trap. Heh heh...(I'm not that great but it sounds good...)
Someplaces like IRC and Yahoo chat, my name is "Monogoggle" (Chop off the "e" for IRC, ; They won't let me have that long of a name) which was basically my alternative to "fool" since that name is gauranteed to be taken. I logged onto IRC and it told me to change my name, I looked around the room and saw the box with my chem lab goggles in it and it said "Monogoggle". I figured nobody would have that name so I used it.
In even other places on the net like some Delphi bulletin boards, my name is "Atook". Atook is the character Ringo Star plays in "The Caveman", a really cheesey but fun caveman flick they show on TNT or TBS sometimes. My sister introduced me to the movie shortly before I tried to post a message on a forum and of course "fool" was taken.
Whenever I'm on AOL (which is rare), my name is MattatVT. I think it's really lame but my dad being the head of that account gave me the name and I was stuck with it. Basically derived from my real name which is Matt and the I go to VT (Virginia Tech for those not in the know http://3drealms.3dportal.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif ).
I think that's about it. http://3drealms.3dportal.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif

Have more nicks here, but this one sounds funny (it's a common middle name from the old days). I often use it in games like in Duke, it's pretty funny I think to get shot by Petronella instead of 'Mr. Chainsaw' or 'Skullcracker'.

I don't know why I use it here though!?

I made up my nickname from a story I was developing. In the story, Skythunder is the God of storms, and I happen to love storms.
So when a few of my friends read my story, they decided I was Skythunder. And the 1 stands for the one and only.

Private Ale was the title of a Green Day song from one of their earlier releases. For the uninformed, ale is defined as an alcoholic beverage brewed from an infusion of malt and flavored with hops, sugar, etc., being heavier and more alcoholic than beer. I don't know why I took the name exactly, but I kind of like it. Drink up.

My nick originated from a test I had when I first started out on GeoCities in early 1996. Since AOL didn't allow 'bad' words as nicks, I thought I'd try it with Geocities with pc_bomber. It worked, so I kept it just because it sounded pretty cool at the time. Then, around summer 1997 I shortened it to PCB. It now has three meanings: Personal Computer Bomber (although I am not one), Panama City Beach (my favorite place to pick up girls) http://3drealms.3dportal.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif, and the last one, which I won't reveal, is my first/last initials with location. Well, I hope that explains the origin of my nick. Later all.

I began using "slaybak" as a handle when i first got my TEN account bak in `96, "slayback" was allready taken so I just dropped the c, i think it looks better anyhow.
Slayback, the name i was going for orginaly is the name of a little known marvel comic character that mainly appeared in the short lived Deadpool serise.

My first handle, bak in the old Real BBS days, around in 91-92, was Amaga Red, a slight variation of the marvel comic character Omega Red. I used that name untill i switched to slaybak in 96, i use to keep up with marvel comics quite abit but not much anymore..

my nick on IRC is also Slaybak, and I use it for everything else with the exception of Everquest where i go by Zshar-Ashnhagog, kind of like Shub-Nigguroth from necronomic lore..

My nick name comes from Unreal. I always used the rifle in Unreal deathmatchs, about 80% of the time I decapitate someone with my rifle, that is my favorite weapon. Usually when someone starfed, I hit them perfectly in the head with my rifle. I originally wanted to be called sniper but it was already taken. But originally, I got the name Rifleman when I made up a story in my mind, there was a "rifleman" that was on a horse, and he used to fight these punk guys on these motorcycles with rocket launchers and such, he always won and defended this small town from raiders and monsters after the asteriod caused a massive nuclear explosion (Apocolypse) and he defended his people well against all these nuclear mutunts and raiders. Because he was too good and always saved the day, that was why I named it after him.

Originally when I made my first appearance on the Net, I was Viper. Big snore. There were about 5,000,000 other Vipers, so I changed to Ogopogo (some of you may remember him.) But then this Ogopogo fad caught on and before I knew it there were almost as many Ogopogos as Vipers! So I was experimenting on mIRC, and I thought Volt9000 had a nice ring to it (since I couldn't be 9000Volts.) I think Volt9000 sounds better anyways.

I chose my name based upon the silliest things...my cat (shadow) and the word jet combined nicely to form shadowjet, which happened to barely fit in the terminal velocity name for multiplayer. When I signed up for my first e-mail account, shadowjet was taken. I thought of some simple numbers, etc. and eventually liked the sound of "white". That was it. (4 years ago)

This was the beginning of a beautiful concept. I began to chat, e-mail people, get "in" and kept using shadowjet_white. Eventually, I was chatting on Yahoo everyday (quite a lamer eh? http://3drealms.3dportal.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif) and began to notice the abundance of "shadows"; people with "shadow" in their name. So I formed the League of Shadows. I recruited over 40 people in 2 years, designed a web page, held chat meetings (not well attended due to peoples schedules) and rallied all the "shadows" who were online into the fewest rooms possible. This really confused people because they could no longer refer to a person as just "shadow".

Though this was fun for a while, it began to suck away my time, I began to neglect it, and it was soon disbanded. Ho hum...

Hmm, welp... Might as well put mine up here.

It all started back in the days of deathmatching in Descent and Duke Nukem 3D. I particularly enjoyed hunting people to the death. This was is an art that I still enjoy today in deathmatching. In which, that is the real originality of my name today.

Most people will think that I'm obsessed with dinosaurs or Jurassic Park. Although the velociraptor is my favorite dinosaur and Jurassic Park is one of my favorite movies, the real reason for my name was the 'hunt' factor in deathmatch.

So, of course it (Raptor) was taken by 3 million people on AOL a couple years ago, so I added the '3434.' Since I've been all around the Internet, Raptor3434 is taken on virtually everything! Whether it be MSN web servers, UBB message boards, 6 different Internet Service Providers, to ICQ. The thing about my name is that it stays the same! If you see a Raptor3434, it's always me. Raptor3434 will probably always exist as long as I do.

So there you have it... latez all!

But it would be stupid to change nicknames now. On the internet that's usually the only thing people recognize you by, so if you change it, it's like you're a stranger..

It started on one of my birthdays, I got a Gumby birthday card (Monty Python 'My Brain Hurts' Gumby not that weird clay thing) I tought it would be a good idea to scan the picture in and make a Quake player model skin with it. I liked the idea of playing as a Gumby and I kept going on about them, so eventually I just used the nickname Gumby.
I recently found that there are a HUGE amount of people calling themselves Gumby on the internet, so I might change it to I.B Gumby or J.Y Gumby or something.

Mine came from a movie that I found quite interesting. My other name that I use for deathmatching is ace potato. I like it because it sounds corny, I am the arch rival of my friend ace tomato, and it looks really cool in deathmatch play, exspecially in SW. when one of my friends would call himself "his nads" for the fun of it, then when he killed me, something like "ace potato got beaten like a red-headed step child by his nads". every body in the room would start to fall over laughing. its great.

Whoa... I'm bringing this OLD thread up after awhile, huh? http://3drealms.3dportal.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif

Anyway, as for my story, it all started back when I first began deathmatching in Descent. (Remember, Raptor3434? LOL seems like a long time ago, huh?)

I originally wanted my name to be RazorWing (because I wanted it to have something to do with flying a la Descent), but it juuuust wouldn't fit. So then I changed it to Talon. I kept this name for the looooooongest time when all of a sudden, I heard about Prey and how the main character was "Talon Brave"
So then I was like, "ah crap" and I wanted to change it. I felt being called Talon once Prey was out, would be like calling yourself Duke back in the Doom2 days and then having Duke3d come out. So I had to change it. (I guess I did it a bit prematurely huh? http://3drealms.3dportal.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif )
Anyway, I changed it to DarkTalon and wanted to change my AOL nick to this also, but it was taken! I couldn't believe it. Not wanting to give up my newly changed nick, I just changed the "o" to a "y" and then tried it. Still taken!! Damn those RPG peeps on AOL! Damn them!
Ready to give in, I added a "1" to the end and that's why my nick is DarkTalyn1. Of course, the one is only there some of the time, in deathmatches I often just go as DarkTalyn. Hm, that's it.

BTW Kingomen, you read Piers Anthony as well? Cool!

Now that I'm using my nickname on here, I can explain where it came from...

Long, long ago (about seven or so years) I needed a nickname for CB radio. It was something I was into at the time to talk to my friends at night.

Everyone on CB radio has a handle (as they call them there) and I needed one. I tried several nicknames, none of which I liked.

One day, I was strolling past some National Geographic magazines, when I saw some stingrays on the cover. I suddenly realized that that is quite a cool name for a nickname.

I've used it ever since. As anyone can tell you, I'm not about ready to change my nick either. I've seen other people change their nickname because they wanted a change. Personally, I don't have any plans for changing my nickname.

No no no, I'm not talking about on this board or anything... I'm talking about back when Rap and I used to play Descent with eachother in summer '95 (or somewhere around there) It feels like a long time ago considering all the years full of deathmatches we've played against one another in numerous games.

I got my lame ass name when I first slipped in the DW forums as a newbie. There were some weird people back then, and I wanted to remain as unoticed as possible. I also have no creativity or imagination, another reason I have this name. But when you think about it, not many people choose this name cause it's so boring. For some reason, this name stuck. Don't ask me why. http://3drealms.3dportal.com/ubb/images/icons/blush.gif

I aslo use Eric in some places, cause it's, like my name. http://3drealms.3dportal.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif

Maffu
04-04-1999, 11:02 PM
My real name is Matthew, and there was this guy at school who couldn't pronounce it properly. He said Maffu... And I started using it as my build sig when I made Duke Maps... Now I use it everywhere, although lately it has become case sensitive "MAffU".

Over at Cyberdelia we have Sig Testing Grounds... That's where I try to make some cool sigs.

Here's one of my latest:
http://www.geocities.com/TimesSquare/Galaxy/5598/phat_pics/SigAnim3.gif
The idea of Sig Testing originated in DW forums when we had HTML, that's why I never started one here... :P

Here's how mantis came to be.

I've been running cross-country track for the past 4 years in high school and a little before the beginning of freshman year, the team worked out at one of the college's swimming pool sometimes at night.

After the workout, we used to play some basketball in the deep part of the pool. Since, I'm a fairly small guy, I guess I looked kind of funny treading water and swimming around crazily for the ball and trying to shoot it. So, then in the locker room when some of the teammates were joking around with me, one of the seniors at the time said "Don't say that, he's the praying mantis."

I don't know how, but the name stuck. It's weird how it all started, but it caught onto everyone on the team, and most kids and some teahcers at school call me mantis. http://3drealms.3dportal.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif

Mine, it comes from the Simpsons, in the 132th Episode Spectacular, where they looked back at the old Simpsons.

Troy said "As wacky as they were, there was no one wackier than Captain Wacky, later renamed Homer."

In a report on Homer (the greek) for school, I used the quotation and got caught http://3drealms.3dportal.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif After that, it kind of stuck, and I like it, because it reflects my personality.

Of course, I've been everything from Ensign to Fleet Admiral Wacky, depending on how my teachers felt about me

Don't know why I didn't think of this sooner, but Sinsear, did you know that sincere actually means "Without Wax"? I like to sign my letters like that, as it's more 'wacky' http://3drealms.3dportal.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif

It comes from 2 centuries ago, when the King's letters were signed and sealed with the King's Seal. These used a special kind of substance that was a royal wax, but consider above all other waxes. If some michievous malcreants tried to read the letters, they'd have to duplicate the seal so nobody would notice - and they'd use regualar everyday wax. Hence, the phrase Sincere (sans-cire) meant legitimate.

Without Wax,

Captain Wacky

(now THAT's informative!)

Well I don't really have a great story to tell about how I choose my nick, but here is how it got this way.

My nick used to be just Hunter. I choose it because I consider myself a hunter and I used to go hunting almost everyday when I was a teenager. Also when I play FPS's, I am always huntering for that person that is in the map but I can't seem to find, i.e. I don't camp very often.

Anyway after awhile the name started to seem kind of generic. So I though of Xrays helping the Hunter and added that.

I use it for everything and haven't seen another HunterXray anywhere. I play online games alot: Half-Life Team Fortress, Unreal, and Quake 2 MOD's. My favorite Q2 MOD is ACTION. So there's a very good chance that if you are being hunted in a game and the hunter is HunterXray, it's me! http://3drealms.3dportal.com/ubb/images/icons/smile.gif

Ok my nick, origoannly Hawk, but it was taken almost everywhere so i changed it to KwaH which NO ONE had, but after get msg's adking if i am such and such from milasia or something over 10 times i decided a more english nick is required (for you idtios KwaH is hawk backwards)

So at last i wanted a new nick badly so i opened my trusty worms, virus, torjans, data didlers and other threats to your system book I looks at the glassary, found a bunch of cool things already used then say Logic Bomb,
(not exactly but close enough)
Logic Bomb - similar to a virus but does not replicate, lays dormant ontill certain events cause its malicious code to triger such as a certain date to occur.

Cool i thought so i grabbed the nick ever since and added the capitol B at the end of bomb as a sort of signature if there are others using the same nick.

+ I have a back diesease that curves my back into twisted shapes. It so happened to curve in a backwards S and rapidly make me into a huntchback. The doctors in a mad rush put me into a brace, which tried to limit my back movements, which it did not. I got the name BraceBoy from this.

+ I had to go into sugury to correctly fix my spine (now half of it is metal http://3drealms.3dportal.com/ubb/images/icons/grin.gif) I was confused about the whole thing that I changed my name to Neo_Cubist (which I think means, everything is square).

+ The back pains felt like burning riding up and down my entire back (this is after the surgury) and for the next month. I then used the name Spinal_Fire (which I put it as, my back is on fire)

+ After the pain stopped and everything was technacly fine (I might have to get the other half of my back done) I named myself to Spinal_Job (Spinal for my spine and Job for my sugury). I have been using this name alot and theres only one Spinal_Job on the net, me.
