View Full Version : 3D Realms invaded
http://files.vsunion.org/MadManGT1/tip_rubin_and_joe_meddle.jpg
Well today was simply the weirdest, most surreal, and coolest Tuesday of my entire life.
It started out normal, the regular school crap, but then I drove out to Garland went to the mall and met up with Inanimate Carbon Rod.
It took me a minute to find him but when I did I just set down my sombrero on the seat next to his and we both grinned. images/icons/grin.gif
The next hour is where the real fun began, we drove around and found the 3drealms office building and just walked right on in. We went up to their floor went to their suite number and knocked on the door, Weider immediately opened the door and said "What do you want?"
I was in enough shock that Inanimate had to do the talking. images/icons/smile.gif
"We're here to see Joe Siegler."
"Okay, come on in....
Hey Joe these guys are here to see you."
(Joe getting fragged on Quake 3)
"Hey Joe, I'm Tip."
"And I'm Inanimate."
"Huh?"
"We're from the forums"
"What!?"
The look on Joe's face was priceless. images/icons/cool.gif
The very next thing he said was, "No you can't see it."
Well I didn't see THAT coming. images/icons/tongue.gif
We nearly got a peek at Max Payne 2 but Joe was too quick for us. graemlins/tinyted.gif
He hunted around for the other staff members but they were in a meeting so he showed us the mappers area, mainly the ceiling, lots and lots of half naked women pasted on the ceiling. images/icons/smile.gif
Then we got to meet George Broussard, who was also VERY shocked to see that we actually showed up (despite our warnings) and he was very cool to talk to.
Inanimate and I talked to him about everything from DNF to Max Payne 2 to NOLF 2 and even some Half Life 2.... hmmm lots of 2s.
He also gave us a tour around the office. I almost convinced him to make me and Inanimate into NPCs for DNF. So close... so very close.
Anyways, awesome awesome day, I got to meet most of the 3dr guys and I got to see and hear things I probably shouldn't have with Inanimate and his camera as my witness. images/icons/grin.gif
Don't bother asking us for info about DNF, the tidbits we found out about are not going to be divulged to anyone.

Tip, go answer your email. I tried sending email to the account you have associated with the UBB here, and it bounced. Said it's full.
Also, you posted the same pic twice in your list above. Did you just post it twice, or did you forget about something?

It was funnier the way that I said it, and it was more clear the way I originally said it but Inanimate thought I was saying too much or something so I changed it.
As for the pic being posted twice, that was a slip. images/icons/grin.gif

Tip, you my friend are the luckiest guy I have heard of. I would rather have been you today than have Britney Spears, Carmen Electra and that hot blonde girl from lizzie mcguire show up at my door nekkid and ask if they could use my bathtub(with me).
I would LOVE to live near 3dr. I live near Philadelphia PA and it looks like I will never meet Joe and George (they are my idols).
I would rather take a peep in the dressing room of the overweight middle-aged 3d realms employees (if DNF was running inside) than the dressing room of Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen.

pretty darn good use of photoshop, guys. you ALMOST had me... but tip seems to always be in the foreground, not touching anything. the use of shadows was very well done, but I noticed a few spots where it seems to be not quite right. You must have some very bright lights projected to get shadows like that....
also, why isn't Tip in on the "arms-over-shoulders and growling"? if those two were making faces for a picture, I'd probably be standing next to them (not in front) and making a face of my own (even if they didn't want me touching them in their arms-over-shoulders growling hug.) it looks like he just doesn't belong with the two people behind him, like he's posing in front of a cardboard cutout, or is a cardboard cutout being posed around the office. (now that I think of it, its more the latter, since he's too expressionless.. if i were at 3dr headquarters, I probably wouldn't be able to sit still for a picture, let alone pose so... emotionless, deadpan.)
now, I suppose its possible you really did go there, and I'm just imagining anomalies in the pictures.... but I'm paranoid by nature, and it just seems a bit off. my immediate response to seeing the image and hearing the story was one of disbelief... plus, I know Joe likes messing with our heads every now and then (pretty little flowers and music, anyone?)

Man you did it all wrong. If it were me I would have made a bigger joke out of it.
First of all you walk in with an empty pizza box with some old broken hard drive in it. You open it and ask for DNF. After you let them know you are kidding and go about your business taking pictures etc. you post them here like you did, only you tell the forum people you got to play DNF. images/icons/tongue.gif
-----------
BTW, how long were you there before they made you leave?
Also Joe, you guys need to get one of those steel doors you lock, and just open a little slide panel to look out and ask who is there. If these people have done it, who knows what other people might show up. Some might decide to be a little more persistant about seeing DNF. A
Although I don't see what the harm would have been to let them see it as long as they checked their camera at the door. You could always deny everything and make them out as crazies. It is cool that you guys let them in and hang out instead of turning them away, or just talking to them at the door for a few minutes and then asking them to leave.
Tip looks like he fits in when I look at those pics. If he knows how to do anything maybe he has a better chance of getting hired since he has met them and everything. I think thats how Weider got his job.

BobTheDog,
There are too many big-time nerds in our neighborhood to choose from, and all of 'em are hardware. images/icons/frown.gif But you should check out nVidia's new building, only a year or so old, it is located on San Tomas at Walsh ave. - or see Apple's old HQ bldg on Saratoga-Sunnyvale, if it's still there, totally butt-ugly bldg imho. Looks like a giant Apple II inspired monstrosity of architecture. Then there's IBM's silicon valley HQ, near my home on Cottle Rd. across from the OSH near 85 (oh and theres a stuft pizza there too). National Semi, on Central ex near Scott, nothing to write home about. Creative Labs on first St. south of Montague, non-exciting. Intel somewhere up here in Sunnyvale, I think it's near the ill-fated ESL complex. Or the old HP HQ on El Camino right off of Lawrence, looks like a "Mannix" set. Unfortunately none of those clowns are really worth visiting.

Man, I would never have the guts to do that. If I tried I would probably only get as far as the side of the street outside the building, and end up pacing around and giggling until someone walked out of the building, at which point I would run away. With that being said, you two are now official the coolest guys on the forums, with the possible exception of Joe3DR, because he goes there everyday.

Tip and Inanimate should have gotten away with some official 3DR hats or something images/icons/tongue.gif <font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Who told you about those!? JOE! Ready the crop dusters, destination... BADGER!

Some game companies don't even have forums, 3DRealms lets the forum members into their building. Talk about keeping in touch with the fans.

Its cool to see how nice they were to those two, but if another group ends up showing up I am sure that the next thing we know we would be told that they don't want use dropping by.
BTW I was wondering about a few things:
Why is it that only a few 3DR employees are visible in the pictures? Did they all freak out and hide because they don't like having their picture taken?
Or did they just think it was too weird having people like them showing up, so they just stayed in their office and closed the door?
Also, it seems like you guys let them just walk around and hang out for a while, so do you guys all work on DNF with your offices locked or something? There didn't seem to be much worry over them seeing something they shouldn't have.

*laughs* There really isn't much to see. I'm dead serious about that. Sure, there's a game room with a satellite, PS2, Xbox, etc...
Sure there's a kitchen with loads of snacks and drinks
Sure there are the walls of fame and shame...
Other than that, it's just computers and Joe's game collection.
Oh, and Lee's anime collection...
If you want to gawk at powered down computers, go right ahead. You think 3DR would let anyone in on any projects? Hey, even I don't know very much. The little I do know I've picked up walking down the halls, or hearing the guys talk about it a little in the game room on break. Even though all I know is extremely basic and standard to almost any game design, I still won't give it out. Even if I did, you'd be extremely disappointed. In essence, all any of us REALLY know is this.
1. It's being worked on
2. There's music
3. There's Duke
4. There are levels
5. There are guns
6. The guns have sounds
That's all we know for sure, and all we will know until 3DR sees fit to release further info.
In other words, I'm defending Tip and ICR. Leave 'em alone, they know less than I do, which is VERY little. With that, I say "enough"
Have a nice day images/icons/smile.gif

"Wow, at a game running time of 26 hours, going smoothly at a lowly 800mhz machine, on a buggy beta, doing an internet play test, it's cool that the crotch grab/scratch command still works without a slow down in the RPG transformation where it turns into a giant laser, ala ID4."

actually now that i think of it 3DR are really nice to let the guys actually come in in one piece. i've always known what risks you could be taking if even getting NEAR the offices but i guess its just one method to scare all those DNF starving geeks. its good that Joe actually took them around the place like a tour and allowed them to take photos (and they all have smiles! SMILES!) i thought they would have seriously been pissed but i guess it would have been good to get some true fans to drop in for a rare viewing. although it would be nice to drop in, but i think those t1000s would peel my eyelids over my ass and bowl me out into the street. images/icons/frown.gif
