I don't know why but I can't edit some of my posts such as the thread I have at duke nukem modifications section. I'm unable to edit my first post and some of my other posts. Why can't I do that? :(

How old are the posts you are trying to edit? There's a time limit.

7-09-08 Is the date of the post
Yes it's because it's past the cut off time for editing posts. Which I believe is 24 hours.

No, it's very good. It's designed to keep troublemakers from changing the past. History has proven that more trouble comes when you allow unlimited editing.

Well I was in need of that because I thought it would be easier to edit the first page where I had to link for my mod for recent updates :P At least I thought it would be easier for other people to get it.

You could ask a mod to edit it for you with the new information but I'm not sure exactly on how they feel about doing that :)

They don't like that sort of stuff, that's for sure. I am not sure what is meant to prevent with this? Since you leave a mark everytime you edit something.
I visit a lot bigger forum daily, and you can edit your post as long as the thread isn't locked. It works fine there, though their forum software doesn't even leave a mark when you edit - which is bad.

well, i recently came across some spelling errors i made in 2006 on these forums (this thread: http://forums.3drealms.com/vb/showthread.php?t=23312 )
i would have liked to correct them so i don't look like a complete dumb ass, but i cant.
i tend to make a lot of spelling errors, as i if a learning disablement which inhibits my ability to spell correctly. (i haven't gotten anything wrong in this post due to spell check in Firefox.

If I remember correctly, the worst of the "edit post" abuse was from ppl being able to delete posts outright (which was allowed briefly in the 1999-2001 timeframe when UBB added that as a feature) because this allowed users to troll other users to the point of major outbursts of flaming, and then remove their trolls without a trace to make it look entirely like the other user's fault. In extreme cases, certain troublemakers would start a troll thread, piss off half the ppl on the board, and then delete the entire thread before Joe saw it by deleting the first post.
Of course this doesn't work if an Archivist (http://redwing.hutman.net/~mreed/warriorshtm/archivist.htm) saves copies of such threads and emails them to the proper authorities... :D

Ah yeah Scotty I remember those days. More than a few times I remember conversaions turning ugly and then someone "bailed" out with the edit trick...

You know, I just thought of something. When vBulletin 3.7 was put out, there was a feature that could be useful here.
http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1450775&postcount=13
We have Wikipedia style histories of posts and their editing, so staff could see what was edited out. Let me think about it a bit. It would on the surface appear to remove the need to keep people from editing their posts.
I'd still leave the edit limit on as it would then require mods to monitor all edits manually.

You honestly think that majority of users here would abuse the feature? For me, that sounds a cool feature. Since you could update the first post, e.g. if the thread is about a game, with up to date info. So no need to check through tens and tens of unneeded messages to see "what's new".
I doubt there is real interest for people here to distract admins, and you can always report posts.

There were enough that abused it before that caused the limit we have now.
Yes. Yes I most certainly do believe it would get abused. The question is how much. "majority"? Probably not, but as online forums have proved, you don't have to be a majority to ruin something.

Wouldn't such feature limit it greatly? The above mentioned feature, edit history. That would seriously lessen that stuff. I highly doubt it would ruin this forum, as I see it, it would make this forum more clean, as people could correct thread titles, first posts and so on.

I didn't say "ruin", either.

I just think this should be given another thought, since I can't really see how it would make anything for the worse. As I said, it would improve on what we have now.

Well, you twice put words in my mouth that I didn't say. Both of which would severely change the direction of the conversation. I never like that.

Well, english isn't my native language, that was not my intention. For me, only the "ruin" part might be taken as putting words in your mouth, and I apologize, it wasn't my intention. In lack of a better word I used ruin, but I didn't realize that would imply you saying that.

It's been awhile since I tried it, but I don't think it's possible for a user to edit a thread's title after the thread has been posted, though it used to be possible.
Back in the old days before General Messages had a moderation queue, someone could post a thread, get ppl to reply to it, and then go back and rename the thread's title to "Post here if you suck!" or something similar.

Well, that would be just childish. I think the general messages is a lot cleaner nowdays.

The kind of stuff you refer to there is the kind of crap that actually got Gen Msgs removed for a time.

I remember 8 years ago when someone posted a really bad (and ban-worthy) MS Paint sketch of Joe.
The offender not only edited the post, but also removed the pic from the site it was hosted on.
However, I had already saved a copy of it. :D
