Wow. I must be behind the times because when the movie was originally announced like a Gazillion Years Ago I was Following it for a number of them.

Anyway, Early 2009-ish the Live Action Dragonball Movie is Supposed to be In Theatres for U.S. and Japan. Who knew!

Anyway, Yamcha, Goku, and Piccolo are the only characters I know of who are familiar and James Marsters (Spike on Buffy/Angel) is playing Piccolo! Wow! There's also Mai, Bulma, Muten Roshi, etc.

Found this Movie Poster

I remember reading about this 6 years ago.
Seems interesting for Dragonball fans, I'm not too excited though.

The posters are definitely fake. The first one even has 08/15/08 as a release date, after it was officially announced that the movie wouldn't be released in 2008 because the special effects need more time.

Yeah, I figured that, but it has the dude who plays Son Goku so yeah. Just thought I'd put it out there.

Yeah, I was like o_O when I heard.

I still put on my Lollerskates when I look at the pics and such. Except for James Marsters I have no idea who anybody is and he's hardcore enough that even though I don't want this to ruin Dragonball for me I'll still see it. :D But who knows could be decent. Better than the Live Action DB movie where Muten Roshi is called Turtle Man.

It was Dragonball: The Magic Begins f**king awful. lol.

I'm a big Dragonball fan, well more DBZ actually, the original DB story would be best summed up as an intro. But I guess they wanna do the trilogy thing. But you'd need way more than 3 to do it right. They ought to have just gotten into the DBZ storyline and end the first movie right after Frieza.

In any case I believe the live action version will be terrible... As most conversions are. But I have been following it since it was barely a myth so i guess I'll have to check it out

Actually, Akira Toriyama wanted the "Frieza Sage" to be the end of Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z. The Z means zen, attainment of awakening, and points at Goku achieving it by becoming the legendary super saiyan.

Sagas and movies were added because the fans demanded more.

I don't think an anime can be translated to live action, specially not a well know one and over the top characters. And I doubt they can do the anime emotions, actions and what not.

That would have been great. The Frieza saga was definitely the best. Maybe they could re-write it so it happens last :D

Seriously though, everyone in the universe was supposed to be terrified of him... Oh but not these guys you never heard of. Although I liked the Android/ Cell saga as well. It wasn't quite as good.

I don't really care about Dragonball one way or the other. I it occasionally and thought the action imagery was really cool and inspiring, but other than that it didn't really have much to keep me interested. But I'll certainly want to see this if it looks like they've done a good job on it (but how many films based on shows actually turn out good?)

And I agree with Steve though. A film adaptation of DBZ probably would be better.

I'm just here to see how bad this movie will tank upon release. I'm hoping it really blows, then they may not make the Cowboy Bebop live action movie with Keanu Reeves:mryuck:
Cowboy Bebop is awesome, Keanu as Spike... is not.

lol Yeah.

I think a DBZ movie would have been better from The Beginning of DBZ to The End of the Saiyan Saga would have been choice for me. Then the next movie do the Frieza Saga and end it, but who knows maybe they'll do those two after DB movie.

Yeah, I think this movie will be Epic Fail, but the DB fan in me is still interested. :D At least James Marsters is in it.

I was just surprised it was being made at all. :D

Personally I'm a big DBZ fan, so I hope they don't stop at Dragonball and continue to do the entire DBZ storyline as well (in chapters perhaps?). Even if it sucks, it'll be worth watching :)

Seems like some of the actors asked if their costumes could be changed to look more like the characters, specifically the guy who plays goku asked as well as someone else, I think the guy who plays spike in Buffy, so, Piccalo?

Yeah, James Marsters is Piccolo. I think it'll be Piccolo Damiyo but not sure. That's cool that they asked to make their costumes more like the original though that's one good thing at least.

I watched it in English and Italian some years ago. Believe it or not, the Italian version is the best of the lot, since it has the original names and the voice acting is definitely superior to that of the English version.

The final fighting scene of the Matrix trilogy already was pretty much dragonball. I agree on the anime emotions, though. That won't be translated to movie or will look very wrong.

The good thing for me is that I'm not a dragonball fan. So as long as they don't pull off another Super Mario brothers movie they can't really ruin anything for me :D

I'm reminded a bit too much of the disapointment I got when I saw Blanka in the live-action Street Fighter movie.

Still, I loved the MK film so this might still be fun enough to be worth the watch.

Anyone else think the attacks looked WAY underpowered (particularly the multiple ground explosion... whatever that was supposed to be) ?

The main reason this movie is going to suck as that they are taking the whole dragon ball story way too serious. Take for instance the names, all the saiyans are named after vegetables and they come from a planet named after the word vegetable. Or what about Buu's master called Babidi and Babidi's father, called Bibidi, created buu. So Bibidi created Babidi's Buu. And I think I don't even have to start about the underwear names.
Even the creator of Dragonball, Akira Toriyama, didn't take it serious, he even made a manga called Neko Majin Z (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neko_Majin) to show how silly Dragonball actually was.

And these guys are removing all the silly things (I doubt master Roshi is going to get smakced in the face for fondling some girl's boobs) and replacing it with serious theme.
That's like removing the comedy aspect of Police Academy and just leaving a serious story line. (I'm not debating if Police Academy is funny or not, I'm using it to make a point.)

Agreed. Maybe someone will do us a favor, cancel this crap and release an animated movie in theaters. Hell, just string the episodes together and make it like that, it would still be cool to see in a theater and I think any fan will agree, better than this live action atrocity

I don't mind the whole "it's too serious" aspect. Just give me physically impossible fights, cool powers and a lot of shit blowing up during the whole movie, and I'll consider it a good Dragonball movie.
Besides, Dragonball Z was a lot less comedic than the original Dragonball, and that's the series Dagonball fans like the most.

The Stinger
10-17-2008, 05:50 PM
^Let's see, the whole king Kai part in the saiyan saga was comedic, gohan's training, every chichi moment, master roshi moment, every Hercule moment, every fat buu moment, every goten and trunks moment, Goku and Piccolo driving lessons, etc.
I could post a lot more but I haven't watched it in ages. But Dragonball also had a lot of serious moments.

It's not the lack of comedy.
Goku is not going to be Goku. He's a innocent, friendly goof, who can fight when needed to. He's all super serious in the trailer. He will not exhibit the same characteristics of the beloved fighter. That is my main gripe.
Piccolo has an S&M thing going on. I'm fine with the facial redesign, but the suit is just stupid for him.
And Roshi, telling him he's the chosen one. Bullcrap on a stick. No beard, no sunglasses, no turtle shell, no out of control libido. They've taken the fun away from the character.

I'm still going to watch it, but as a Dragonball fan, I hate the changes they've made.

OH MY GOD!
That trailer was so bad that I don't know where to start.
Goku "I'm not ready for this?" Isn't he supposed to be the one who wants
to fight, always looking for a better opponent.

The whole story with Piccolo is just butchered, he was actually sent into space by his father because the whole Namakian race was in danger of being wiped out by violent storms on Namek. He later becomes Kami. All the evil in Kami(Piccolo) is released and it forms into Piccolo Daimo(the one who everyone calls Piccolo). Piccolo Daimo starts to destroy the earth, they seal him in a Denshi Jar. Kami creates the Dragonballs.

Since when are there shapshifters in the DB(Z/GT) universe? Roshi not a dirty old man? where's Goku's tail? And WHY do they need to wield guns?!?!

They also changed the origin of the Dragon Balls themselves. Created by seven mystics.... screw that.
I also agree with Orochi on how they seemed to have changed Goku's personality. Without the childish innocence... it just seems odd.

And I understand that they felt the need to have Goku's age be older, but it DragonBall he was a child. With the movie showing him at late teens, early adult... it shoudl've been DBZ... IMO.

But, as with Orochi... I will still probably go see it. :p

Not having watched the cartoon (well, I've seen the occasional episode) I may enjoy this just for the brainless action- and fight-sequences. But really, from the looks of the trailer I think no one would care about this film if the name Dragonball wasn't attached.

Looks like an "Action-Film of the Week" during your typical summer-movie period.
