View Full Version : Max Payne minimum requirements - how much 3DMarks do you get

Guys,
When shipping Max, we wanted to play it safe and ended up setting the minimum requirements to 900 3DMarks. I'd be curious to hear some feedback on how correct this was? We've seen some reports from people saying that they get 3DMark scores below 700 and find the game still perfectly playable.
Did we get the minimum score right? Is it too high? Is it too low?

I got 950 Marks at 640x480x16, something like ~700 at default. I think you hit it right on the mark, I can run MP fine at all details lowest 640x480x16 images/icons/smile.gif
My Specs:
p3 450
192MB RAM
32MB Rage 128

Umm, if you're running an NVidia card, 3DMark is a good benchmarking program.. If you're running 3dfx, forget it.. My marks were very low, (around 1500 on a V5 5500) and it's all bs.. I'm running at max detail on all settings and it is fluid and pleasing to the eye.. I could give you my fps if anyone would respond to my question on how to do it in another thread, but it can't be low.. there is no choppiness or slow down whatsoever.. (barring the intentional bullet dodge)
So quite frankly, I don't trust this program to give me a reliable assessment of my card..According to this, I can barely play these games, and I'm playing the crap out of them..
(Quake3 mod Urban Terror at high detail hovers @ 100 fps at 1024 x 768, no meager accomplishment for this mod)
The problem is that 3dfx doesn't support T&L, rather than adjusting your scores, it apparently gives you zero for those marks..

I get 989 3D Marks with my Voodoo 3 and celeron, Max Payne is very playable (minus outdoors and uuber detailed areas) at 640x480@16 with everything at Medium to Max detail. When I tried a GeForce 2 64MB DRR Pro (Long name images/icons/smile.gif ) in my machine, I was getting 1700 3D Marks, and Max Payne was very very playable at 1024x768@16 at full details, got a bit sluggish during big gunfights, but for the most part it was never slower than my Voodoo's fastest. images/icons/smile.gif

Well my machine is not really set up for gaming, Celeron 633, 128MB, ATI 128 Vivo, 3Dmark2001 score= 780, but max payne is still perfectly playable on a mix of min and medium settings.

My 3D Marks score: 540 or so. You can go here: http://members.home.net/hqh51/HTML/rltmdrivers.htm for a more detailed benchmark of my laptop with various drivers. They earn from 530s to 540s.
My system specs:
- Intel Pentium III 500 MHz w/256 KB L2 cache (Cu series)
- 128 MB of PC-100 SDRAM
- ATI Rage Mobility M1 8 MB RAM 2X AGP
My comments: It runs okay, for the some part. I do however, don't run things on "Low" setttings for all the time. There are a few things I crank up to high and medium.
Of course, if I ran everything on "Low" settings, I'd believe it would've ran a little bit faster, but I'd doubt it'll improve by much.
Then there were some parts that slowed down the crap out of my laptop. Especially the last level - Aesir Corporation. Talk about slow down heaven.
In the readme file that was included with Max Payne, it did say that Rage Pro video cards cannot play Max Payne. Well, it can. But there are a few problems with it. Especially with the "black out" textures problem. This has to do with video drivers, but I'm working with the best with custom drivers.
I did put up a site detailing how I ran the game here: http://members.home.net/hqh51/HTML/ragegaming.htm#Max%20Payne
That link included about the black out fixes to the farthest as it can, but it'll still happen, but a lot less. I don't know if Remedy wanted to include and update about the Rage Pro thing... Rage Mobility & Rage Pro are basically the same video chipset. The only difference between them are for laptop & desktop respectively.
The thing that bothered me is, it seemed like the min specs were a bit of a contradiction. I have a 533mhz Celeron, 128 megs ram and a TNT2Ultra w/ 32megs. Now, technically this exceeds the minimum hardware described, however, it only scores about 588 3dMarks. So I wasn't sure if the game would run well or not.
I took a chance and bought it anyway. Most of the time, I get a frame rate between 20-25 FPS, which is not bad. However, some of the areas drop down to 10 fps; for example the fight with Vinnie Gognitti, and the rooftop chase just before that. Max Payne has a lower frame rate than any other game that I've played. Setting all details to low didn't seem to help the frame rate at all, so I play with textures set to high and other details at mid or low.
I think the minimum specs should've been stated as a Pentium 3 500 Mhz, because it seems like there is a big difference between having a Celeron 500 and a P3 500, for this game. When I
bought my PC, the general consensus seemed to be that there "wasn't much difference" between having a P3 or a Celeron, as far as games went. With Max Payne, this is clearly not the case.
This isn't to say I wasn't happy with the game, I enjoyed it very much and it's one of my favorites. But I would've liked to see a better frame rate, and minimum specs that weren't so confusing.

Hoe do you find out the 3D Marks? images/icons/confused.gif

I tried it on my older PC...
And got dammed IT WORKED!
Don't know the 3dmarks score, but IT'S WAY UNDER THE MINIMUM SPECS.
PII 266 Mhz
256 Mb 66 Mhz ram
16 Mb Vodoo Banshee AGP video card
Not the best graphics at 640x480 and a low framerate +/- 15 Fps in hallways, and around 5-10 Fps at open areas and big gunfights.
I'm just glad with my newer PC

A friend of mine gets ~490 on a Celeron 375 and TNT2, and Max is playable to a certain degree. Somewhat slow (~5-10FPS) in big areas, but flows nicely in most parts of the game.
When overclocking to 450MHz he got ~600, and Max plays fine...
