View Full Version : it's been three weeks and I still haven't been able to play Max Payne

Ok, that's a lie..I've been able to play Max Payne for no longer than 5 minutes if I'm lucky. I fire the beretta, it kicks me back to the desktop, I take a few steps forward I get kicked back to the desktop. It's a vicious cycle. And this is when the map manages to load! Other times I'd think I'd be in the clear, then the map loading screen kicks me back to the desktop, corrupting my display, where if I try to restart the PC through windows, I got a BSoD followed by a black screen with blue lines at the top, forcing me to press the reset button. I've tried the game with and without the patch, updated videocard drivers (6.50's, 12.41's, 12.90's, even the 14.10's) d/l'ed Live! Ware 3.0, got the updated drivers from Creative for my SB Live! Value (dated 05-05-01, the last update), updated my VIA chipset drivers. I even changed my video card! (from a Creative Geforce 256 DDR to an ASUS V7100 GeForce 2 MX)and it still doesn't work! I switched my soundcard to the lowest PCI slot (read somewhere that this might fix the problem), tweaked all my hardware, turned off AGP texturing, changed the AGP Apeture size, turned off sound acceration, disabled my soundcard, tried all of the 'solutions' posted on the net for Max tech. problems and I still can't enjoy Max Payne. The only place I can play Max Payne is at my friend's place (I don't wanna be there 24/7 just to play the game, that's just being rude). I'm not a happy camper to say the least...three weeks and I can't even get the game to run on my PC....Someone tell me how to fix my problem! Please!

Oh and BTW, Remedy, if you really want to reproduce my problem, go get yourself a rig with the following specs:

PIII 800mhz
128mb SDRAM (133mhz)
ASUS V7100 GeForce 2 MX/Creative GeForce 256 DDR
SB Live! Value
Windows 98SE
Gigabyte GA-6VXE7+ Motherboard
LG 8x/4x/32x CD-RW drive
Pioneer 16x DVD-ROM

none of these components are overclocked either..
So if you'd like to try and help me out, that'd be pretty nice..
Thanks,

Open the case, remove the sb live then feel the payne! If that works buy a cheap $10 sound card or use onboard if you have one!

I don't think it's as drastic a measure as removing your sound card. However, the problem is indeed that you have that sound card. People with the same one have the same problems.
Try turning off Hardware acceleration on your card. Also, I think Live! Ware may have something to do with it.

Tried that too, and that didn't work either. Acceleration on and off, unplugged the card..i've yet to try my old SB AWE 32 card, but i really shouldn't have to resort to that should i?

Any other ideas?

i have a Live! card taht works just fine. just remember to update the drivers... that should work maybe.

also, look for irq conflicts with your computer.

- Maybe you should try different memory modules! Try your friend's memory, for example...

- You should install via for-in-one drivers before installing other drivers. You should do that qucikly after you've installed the w98.

And a general advice for everyone: NEVER buy a Via chipset mainboards..
%90 of the people who are having problems with max is using via/amd systems..

Kay, this is a shot in the dark.. But I had a similar prob with the Q3 mod Urban Terror.. I was running 128MB Ram also, and had noticed with a memory manager that when it did the crash to DT, I was out of RAM.. After a healty 256MB upgrade, (turning off ECC in the mobo settings didn't hurt either) this problem all but stopped... The latest patch did away with the prob altogether, but that's a different matter..

As I said, shooting in the dark, but 128MB RAM isn't what it was a year ago with some of the latest releases.. I know it meets the reccomended dose for MP, so this could be way off..

p.s., Running a via chipset mobo with an AMD TBird 1000 and MP plays flawlessly at high detail with my V5 5500.. Imagine my elation after running a celery 433 for a couple of years images/icons/grin.gif

[ 08-24-2001: Message edited by: dede ]

My first P III mainboard had an Intel 820 chipset. I bought it because I believed the FUD about VIA mainboards, but didn't want to buy an outdated Intel 440 BX board. It was unstable as hell, due to the MTH reboot issue, and it was slow as hell, because that chipset was optimized for RDRAM (this particular board was an SDRAM-only board)

I ended up getting an ASUS P3V4X (Via Apollo Pro 133A chipset) Although I had some stability issues before figuring out the right AGP settings to use and the right way to install the 4-in-1 drivers (I reinstall the VIA AGP driver after updating the nVidia drivers, since the nVidia drivers are distributed with the Intel vGART driver file), I've never had the spontaneous reboots I had with my old mainboard, and it's a hell of a lot faster. images/icons/smile.gif images/icons/grin.gif

Previously, my video card and my soundcard shared the same IRQ, I thought that this may be a problem, so I switched the soundcard to a different PCI slot so it would have a different IRQ, but that didn't seem to fix the problem either

Ok, first up how do other games play?

Go to your BIOS and try setting your AGP Driving to manual and then set it to EA.

Right click on My computer. Click on the Device Manager tab. Open System Devices & go to PCI Bus. Right click on it & select Properties. Go into the Settings tab & set the Device Enumeration to Use Hardware NOT Use BIOS, that is if it is indeed set to use your BIOS.

Get DX8.0a.

Other games run fine on my pc. Although for some reason, I can't even run 3dmark2000/2001 fully, as they also kick me back to the desktop ala Max Payne, which is weird.

My BIOS doesn't have an AGP Driving option (it's an AWARD BIOS, can't remember which version though. How do I go about changing the AGP Driver?

*bump*

There's got to be a patch in the works...otherwise, it looks like i don't get to feel the Payne, like many others who are experiencing the same problems I am...

BTW, i've got updated drivers for everything too...VIA 4 in 1, running the nvidia 14.40's, liveware 3.0!, DX 8.0a, no IRQ conflicts, no errors, 384mb SDRAM, everything's practically updated. I've tried all the 'solutions' on the net, and I still can't play the game...

talk about frustrating!

Ok, if you cant select AGP driveing, you should update your BIOS then, however, get a pro to do it or you could kill your MOBO.

Sorry for my late reply.

Hmmm I had the simular problems under Windows Me
on a
Amd 1000mhz AZ11e m/b
Ge force V6600 divers 3.75
Directx 8
Sm Live
384 Mb Ram
The rest is uninportant,
And beleive me I tryed everything to get this game working (I spent about a week to get it going under Me trying different things and drivers, even tried it with M/board and V/card only, removing all other hardware, etc, etc).
(Always went back to desk top)

So I went and got Windows 2000 pro. D/loaded new video card, sound card drivers, Directx Software for windows 2000. Reinstalled Mp and played it to the bitter end images/icons/smile.gif .
(Ps no patch was installed)

So I have no idea what the problem was under winME, but it sure suxs when you have to go to a different o/s to play a game. So all this bs about its this or that is not true, when I have the same hardware And the drivers for that hardware to match my o/s.
So in my opinion is must be a combination of Hardware drivers or O/systems that give the trouble. (So at the snd of the day all I have changed is O/s and hardware drivers).
I also play others games like Kp, Cs, Unreal, Q3, Ssam, SoF, Nascar 4 and have never had any problems with these games.
