View Full Version : Duke Nukem 3D Walkthrough

Something I've wanted to do for ages now I'm finally getting around to doing. It's a walkthrough for Duke Nukem 3D. We have a few of these on our website (Shadow Warrior (http://www.3drealms.com/sw/walkthroughs.html), Max Payne 1 (http://www.3drealms.com/max/walkthrough/p1c1.html), and an aborted attempt at Max Payne 2 (http://www.3drealms.com/max2/walkthrough/p1pro.html)). But never one for Duke3D.
The primary reason is grabbing the screenshots was a pita on the old DOS version. DOSBox was an option, but I never really looked into that for some reason or another. Now that we finished the Duke3D port for the 360, I thought about using that version to grab screenshots, mostly because the development kit tools make it braindead easy to get screenshots. The game is the same as the original, so all the art and level design is the same, so I set out to finally make an official walkthrough for the game.
Take a look, and tell me what you think of it. As the walkthrough is 100% my work, I have to admit to being curious to see what people think of it.
http://www.3drealms.com/duke3d/walkthrough/index.html
I'm not ready to post it as news on the front page of the 3DR site, so I would prefer folks not spread this to other sites until I have completed the work. Thanks.

Very cool Joe! It looks awesome. Even though I finished the game millions of times, I still enjoyed reading it. Oh and, there's a typo at Death Row's 4th Secret. ("cell")

That's not really the point here - its supposed to be a walkthrough, not a "tell all" about the game, and not really a behind the scenes thing, either.

Isn't the general purpose of walkthroughs are to help people pass where they got stuck? That's a bit unnecessary for him to ask it anyway :)

One thing: on secret #2 in Death Row, don't you have to hit "use" on the altar to open up the wall?

A very minor thing really, but in Death Row - Secret #2, where you've written "First you need to shoot out the stained glass window on the left. Once you've done that, it will turn the room red...", in the PC version at least (not sure about other versions though), pressing "use" on the altar instead turns the room red.
Apart from that, this is a great walkthrough so far. :)

Some of those levels were real pain to get all the secrets. Especially if you did not have a jetpack. Yes, I'm looking at you Lunar Reactor!
Dark Side was rough too, as there was one I thought I needed a jetpack for (turns out I didn't). I had to go back TWO levels to get a jetpack, and play my way back again. That really sucked. :( (The one I'm talking about was the one where you jump off the train)

Your getting into the areas where I need help. :)
As an added bonus, are you going to add in all the "random texts" that are around the place?
Like "Bite me" found above one of the toilets in Lunar reactor or "You should not be here yet!" found at the very end of Raw meat (which needs DNclip for) and the many others....

No, I am not. There are way too many of those, and this project is taking long enough as it is. The odd thing like that is in there, but I'm not planning on covering every single thing, nor how to get every object and item in the game.
It's a walkthrough. I tell you how to finish the level, how to get all the secrets. That's what they're for. :)
Edit: There's no DNCLIP in here anyway, so you couldn't get to the one you're talking about anyway.

I just got done with Tier Drops. What a pain in the ass that was. There's no obvious "path" through the level, so I had to spend time figuring out what the level designer was trying to do. I couldn't figure it out, so I had to actually call Levelord on the phone. Fortunately he remembered.
Short of it is it was supposed to be a DM only map that got plopped into single player as a secret level, so there is no obvious way through the level except the 10 second path.
As for "not much left", my goal when I started this was to have it finished before Arcade comes out which is next Wednesday. That means I have to be done with it by close of business on Tuesday. We'll see if I can still make it. :)

The main reason I never did one is it is a pain to get all the screenshots. With the old game, I'd be saving all over the place. The replay system has been in use QUITE a lot during my work on this project.
The devkit 360 in my office lets me take screenshots from my main computer, and keeps 'em there.

It's worse in co-op, as when you die, you have to go all the way back to the start of the level. In single player on the 360, you can at least use the replay system.

Where you gotta go through the room where the ceiling collapses, then fight in a small room, go through a grate you goota bust, fall into the water filled with octobrains, find the switch to open the door to get out before the 2 walls squish you.

This? It's Critical Mass.
That level caused us some problems in development. Playing in co-op was a problem, because if someone went up the stairwell at the start, it would collapse, and then if you died, you went back to the beginning. Since the stairwell was down, you were stuck, you couldn't go anywhere.
In Dukematch, this level has a teleport there to avoid the problem, but co-op did not. This was the only level that we went back into the game data and changed it - specifically for this scenario. Co-op has access to the teleporter in the first room to get around the collapsed stair problem.
Movie Set has a similar problem in Episode 3 with a collapsing stair blocking an exit to the end level, but there's another way out of that level, so it was left alone.

It's that I never see him, can never figure out how to get him , he just shoots rockets at me through the wall and I can't get to him. Thought maybe there was a room behind the wall or something. (talking about the wall behind the yellow key) Dunno if it's just a quirk when I play, but I hear him, the rockets come out the wall behind where the yellow key is, and I can never get him.

in the control room that has the chair with the access code on the arms, there is a room with pipebombs to the right/left depending on the way you entered, the teleport is opposite this room, enter the room and activate the jetpack, now fly on up to the secret room.

I think Joe is primarily looking for just the secrets that count when you finish the level. Which means all the secrets need to have the sector lo-tag 32767.
Mapster32 really helped in this case because all the secret room sector tags are clearly marked in 2d. there is also a find sector lotag feature (alt+F7) that is sorta buggy but worked for me.

I did a complete set of demos back in the day. Every episode, including all secrets, and I even killed the boss of the first episode without using rockets...

You know... I don't want this to come accross the wrong way, and very nice work joe, but (It may go un-noticed anyway) the screenshot of the queen giving birth has the queen's sprite going through the platform, minor error.
Also, i see on the "STATS" the text says alien moggots, which of course isn't an error, but does it mean that the XBLA version is censored like the N64 version?

Taking shots in certain places was stupid difficult, I had to fight the queen and take the screenshots from my computer. You try it and get the boss to line up perfectly for a shot. :)

It is NOT CENSORED. Period.
Count, I thought about ROTT, but that would require much research. I don't know the ins and outs of that. I was able to pull this off relatively quickly, because I had just spent the previous five months doing nothing BUT play Duke3D. If I had to do this for ROTT starting cold, it would take WAY longer. To make matters worse, there are a ton of more levels in ROTT than there were in Duke.

Just a little something I noticed. For the first secret of Hollywood Holocaust, you direct the player to jump to the ledge underneath the "Guilty?" sign, and right next to it is a screenshot of said ledge with the sign reading "Innocent?". It doesn't seem right, somehow.

Typo in the Overlord level walkthrough on Secret #3 (A Wall of Pimebombs).

Edit: I made a pass through the walkthrough myself as well as reading the messages here. I've corrected all the known problems. If you still see a problem with the walkthrough, please let me know.
Thanks.

Your walkthrough is awesome! Now, in Lunar Apocalypse, tell me how to end level 4. I can't get to that door fast enough before it closes to end level 4.

Not sure if someone pointed this out yet, but in Lunar Reactor Walkthrough you make this remark
" The one on the left turns the lights on (which would have been more helpful BEFORE the combat),"
The two rooms overlooking the reactor hall have the lightswitch in them.

hi guys , first post .
well 've been looking for a walkthrough for this game for years , so well done !
but - I'm playing it on the regular Playstation , and the 4th episode is different to the one you describe ... ?
anyway - will the rest of the walkthrough match ?
and - what am i supposed to do in Plug and Pray : Faces of Death once I've killed the big guy in the upper chamber , the game says something like 54% complete , but I can't find any way out .

PSX version has a different 4th episode that was exclusive to that version. "The Birth" episode is from the add-on for the PC version Atomic Edition/Plutonium Pack. so no, it won't help you on the PSX version; until someone makes a PSX walkthrough i guess :)

For plug and play it won't, but for the other three it will work.

btw - on the PS version there are secret places in the Faces of Death level - there are 2 lava waterfalls , use a jetpack to rise up above them and there they are .

I'm absolutely loving the walk through, its actually the reason I finally went ahead and bought Duke3D for my 360. Having played it on PC so many times since the late 90's, but never managing to correctly find my way round all the levels from being to rubbish and always resorting to using cheats - I've really been enjoying reliving the experience properly whilst doing some enjoyable sight seeing along the way all thanks to your awesome walk through :)
I do have a question though...
On level 1, there is (what I think to be) a secret area really high up above the ramp that leads to the end of the level. Its guarded by 2 gun turrets and has another Jet Pack and some chain gun ammo.
Why is this not mentioned in the walk through and isn't classed as a secret area? Did you guys forget about that when you made the game or is it an anomaly or just not 'secret' enough to be a secret or worth mentioning in the walk through?
Keep up the awesome work ;)
Jon.

*Fail* ... :(
I just read Joe's disclaimer:
"There are a few other areas (like the secret wall on top of the trashcan near the arcade in the lobby) that are not recognized by the game as secrets. This secrets area will only show the "true" secrets in the level."
Sorry for my stupid question :(
But I'm still intrigued... Is that area actually meant to be there? It just seems a little "oddly" placed... hehe

I used this in a couple of spots the other day when playing through The Birth. Pretty handy. :)

Cheers, using this to go through the Birth (not a fan of that episode to be honest, hence the "cheating")

I've noticed that some images in the walkthrough are links. For example, e4m11_09.jpg can be clicked and links to itself. This doesn't seem purposeful. Is that an error?

A Rise Of The Triad walkthrough would be difficult. I remember some of the levels having a lot of time-delay secrets. Also, from the Abyss walkthrough:

Mistake. I was in such a hurry to finish that I just missed the hyperlink.

why was my last post deleted?
i was trying to ask joe seigler a question if they were ever going to do some insane airport level for a duke nukem game where you have to go outside and go into a plane to get a keycard or stop some plane from crashing like as a die hard reference
sounds kind of cool right?
guess it's off topic by why not seems like a cool idea you could have the whole runway outside and a hude inside baggage claim and ticketing area and who knows some complex outside area on the runway going to different hangers or a radar tower to get keycards maybe even an inside baggae claim lol i just keep thinking die hard 2 references would be bad
i like how in duke 3d a lot of the next level would be based on the last level, who knows what level you would go to from the airport
you could have a teleporter or something somewhere that would take you to some other place sounds kind of nice right?
As the little text below his nickname suggest, Joe is "Former 3DR Staff". Means that he doesn't work there anymore. Means that you should ask your questions to someone who does.

thanks for that
I was actually just wanting to know if thought it was cool, being a former 3dr staff member
i don't think this level would fit into a duke 3d build engine map
however maybe i could build this on an urban terror map if I could figure out how
