View Full Version : Duke 3D on Vista 64-bit
Does anyone know how to install Duke on Vista 64-bit Home Premium. There's this error I get saying the program needs to be 64-bit compatible. I tried running it in compatibility mode for Windows 95, but that didn't help. Any suggestions? I have the CD and all the stuff I used to get it up and running on XP, but I recently made the switch to Vista, so I'll need to re-install it.
Maybe I can just copy the files off the CD, but not sure if that would work.

I believe 64-bit Windows does not have 16-bit app support, so I think you're stuck with either the source ports or DOSBox.

This man speaks the truth :)
Try xduke (http://vision.gel.ulaval.ca/~klein/duke3d/), Jeff. It works right away with Vista.
Do I need to install the VDM sound update and all that? Or just run the game with that link you gave me as is?

You don't need to install anything for xduke. Just download xduke here. (http://vision.gel.ulaval.ca/~klein/duke3d/Duke3d_Binary_Only_v19.7.1.zip) Unzip and run!
That "Build on XP" thing wont do you any good for Vista 64.
What about the sound settings in the setup menu? Those should probably work with that link. Although I haven't tested them on Vista yet. I remember you had to set up the sound a particular way in XP to get it to fuction properly, otherwise it would be all distorted and weird.

I don't understand? Just unzip the xduke port and run. No configuring anything. No nothing. Just run :)
Forget what you knew about getting it to run on XP with the build on XP link you posted. That method will not work on Vista 64 :)
Just out of curiosity, are Duke and Shadow Warrior basically free now? I know most software is paid for, but with 3D Realms releasing the source code, maybe it's free. However, they still sell it on their site, so I don't know. Maybe it's not free.

No, the game's data is not free, just the source is.

Still, I recommend xDuke if you want to play the game on it's original state, eDuke is cool for mods and other developements. And yep, the 'Build on XP' method was a pretty advanced way of making the original source (for DOS) work on the little bit of DOS that's left on the XP command prompt. I haven't tried this on my Vista 32 machine yet, but I suppose it won't do any good on 64 bit systems.
Thus you're probably good with either DOSBox (to run original exe) or xDuke (Windows source port that does nothing more than original).

Use EDuke32, but make sure you install OpenAL first.
