View Full Version : Save game directory?

Is there no way to get the game to put savegames in its own directory?

... short of hacking it...

I hate this notion of Microsofts, creating "my personal whatever" - I'll make my directories not the damn operation system. Additionally i go to great troubles to keep the C: partition as small as possible, nothing gets installed there. I usually move dlls and ocx's from the windows directory to the directory of any new program i install, since windows search order is always to look in the current directory first, that usually works.

Why? So its easier to reinstall windows without having to reintall and truck load of app's. It also makes windows faster when there is not so much junk in it.

But anyway, I for one absolutely hate that the game tries to put its damn save games on the c: drive into a directory i don't even have...

Isn't there some commandline og registry setting one can tweak that will put it where it belongs.. in the install directory of the game itself?

It's possible to get "My Documents" off the C: drive by moving it, then using TweakUI or Regedit to update the Registry. I used to do this all the time with Win98 and WinME.

It's even easier with WinXP. Just move the folder, and Windows takes care of the rest.

Assuming Max Payne was written to work with a multi-user environment, there is probably no way to change the location to the Max Payne directory.

Even before "My Documents" existed, programs written to work with a multi-user environment stored their information in \Windows\Profiles\%username%\

When I play Max Payne from Windows XP, the savegames go to the "My Documents" directory for each specific user. It doesn't appear to be hard-coded to C:\My Documents.

Thanks for your reply scotty, but you don't work for them do you?

Why the hell don't they reply, its their stupid design which is causing the problems. It shouldn't be necessary to find strange hack programs to get the game to do what any decent game is supposed to do, ie save in its own directory - if they must make that profile stuff they could do it in the game's own directory.

But its not hardcoded you say? Then i suppose it wouldn't even be possible to hexedit the prg.

Well, perhaps sanity will prevail and a switch will be introduced to solve this problem in a future version.

on the other hand if they can't be bothered to answer i don't suppose they can be bothered to fix the problem.

Remedy did this to be compliant with some Microsoft specs regarding where a game saves it's data. In one of the builds where it was changed to this method, there was an explanation as to why - but I don't have my old pre-release beta notes at home.

It would be very interesting to know why they felt they had to be compliant with that Microsoft spec when (thankfully) no other developers believe they have to.
I prefer to use my My Documents folder for more important data for backup reasons.
