Emerge Desktop is a replacement windows "shell" (the desktop environment normally provided by Windows Explorer) for Windows 2000 and above. In order to replace Windows Explorer as a shell, it provides a system tray (the area that collects the icons collected at the lower right corner in Explorer), called emergeTray. It will also provide access to the users programs (normally accessed with the windows "start" button) via a right-click on the desktop, via emergeCore.

You know it would be nice if you people just *used* your PCs instead of modding them to hell with ram-eating front ends and utilities then complain about massive issues which are somehow the O/S' fault.

It seems like fancy UIs and launchbars are the new "free screensavers!" and IE toolbars of today.

Who says we don't use them? We're tired of the lack of customizability.

Also fwiw I'm not even using this, (hell I've got classic theme going :o)

I'm just saying that when folks have computer issues 9 times out of 10 they are using these kinds of mods. I'm of the school where you install windows, install your programs and thats it. At the most I would use a non-hacked theme, since every theme program out has issues sooner or later.

Actually, it eats less ram then what it used to.
I've never had problem with these "mods"
In fact, most of the time I've used "mods" while using Windows OS

And that computer issue? 9 times out of 10?
Got statistics?

I used to be big on Litestep in the win9x days. Usually my computer was more stable with litestep than when explorer.exe was the shell.

I tried it again after xp came out, and found the situation reversed. Don't think I'd try a shell replacement in xp again.

File manager replacements, however, is another story...
