I've played Max Payne before with no problem, but since I had to format my pc because of a virus, I've had millions of troubles with Max Payne. Most have been fixed, but I'm left with a couple to do now.

The main problem is the sound. When I play Max Payne, it seems that it only likes to play 1 or 2 sound files at once. A sound will start to play, but will get cut off by another sound or nothing at all.

Here's an example:

Max payne goes into bullet time as he pulls of a shootdodge into a bad guy. This is how it should sound:

"Whack him!" *bang* *bang* *bang* "AAAARGH!" *falump*

But this is how it sounds for me:

"Wha-" *ban-* *ba- *ba-* "AAAA-" *fal-*

It's annoying as hell, and unbearable to play, and Max Payne is just the coolest game ever, I just need to play it!

So if anybody could help me out, I'd be most grateful images/icons/smile.gif

Make sure you don't have the sound channels in the options turned all the way down.

Ok, then check for hardware conflicts and update your soundcard drivers. And it might help if you'd tell your computer specs.

Well, I think it's my sound card. I mean, I try to update it, but AOpen's website is so not user friendly! But my sound card used to be fine.

Well, here's an email I sent to the take2 tech support (still waiting for a reply):

Hello,
I've had Max Payne for quite a while now, and have been able to play it with no problem, but just recently, I had to format my hard drive due to a virus, and since then, I have had alot of problems with Max Payne.

I've managed to fix most of them, but I'm still left with 2 that I know of.

One problem is that I can't change the gamma or brightness of Max Payne and any other game. I was able to in the past, but not now. I updated my graphics card's drivers. It's a Magnum/Xpert128/X99/Xpert2000 which was updated from my ATI Rage 128 Rage Fury driver. I had to do this to fix a problem I had before with wobbling, bending textures.
How can I fix this problem of not being able to change my gamma and brightness?

And the main problem I'm having in Max Payne is sound. I don't exactly know what's wrong with it, but it seems like it only allows so many sound files to be played at a time, for a sound file would be cut off by another, and sometimes seems by nothing at all. Every sound is interrupted, enemies making alerting calls, guns being fired, bullet-time noises, everything.
Like I said, this has never been a problem before. My sound card is an AW320/Crystal SoundFusion. It's currently set to Game Compatible Device to fix the problem in Max Payne which freezes the computer when the game is exited.
How can I fix this problem with the sound? I tried to find updates on the internet for my Crystal SoundFusion driver, I looked on AOpen's website, but couldn't find much help there. I have Windows ME, and it says "Use BUILT-IN drivers under WinMe" for every driver possible to download, and I don't know which ones to download either.

Well, that's just about it. Thanks for reading, and I hope you can help me with my problems images/icons/smile.gif

And also, my specs are in between the minimum requirements and recommended requirements of Max Payne (I have 128MB RAM though).

Try using the Windows update, it could provide you with new drivers.
