View Full Version : Commandos
I just reinstalled Commandos (Behind Enemy Lines, from the Ammo Pack), but when I start it, all I get is a blank screen. I can hear audio but can't see anything. I'm using XP and I have the latest DirectX stuff. It wanted me to install DirectX 5, but there was no way I was doing that. DirectX is designed to be backward compatible, right? Anyone have an idea how to fix this?
Edit: I did a reboot and the video came up. Now it looks like I may have to deal with the game running too fast. I can't tell for sure, as I crashed when I switched resolutions.

It's a wonder you could install it on XP without out any fiddling, most people can only play it from cd but then the save function wont work.
If you try MS Virtual PC and install windows 98 on it, if you still have a copy, because Commandos seems to have problems with NT based operating systems.

You might try CPUGrab...I don't know if it works but it works for me when I'm playing outcast :)
Good luck!
It crashes before I can do anything. I got to the video menu one time and tried to switch to the highest resolution and it crashed. Now, it crashes the moment the menu comes up. I thought maybe it's because of the resolution, but I uninstalled/reinstalled in a completely different directory and it still crashes. I guess I last played it before getting this computer in 2003. Stupid non-backward compatible OSes.
Do the problems affect Beyond the Call? What about Commandos 2? I really wanted to play the original, but that "playing from the CD, but no saves" just couldn't work for a game like this.

Beyond the Call of Duty will most likely have the same problem, Commandos 2 works on XP and even on vista.
I'd still would go for using Virtual PC and a copy of windows 98 or 95.
I'll have to look into that. I think I have a physical copy of 98 somewhere.

Also it could be your video drivers.
some of the newer ones have caused old games not to run at all anymore. :o
If you have some old drivers you can try that if you have to play the game.

Yeah, Nvidia has a habit of destroying compatibility with their new drivers. Try playing Enter the Matrix with the Forceware 100 series.

It's has nothing to do with the drivers, Commandos just doesn't work well on XP.
Like I said, it's a wonder he could install it in XP.
What happened was, I clicked the setup.exe and got the little box with a tab that said Install. I clicked that and had to wait about two minutes for anything to happen. I was about to give up, but the install screen came up. I thought I was good to go until it started crashing out.
