I'm not sure how it works, but it's not widescreen for everyone.
When I view Youtube with Firefox, it displays in widescreen. Here's a screenshot of my setup:

With IE and even Chrome, it still displays in the same old regular smaller size on my setup (even when logged in), so I don't think it has to do with screen resolution.

Cause they're rolling out 720.

Hm, but I don't even need to put that fmt=22 bit to get it to be widescreen. That's strange. Anything I view already appears in the widescreen frame, even if it doesn't use up all of the frame. :)
edit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlfKdbWwruY&fmt=22 BTW, this is awesome. :) Thanks for the link.

it's not supposed to, it only uses the 720p source if one is available, (yoou'll only notice it in fullscreen mode)

He's talking about the size of the frame, not the video quality. I have the same issue in every browser except Firefox, as I noted earlier.

Eh, you guys are lucky your own Flash Player even works. I'm stuck with Quicktime which has no bloody fullscreen feature for embedded (ala YT and other) videos. :P

Mine doesn't, at least not in firefox. After watching a video anything you attempt to do freezes Firefox right up and eventually crashes it.

Mine crashes whenever it wants with any browser. No matter which version I used.

Speaking of Flash, if your Flash 9 is working just fine, I recommend waiting a while before upgrading to 10. Experiencing fun new glitches on Hulu, usually with fullscreen mode pausing the image while the audio continues to play, since I upgraded.

Something kind off I think:
Click High Quality
- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fq88FNtInM4
Compare to this, note the URL
- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fq88FNtInM4&fmt=22
Shouldn't high-quality be the same as &fmt=22?
The vid was exported at 1280 x 720, 2 mbps bitrate.

IIRC &fmt=16 was high quality (512x250 or some weird resolution). &fmt=22 is HD which was added quite recently and therefore videos don't yet have direct links to that quality level.

Could be, but I remember choosing high quality for either some vids I'd done (which weren't 1280 or even 720), and they appeared sharper. Other videos that were created for widescreen format appear sharp when choosing high quality.

From Joe's link:
YouTube already provides an option to view higher quality versions for some videos and you can also append "&fmt=18" to the URLs for the other videos. If you add "&fmt=22", some YouTube videos are now available at an even higher quality, which makes the full screen view a very useful option. Compare:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlfKdbWwruY (standard format - mono, resolution: 320x180)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlfKdbWwruY&fmt=18 (stereo, resolution: 480x270)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlfKdbWwruY&fmt=22 (new format - stereo, resolution: 1280x720)
