well, i was playing max payne on my machine, which is as follows:
500 MHz P3 on a ABIT BE6-2 mobo
512 MB SDRAM
viper 770 tnt2 w/32 MB ram
30GB quantum HDD
SONY CRX140E cd writer
with windows 2000 sp2 as my OS
and my game suddenly froze on act 1 chapter 5
"let the gun do the talking"
now, if i try to load saves that were made during that chapter, i consistently get the error:

Exception:
Read of the end of an R_MemoryFile("D:\Documents and Settings\administrator\My Documents\Max Payne Savegames\savegame001.mps")

Closing...

i had previous saves from chaper 4 and can pick up form there no problem. I think that the freezing of my machine may have corrupted the files somehow, but it seems to have corrupted TWO separate files (savegame000.mps and savegame001.mps)
has anyone else come across this error?

Yup, the same thing just happened to me. my saves got corrupted when max payne did its usual crashing. come to think of it i don't think i've ever quit playing max payne normally, i just stop when it crashes.

Well, i guess there is nothing that can be done... except for saving often.

on a hunch, i decided to remove the computer hardware out of my case and just ran the whole thing on my (clean dust free) desk and i found that max payne was far more stable... probably because the computer hardware was able to dissapate heat more readily.
on the odd occasion the game would stall for a second and then resume, and then later crash, when the computer was in the case. but on the desk this never occurred. heat must be the factor.

If the game runs OK when you take off the case, you cannot blame the game. The game is very intensive on your hardware, and if your hardware is overheating and causing crashes, this is not the games fault. Invest in some proper cooling for your system or you will have problems with games in the future.
