This is strange, it happened first a few days ago, that's a couple days after I had originally installed my game.

Anyhow, everything worked fine but this night I went to play it and it showed the Max Payne splash screen. The CD light was blinking as though the CD was being accessed, all seemed normal. But then the splash screen went away, the CD light was still blinking as though the game was about to load, but for some reason I then got the error that is something like "MaxPayne.exe has caused an error in ~394B.tmp" or something close to that. I searched for that 394B.tmp file but the only time it shows up is right when the game is starting, after that it disappears from the TEMP folder. I assume it has something to do with startup of the game.

I uninstalled the game, reinstalled, tried different directories, different install sizes, and couldn't seem to get it working. Then randomly it decided to work again. I don't know why it does this. It happened once again last night and I went through that stuff again. I tried updating when I saw that there was a patch but that didn't seem to fix it either.

Anyone know what might cause this?

It might be the copyprotection that finds your CD-ROM hard to work with. Have you tried the v1.01 patch?

When I updated with the patch, rather than recieving that error message it would instead do nothing. So essentially it would do the same thing by not letting me play the game, it just wouldn't show the error message first.

I did a scan on the CD and it has SafeDisc protection. Many of my games use this protection, Deus Ex, Darkstone, Unreal Tournament (I think) and I didn't have a problem so far. I am not sure what could cause it on this game either.

disable DMA for your cdrom?
