View Full Version : Those "Holy <beep>" moments in gaming... [possible spoilers]

Have you ever had a moment in which a video game that suddenly made you jump and cuss at the screen?
Well, here are mine:
1. Doom/Ultimate Doom:
a. The end of episode 1
At the end of the first episode, the player must enter a portal, after which the player's health rapidly drains until the episode ends right before the player is supposed to due.
b. The boss of episode 2
The Cyberdemon wasn't mentioned in the manual and I had no idea what was happening.
Cyberdemon: ROOOAAAAAR!!
Me: Whoa, what was that? *gets splattered by rockets*
2. Doom 3 - the demon invasion
The demon invasion after the player talks to a technician. I knew what was going to happen but it still scared the heck out of me.
3. Space Quest I - the first level
If the player takes too much time on the first level (the starship Arcada), it self-destructs. I was like "What the %@#$?" when the starship exploded and I was presented with a "game over" screen.
4. Resident Evil 4
I've never played this game myself, but I was watching one of my suitemates play it some time ago. The scene where a character suddenly gets impaled by a huge tentacle made both of us jump.
5. Indiana Jones' Greatest Adventures
In the catacomb level, there are gigantic bursts of flame that fly through the level peridically and can kill the player instantly. I certainly didn't see that coming!

Resident Evil 2:
In the interrogation room, a monster jumps through the mirror glass. First time it makes you
jump, 2nd, 3rd, etc. times I was like "I now it's coming, I know it's coming" *monster jumps through glass*
Call of Cthulhu:
The part where you wake up and need to get the hell out of the hotel, because
the whole town is chopping down your door and that's the same thing that they want to do to you. Now that's a "holy hell" moment.

I have yet to see a game take advantage of the "limited flashlight life" for dramatic effect. I would love to see a scene where you run out of flashlight power in a dark place and are forced to wait a bit for it to recharge. Then, when you turn the flashlight on, <BAM!> there's a monster standing right in front of you who has been waiting the whole time.

Silent Hill 2 (or maybe it was 3)
The scene were you walk to a locked toilet door. The player says he/she thinks someone is in there. You knock but nothing happens so you walk away and....
you hear a loud scream and THUD!! as soon as you turn your back and walk away
Silent Hill 3
The infamous "Mirror Room" scene. Basically you walk into a room with a huge wall mirror, then the door is locked and you cant escape. Nothing happens for a bit as you walk around... then this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=77XrQUfcmz4&NR=1&fmt=18
Since the video quality isnt the best i'll explain what youre supposed to be seeing below...
Basically, everything in the reflection (which seems like another room) starts to change into the Silent Hill "dark/nightmare world". The walls decay and bleed and so does your characters reflection.
Then suddenly the bleeding starts to spill into YOUR room (non-reflection side) and you cant exit. The entire room changes and then suddenly your characters reflection STOPS moving. It looks directly at you while covered in blood and cuts.
Basically, it doesnt hurt you and you can now leave the room.. BUT it scares the shit out of you and causes panic like never before!

You mean her attempt to catch up, right? ;)
As for me, it wasn't really a "holyshit" shocking/scary moment but I remember cussing at the screen back in Grim Fandango, near the end. :( Poor old Salvatore...and that saigon whore who cut his head off.

In three there's a similar scene in a closet there's a mannequin. When you walk away form it there's a sudden almost comical "yelp" then when you turn back the mannequin's head is on the floor.

Also a thing I still find creepy about Resident Evil 4:

Ocarina of Time
After taking the Master Sword, seeing how f*cked up Hyrule is
The first time you play or see Portal, it takes your brain a minute to wrap itself around the situation and you're left with a kind of WTF? feeling.
Damn near every second of Resident Evil 2 and 4
The first time you play a game like Oblivion, and you start heading up to the highest point you can find, waiting for that invisible wall to stop you but it never comes, then you find yourself looking out from a mountaintop back at where you started from. ( I wasted a lot of time wandering in that game :) )

FEAR;
Ladder scene, both at the top and bottom. That was rather unexpected when I first checked out the demo when it was released.

I've just thought of two more:
1. Super Mario World
A long time ago, I was playing Super Mario World with a very old friend and we were both rather inexperienced with the game. We got to the boss room of one of the fortresses and had to fight four Reznors. After beating two of them, the bridge above the lava begins to disintegrate. Needless to say, we ended up dying (although we eventually beat the level).
2. Donkey Kong Country
After you beat the final boss (King K. Rool) once, fake credits begin to scroll. After the credits, you'll have to fight him a second time. I got tricked by the fake credits, and although I became suspicious, I was unable to react in time before King K. Rool got back up and killed me.

There were a half dozen or so in the original Call of Duty, for me. The Russian "Defend the House from the tanks and waves of soldiers" mission and the final Reichstag mission come to mind. Christ I loved that ending.
Also there were a bunch of them in Homeworld 2, particularly the last fight with the Vaygr (the penultimate mission). Also, Sins of a Solar Empire.

Let's see now...
No One Lives Forever 2
The first time you encounter a Super Soldier...I must have wasted tons of ammunition and hiding in ventilation ducts before I found my escape route I was panicking and swearing that much...
System Shock 2
Any part of it.
Diablo 2
Not really much of a spoiler to anyone who has played D2 online: see biiiiiiiiiiig monster. Very powerful unique. With lots of mates. And they all want to rip you a new one...which in itself isn't too bad. But then the biggest gremlin of them all appears.....Battle.net lag! Then it's a mad dash to get a town portal open and dive into it before you get completely and utterly slaughtered by The Evil Lag Monster You Can Do Nothing About That You Haven't Done Already....
Half Life 1
Everyone should know about this by now, if not, you're a three headed monkey...and this "holy <beep>" moment is a happy one: the train ride intro. Enough said.
Unreal
The first time you get outside on your very first playthrough. This would have been back in the day of its original release or very soon afterwards.
Unreal Tournament
Firing the Redeemer for the first time in guided mode. Optionally chasing a friend in a multiplayer game and watching them pee their virtual pants... :D
F.E.A.R.
No spoiler tag for this one either, as anyone who has played it multiplayer with a certain individual...managing to kill TerminX more than once in succession one-on-one without any outside interference. There's a holy beep moment right there! :P
But from TerminX's, Damien's, Micki!'s and Yatta's point of view (and others who played from here) a certain "holy <beep>!" moment is whenever they first got caught by my sneaky Dick Dastardly & Muttley-style proximity mine traps! BWAHAHAHAHAhahahahaaaa! :D
Anyways, I can't think of anymore right now, apart from maybe experiencing your first Zergling Rush attack on your undefended "caught me with ye pants down" base...

Yickle!

There are too many to list
Alone in the dark, where the camera pans out and the monster jumps through the window
Playing some of the dark games where a fast enemy comes out of nowhere (obvious), like in Fallout 3, Doom 3, etc.
dropping the nuke in empire Earth 2
watching the physics in AOE 3 from cannons tearing up infantry and horsemen in swamp lands

I'd have said "Holy Shit" for sure if Duke hadn't said it first.
Ditto. It's the classic definition of the 'Holy Shit' moment. Blowing up a building and interacting with a stripper for the first time come close too. :)
I'll add-
BioShock The splicer turning up behind you in the dental clinic. Eyes watching you from hidey holes. Going up to a mourning splicer unsure if you want to attack or comfort them.
Crysis When dawn erupts into a mass battle with aircraft going down. Then the Alien Mothership.
FEAR: Whenever I caught Her watching me.
Call of Duty Recreation of that opening Soviet scene from Enemy at the Gates
Undying Hounds crawling across the ceiling. Decapitated head talking. The first extra-dimensional trip. Final villain reveal.
Aliens Vs. Predator 2 First time I killed a xeno, had my eyes shut. It was in the Marine mission demo. Another xeno that uncurls when you enter a room. The predator on the aircraft thing was pretty sweet too
Half-life Train ride especially with the robot navigating through toxic waste. Then when the marine kills a scientist, when marines use grenades to flush me out, the whole green tentacle sequence, when you crawl into a pipe and the marine places a detpack at the other end, the first time you blow up a gunship and coming out the other end of a sewer to view the cliff-side panorama(also in the Black Mesa trailer).
Portal When you're about to be killed
HL2 & Episodes. A lot of moments in HL2 were known to me going in from previews, like the gravity gun with buzz saws, playing catch with Dog, etc but they still count I suppose. Dog jumping on that ship and pretty much any animated scene with him in it was awe inspiring. Taking down striders with a gravity gun, sticky mines and a pistol is something I'm not quite sure how I accomplished. A lot of animated sequences like the citadel going up and saving Alyx were impressive.
Many many Blizzard cinematics. Especially from StarCraft & Warcraft III: ROC & TFT.

Was this actually deliberate, then? Because I remember it and it sure as shit scared the **** out of me (I told my girlfriend about it the next day and it probably bored her) but I thought it was a bug because I walked around a bit and he wasn't attacking, so I thought it was just a freaky-ass AI bug.
Portal When you're about to be killed
I absolutely agree. I'm stupid and I didn't see the specific way that was going to happen but I rounded that corner and my heart started pounding and I made the right move the first time and it was thrilling. That was so awesome.
HL2 & Episodes. The whole "Follow Freeman" Chapter was amazing for me, especially the first time through.

I wasn't referring to any one splicer actually. And I never tried walking around. I approached them from behind and they always reacted once I got too close. The voice acting for those random bits of dialog was so great.

The Dandy Dentist pretty much sold that game for me.
The rest are pretty generic:
SH2
Pyramid Head stabs himself in the face. It kind of sums up the entire series: There is something very wrong here.
Undying
Though the scene where you see the painting in Elizabeth's room is a jolt, there was something about going to the island and encountering the leprechaun. Somehow that seemed weirder than anything else in the game. Just weird.
Serious Sam: The First Encounter
The final boss. Nah, you aren't going to make me fight THAT thing?
MGS3
Getting kissed, blowing up the bridge and watching the Shagohad come back for more. Normally the kiss wouldn't work, the bridge would have been -eh, and boss coming back would have been trite, but it is balanced out with all that you have already gone though in the game. So it not only works but is satisfying and makes the ending that much more satisfying. Also you get to walk away feeling like you were the hero in an acion movie. Isn't that what its all about?

Thirded. Or fourthed. The Shalebridge Cradle is one of those levels where you end up telling the story to yourself. You can end up missing a huge amount of the story if you're not paying attention and just treat it as a 'run and gun' level.
This PDF is a wonderful document (http://gillen.cream.org/thecradle.pdf) that covers the whole experience and may make you notice small details that you didn't spot the first time through. It's not a step-by-step walkthrough but it does interview the level designer and reveals his overall motivations and goals in creating it.
Like Axion said, the Shalebridge Cradle in Thief: Deadly Shadows.
When you go up the tower's wodden stairs and then as you approach Laurel (the little ghostly girl) bangs on the door.
Or,
When you go into the asylum part, pick the lock of a cell, open the door and then find a zombie, sitting calmly on a chair, paying no attention to you and looking at a wall where he hung dead birds.

lol, Ski-Free! I used to play that far too much.
GTAIV. There's a bridge in the north of the starting island. I stood on it and looked out over the city. It was a "Holy ****, that looks awesome despite medium textures and a lowish res" moment.
Games have surely come a long way since Ski-Free!

SkiFree wasn't exactly cutting edge in 1991 though. ;)
Shadow Warrior
On the first level of Wanton Destruction, there's a garage door with bars on the inside with some beasts in there. Well it was possible for them to escape through the bars and it usually happened when you walked a short distance away from them.

There were few moments in games where I literally just stood still and whispered "holy shit" to myself. But I can't really remember most of them, which bothers me somehow... Well, maybe Half-Life, first encounter with Tentacles in Blast Pit.

That is whats wrong with games and anime. Some of there guys look like girls. It is not a big deal, but its a still wtf moment when you say "holy crap, thats a guy?" and vice versa.
