View Full Version : Steam?

Is it just my internet connection or has Steam festively soiled it's pants tonight?

NutWrench

I just connected with no problem.

The only thing I can think of that might be slowing it down is people giving gifts through Steam. (Day before Christmas, after all. Lots of folks using the secure server, downloading new content. etc)

Thanks for checking for me. I'm getting 403 forbidden(!) although Steam itself will load the store won't display and neither will the Steam forum. No big deal. I'll try again later.

I can't even get steampowered.com to come up in the browser. I suspect either the servers are getting hammered hard from a holiday rush, or someone has initiated a "denail of service" attack.

i dunno, but i thought they were going to release some xmas specials, looks like they won't sell at all, i wonder how much $ they are losing right now.

I doubt this. If your servers can host hugely popular online games then surely you can keep a site up?

I just spent my $100 for Steam! 11 Games on the cheap!

Heavy Weapon Deluxe - $0.99 was $9.99!
Alpha Prime - $2.49 was $4.99
Tank Universal - $4.99 was $9.99
Iron Warriors: T-72 Tank Command - $2.49 was $4.99
Painkiller: Overdose - $7.49 was $9.99
Shattered Union - $7.49 was $9.99
Full Spectrum Warrior Pack - $11.49 was $14.99
Blazing Angels Pack - $18.74 was $24.99
Heroes Of Annihilated Empires - $7.49 was $14.99
Attack On Pearl Harbor - $8.99 was $9.99
and Assassin's Creed - $22.49 was $29.99

And I know some of those games just came down in price as it is the last few months...

Some other awesome deals were there too if I only had more money to put on Steam games, like the 3 Warhammer games for $30...

EDIT: F*** IT! I bought the Warhammer pack too! :D I had an extra $20 laying around from a relative... :)

Picked up BioShock like everybody else. Trying to talk my significant other into getting me the Id Super Pack and I'm seriously considering Portal.

Strange, double purchasing games I already own for the 360. Good idea though; I have a backup (that I may never even install) and Valve Employees get money hats for New Years. Everybody wins.

So when is 3DR going to give me the chance to re-repurchase Duke? :)

Since when has steam added this -

"3rd-party DRM: SecuROM™
5 machine activation limit "

I found it on the FC2 page. Very good move - I want to be fully informed before buying my games. I hope they enforce this so that ALL games with third party DRM are listed.

peoplessi
01-02-2009, 01:52 PM
Having extra DRM is fcking stupid, and should be disallowed by Steam. There is no real need for it with Steam. In a way that just shows how much the head honchos know about the market they are in - meaning the publishers that put their games on Steam.

avatar_58
01-02-2009, 01:56 PM
Oh I know, but they used to just slip it in there without any notice. Look at Bioshock - it used Securom and actually caused major grief considering most people would assume installing on multiple PC's is part of the point of Steam. So they hit the 5 activation limit really quickly.

I'm actually a little annoyed that FC2 employs this given I chose steam over retail hoping to avoid it. There's no reason why it needs to have activation limits when steam itself acts as an activation-drm service in itself.

From what I understand, they provided free CDs with the magazine with Dark Messiah Might and Magic on them, however due to a misprint some of the CDs did not have CD keys. This service was supposed to be for subscribers who missed the CD keys.

That would just reverse all my monitors for EVERY PROGRAM. I just want Steam to spawn this one game on Monitor 2, and not change anything else.

You could try running the game in window mode, then drag it over to Monitor 2, then maximize it (Alt-Enter typically) and it would still be there. Not sure if it would remember the setting, but it should work.

Do you know if there's a way to force Steam to play a game on a monitor other than my primary one? Steam keeps wanting to play a game on Monitor 1, and I would really rather it play it on Monitor 2.

Is there a way to force that at all? Thanks.

I don't know if you're fond of a 3rd party program doing the trick for you, but Ultramon (http://realtimesoft.com/ultramon/) uses shortcuts to move a window to an other monitor, or you could try the profile system, it's a fast way to change the monitor settings.

Thought of that. That does get it working on Monitor 2, but next time, it's back on Monitor 1.

Can't you setup multiple monitor configs in your graphics card options? I think nvidia desktop does it. Dunno about ATI.

Anyone knows how to remove the "gifts" column in the Steam games tab? You can right-click them to disable them, but gifts always come back no matter what.

Can you post a screenshot of what you mean or something? I don't see any "gifts" here on my account:

EDIT: When I think about I did have a "gift" column behind Half Life 2 and Episode 1 when I got Orange box. I don't know why its gone or how it dissapeared. I gifted away those two but otherwise did nothing more :O

Ah, that's probably it. I never gave my gifts to anyone so the column always comes back on each reboot.
