Not since I ran into the Homecoming Queen in 10th grade have I been as teased as I have by Max Payne. The greatness of this game continues to elude me even today. I have tried every possible fix know to try and make this game play to no avail, even several fresh reinstalls. My success has been limited to the first 1 minute of the Tutorial. Just enough to send me on an eternal pursuit for this game to work.

Remedy has said there is nothing wrong with Max, however Talonsoft support says they know there are bugs in several spots and are currently working to fix them ASAP. My only question is how can any company claim the game is so stable when on over 10 forum sites I have seen nothing but problems. Not to mention that every other game I have can play without problems. Is it just me or should a game be able to play when it's installed with minimal support issues arrising. Never have I seen someone claim such stability only to offer so many "fixes" by way of the Bios adjustments and install of Beta software. I really don't want to jeoprodize all of my system for one game.

I am lsting my specs below in the hopes someone may have an answer I have not seen or thought of yet:
1.4 Ghz AMD Athlon
1 Ghz PC133 Ram
Asus A7A266 MOBO
Asus Geforce 3 64Mb Deluxe
SoundBlaster Live! 5.1 X-Gamer
16X Pioneer DVD
Mitsumi Floppy
Windows 2000 PRo SP2
DirectX 8a
nVidia Driver 14.70
All other Drivers and Bios most current version out there.

I would be REALLY be grateful for any suggestions. I would love to get this Max Payne issue put to bed, just like I did the homecoming queen.
Thanks,
TDay

Use the 12.90 NVidia drivers. MP crashes on my system when I use the 14.70s.

BTW, I also run Win2k SP2 on an AMD system, for what it's worth.

Also IMNSHO... the 12.90 drivers are the latest available on the NVIDIA site, so using the 14.70s and blaming MP for not running isn't terribly fair.

Maybe it wasn't clear but I have tried almost every fix I have seen listed on several web site postings. I have tried DirectX 8.1 and drivers 12.40 & 12.90 in several configurations. I am really looking for someone with a simular setup that might have found what few changes were needed to make this work.
Thanks

In fact, you weren't clear. What you said was:
quote:
I have tried every possible fix know to try and make this game play to no avail, even several fresh reinstalls.

(emphasis mine)

Since you were obviously exagerating, I decided to start trying to help you with the most obvious solution.

I have a similar setup, and all I had to do was a) install the patch, and b) install the 12.90 drivers. Those were the few changes I needed to make to get it to work.

I'm obviously of no help to you so I'll shut up now and let you find your help elsewhere.

THANK YOU for the previous post. I did not mean to sound rude or unappreciative for the help I was just wanting to clarify that I have previously tried most things that have been listed. You're system is close to mine and so I went back and tried it again.

I changed everything I could remember back to standard except I made sure I had the 1. patch for MP & 2. I reinstalled the 12.90 nVidia driver. I however also used the basic sound driver under the "dxdiag" to get more stability. Now the only problem is the sound is crackly and is hard to understand. Does anyone have a workaround for this. Again my normal sound was SoundBlaster Live! 5.1 X-Gamer. Is there a basic driver I can reinstall of somesort, or remove SoundBlaster, or ..... ?

See your post was something that helped. And I don't think I am being hard on anyone, it's just when I pay for something I expect it to operate well at a basic level without having to go to all the trouble I and several others have had to go to in getting this game to even perform. Also, it doesn't help when one support company is saying there is no problem and another is saying they know there are issues and are working on it.

Regardless thank you for your suggestions they did help so far.
