View Full Version : Bug? Too much ram makes for a sluggish Max

I just recently upgraded my ram from 512mb of pc/133 cl2 micron to 768mb pc/133 cl2 ECC Micron.
(Replaced 2 256mb sticks with 3 new sticks)
Now, with just 2 of those ECC sticks installed, Max runs ok, IE: nice high framerate. (system specs below) But with all 768mb installed, it gets slow and choppy. Is this a known issue? This is happening on a clean install of Win98se, and this problem does not affect other games I have. I was also able to reproduce this problem on my Win2k install as well. I would also like to note that all drivers are up to date.

Sys specs
1.4ghz athlon 266fsb on Abit KT7A-Raid
768mb micon pc/133 cl2 ecc
visiontek gf3
sblive 5.1
Win98SE on one of the HDD's (ATA/100 onboard highpoint raid controller)
Win2k on another HDD
DX8.0a installed on both OS's.
Both fresh installs as of 8/29.

I had the same problems with my rig until I switched to the 12.90 Nvidia drivers and disabled antialiasing. Multi shooters slowed MP down so much, I had a hard time hitting my targets. My aim would jump, then stall, then jump again. Luckily, theirs would too. Anyway, the game still looks awesome at 1024 X 768/16 with triple buffers and everything else maxed out and now, I can fire that AR15 as fast as I want!

My rig:
PIII 1gig@1040mhz on Asus CUSL2
512 Mbs Crucial cas2 PC133 SDRAM
Asus v8200 GF3/64
Acoustic Edge
Pioneer 16X DVD ROM & Plextor 12/10/32A CDRW
2 Maxtor 30gig UDMA100 7200RPM HD's

Can you please tell me more about the 12.90 Nvidia drivers? I have the GeForce3 card and 12.41 update. What is the difference between 12.90 and 12.40?

Thanks in advance,

Woody

I had to remove 128 MB of ram to get the game back up to speed, with 640, the game became slow as hell.

Ive got a
1.2 GHz Athlon on asus A7V Mobo
512 MB ram
Geforce 2 Ultra
SB Live
Win 2000

The detonator 12.90 are the best out there so everyone who has a Geforce card should go get it now at http://www.guru3d.com or just wait cause in 2 weeks the detonators 4 will be released.

It's not the video drivers. I've already tried that, please read my post, all drivers are up to date. Pepe has also said he's experienced the same problem. Having over 512mb of RAM bugs up Max Payne. Anyone from Remedy care to test this? Or is this known already?

*coughs* guys, if you've got win9X, it doesn't support more then 512mb of ram (that's microsoft for ya).. and can cause problems if you use more then that.

Pretty common knowlage really, but hey no idea why it would do that on a win 2k system (then again.. microsoft).

Oh nevermind. I give up.
It doesn't run with more than 512mb of ram no matter what os. OK? Try it for yourself and see, then come back here and tell me it's my OS or my drivers or my grandmother...

Yeah, I have tried this now and can confirm that my jerkiness goes when I remove half the RAM from my PC.

Is this going to be fixed?

No, this only seems to be a problem with those that have over 512mb of ram.

A better question: Is Remedy even aware of it?
No responses here from them or 3dr so either they haven't looked, or they don't care.
I honestly don't care anymore myself, I uninstalled it and gave my copy to a friend.

I have the same problem...

My system:
1GHz Athlon
ASUS A7V flashed to v1008
512MB of RAM
Hercules Prophet II GTS Pro (GeForce 2)

In 1024x768x32, high settings, no antialiasing, bilinear filter, 16bit texure colors, fogging on, sounds on, task switching off, and triple screen buffers.

I can't get more than 10FPS. If I keep the same options except click medium settings I get about 15-20FPS.

I have the VIA 4in1 drivers (v4.32)
I have tried the latest nVidia as well as hercules drivers (v12.90, v14.10) respectively with the same results.

I have tried fast write enabled/disabled.

I have the AGP aperture set to 256MB.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Look at your display properties, some drivers put AA standard to 2x, wich lowers peerformance considerably in some games. Even if you put it of in the game options, it still is used.

You guys do know that Win9x cant handle more than 512mb right? Thats the limit in WinME, and with 98 I think its even lower. Theres a reg hack that supposedly will allow more ram, but Win9x really is built to handle that much ram.

If you need that much ram you should just use W2K.

Aurora51 please read my first post.

"I was also able to reproduce this problem on my Win2k install as well."

Most of us already know Win9x's ram limitations.
For those who don't here:

Excerpt from MS's KB found in article Q304943 (http://support.microsoft.com/directory/article.asp?ID=KB;EN-US;Q304943): Windows Me and Windows 98 are not designed to handle more than 1 GB of RAM. More than 1 GB can lead to potential system instability.
