Game controls

I am looking for some help from you guys out there. Max Payne is a great game but I find the controls akward. I have a Gravis Grip game controlers and they work on all my other games, and since this is a shoot- action game, it would be appropiate for it to be able to use controlers. However, I can't seem to get my controler to work in the game. Could you please tell me how to do it, or if you can use any controller at all.

If your controller has software that can re-map controller actions to keyboard and mouse functions, all you have to do is write down the keyboard and mouse settings, then fire up your game controller software and create a new profile using those keys. (thumbpad up = "W", thumbpad down = "S", etc)

It would be nice if they had just used DirectInput and allowed the functions of any DirectInput-compliant controller to be mapped to any game function. Even though the developers (and many gamers) may never use a game controller, this would've made life a lot easier for those that do.
