OK - Ive got Max in a directory OTHER than the one it was originally installed in (New PC and HD and operating system - files were manually copied across) and as such, the patch refuses to install cause MP isnt installed in the right directory. Now since i dont have a working CD Rom anymore since my old one broke and the new one is shipping as i speak - there is no way i can re-install the game and get the patch to install.

SURELY there is a way to get the patch to install into my C:/Max Payne/ directory!?!?!

Come on guys - i need this patch to install! (Im stuck with the Geforce 3/Athlon/Win2K problem )

thanks in advance for any help! images/icons/smile.gif images/icons/smile.gif images/icons/smile.gif

I haven't dealt with this problem first-hand, but I may have the answer. images/icons/smile.gif

If you still have access to the original computer, try searching for and exporting the appropriate Registry branches (Remedy Entertainment, in Software from both HKCU and HKLM), then merging them with your current Registry. If you're going from Windows XP (and possibly 2000) to Windows NT4 / 9x / ME, be sure to export in NT4 / 9x compatible format.

\HKLM\Software\Remedy Entertainment\Max Payne is probably the critical one. It contains subkeys containing values, including the .exe path and version number.

Once you have the appropriate branches imported, you can edit the value containing the .exe path to reflect where Max Payne is located on your new computer.

good idea..... but i dont have my original registry, all formatted into the ether! 8)

I remember the same problem with Unreal Tournament and the patches for that aswell, i remember having to mess around with command line switches in the executable properties or something.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm

You may be out of luck, anyways. Both Max Payne 1.00 and 1.01 have a Safedisc CD check, so even if you do get the patch applied, you won't be able to play until your new CD-ROM arrives, anyways.

I hope everything works out for you. Your best bet will be to reinstall when you get your CD-ROM, patch, then fix it. I did that myself to avoid the aggravation of always having to use the CD.

Looks like nothing else will work OTHER than a whole re-installation, damn 8(

Dunno why i'm saying this you're probably using a warez(okay maybe your not, but I'm dubious)... why don't you just MOVE the max payne dir to where the patch wants to put it's files? images/icons/smile.gif

no - im not using a warez copy. If you have as many cd's as i do, then you get sick of trying to hunt for a cd JUST to play a game, hence the fixed executables.
The patch doesnt even ask you for a directory, it starts up, searches automatically then quits on you. The only way for the patch to work (presumeably) is by having registry strings in place, that the patch looks for. Obviously this ruins it, if you move games across drives and directories.
