I set up a second PC at my appartment for LAN play (among other things) today. What I'd like to do additionally to playing UT2004 against myself is having occasional Quake Head Hunters matches with anybody I can lure into my cave. Both machines run WinXP. Im would like to avoid using oldschool GLQuake and QW via DOSBox, not only because I hoped to find something visually more advanced than GLQuake but also because I would prefer a less complicated solution.
ezQuake has been recommended to me in the past but it seems not really designed for easy LAN play (seems to be exclusively focused on internet play, I'm not sure, only spent a few minutes with it so far) or mod support (Head Hunters is a must have mod!). A pity as the game tends to look fabulous with it.
Now, does anybody here know a better solution to my dilemma?
Of course I'm always interested in other, additional suggestions that could highten my Quake LAN pleasures.

Darkplaces is a awesome port of quake.

I'll have to find the link to the Quake port I use. Its just a simple GLQuake clone but its nice to use, and mods actually work unlike a lot of ports.

You know, for all the damn Quake ports out there, most of them suck. Very hard to actually find what you want from Quake...

This is awesome, I was always looking for a source port of WinQuake (the software renderer) with advanced features! :D

If you're still stuck post over in General at http://www.celephais.net/board/forum.php Quake community there

Quake in DOSBox is completely unnecesssary these days what with simple, fixed GL ports like http://www.celephais.net/fitzquake (or the eye-candy crap if that's your bag).

I've had success with ezQuake in a virtual lan, but never tried any mods with it. There's also some ports like FuhQuake ( http://wiki.quakeworld.nu/FuhQuake official site is broke though but there are some screens -- DL http://www.fileshack.com/file.x/2973/FuhQuake+Installer+v0.31 ) and JoeQuake http://joequake.runecentral.com/shots.html

Is there a version that can play music from MP3 files on your hard drive, rather than trying to play music from CD (using the old-fashioned technique that requires your sound card to be connected directly to your CD/DVD drive)? For some reason I still want to listen to the NiN soundtrack :tinyted:

http://nquake.com/ - ezQuake with installer, for me this is the best version. MP works, I can't see why lan play wouldn't work? There is no reason for it not to work. Just setup a server, and others connect?

I'm sure there are but I just searched and can only find ezQuake has MP3/winamp control support but not sure that it will load an mp3 based on level. Also ezQuake is a QuakeWorld client and not sure that it supports single player.

I'd just run a Winamp playlist and use media keys on your keyboard if you have any.

BTW for LAN play if no one can connect make sure to add this: parameter to shortcut quake-executable.exe -listen x (where x = 1 for 1 player and so on)

Wasn't this a search for MP client for LAN? There is only the nostalgic reason to play the SP :)

To thread starter, you could setup http://qw-dev.net/projects/mvdsv/news - but that's bit robust solution if you are only going to play matches 1v1 or with less than 10 people.

ezQuake supports SP.

Thanks a lot, guys. I'm gonna do some downloading today...

Right cause the SP scene is so dead! :censored:

Based on what you linked, yes. SP scene is vastly dead compared to MP. What was your point? :)

It's not dead, you're wrong. Guys at the forum there are always churning out SP levels.

I said compared to MP, and that's just my opinion. Mostly they are churning out MP maps.
