Anyone else seen this problem? When I attempt to launch Max Payne, I get the configuration options, then continue on, and I see the loader screen, then a crash to the desktop with the following error:

Exception in engineInit: R_ScriptLoader: File "\data\database\Sounds\hotel.txt" ends with opened bracket from line 798!

I've tried conservative settings, moved back to the 12.40 nVidia drivers, disabled the sound, reinstalled DirectX8.0a, redownloaded the demo again, installed it to a different drive, tried changing my inital desktop resolution, no dice.

I have a Pentium 3 - 700 (not overclocked), 256MB RAM, Abit BE-6 II motherboard, Windows 98SE, and an eVGA GeForce2MX 32MB AGP.

Any advice? I like what I hear about the game, but am not going to buy it if the demo won't even work.

Thanks.

My advice, dont buy it. I thought maybe my system was hosed , but then again, many other games ran fine on my system. So out of curiousity i checked the web, and found hordes of bug issues/reports, and severe ones at that. I then talked with several of my gaming buds, noone could get it to work either, including myself. So, in short, do not buy it unless you want to be frustrated to no end, or are feeling lucky.

I've never even heard of that error before. Have you gone through the help stuff available at http://www.maxpayne.com/support/index.html ?

I went through the help stuff, but unfortunately, nothing seems to apply. I'm not running anything strange, even unloaded my firewall software. No weird disk caching utils, or compression, or anything. In between installs, I even went manually into the registry to delete entries, and rebooted, but still no luck. Well, gonna try new video drivers, and one more install, then I think I'll give it a rest, unless someone has an idea that hasn't occurred to me.

Thanks.

I suggest redownloading the demo without the firewall on download it from www.3dfiles.com (http://www.3dfiles.com) or www.downloads.com (http://www.downloads.com) there try that =P maybe its just a corrupt file from that site . images/icons/smile.gif
