Anybody else playing this? It's a cool little game for the Nintendo DS that has a little story mode where you're tasked with playing 8-bit classics and beating whatever challenge has been put before you (score 200,000 points; beat level 4 without dying; etc.).

The twist is that these "classics" are actually brand new games that are so authentic that you'll swear you remember playing them as a kid. Even cooler, once you've beaten a game's challenges in story mode, the game is unlocked for freeplay, and they're all complete, fleshed-out games. It's like having a compilation of brand new-classics.

Throughout the course of the story mode, you also get access to game magazines that offer hints and cheat codes to help you beat the various challenges. So this isn't just an homage to 8-bit games but an homage to 80's gaming culture. I feel like a kid again.

I've beaten the first two game challenges and have unlocked the third game. I'm loving it. This is the coolest game I've played in years. It definitely lives up to its "retro" billing, yet the games feel fresh and original.

Actually, in the trailer, the 2nd platform video looks a lot like Ninja Gaiden for the NES.

That's Robot Ninja Haggle Man 3. :D

Actually, all the games draw inspiration from real games, but they're not clones or remakes since they borrow elements from a lot of different games and combine them into something new and fresh.

I've been looking forward to it, right up my alley. Its getting great reviews too, so hopefully people will buy it so Retro Game Challenge 2 will get localized in the states.

RGC 2 has an awesome game called Demon Returns that looks like a cross between Super Mario & Castlevania.

So what is this, some sort of Wario Ware only with longer games/goals?

Im assuming you only play bits and pieces of the games to complete certain challenges.
Once you complete the challenges, the mini challenge games unlock to full games to play through.

Imagine having to jump on a certain amount of turtle shells in a small section of a level super mario bros in l order to play the full game.

Plan to pick this up regardless but I'm curious, how long are the individual games typically?

Not really. The story mode takes you from 1984 to 1989, and you'll only have access to one new game at a time. So, for example, you start with Cosmic Gate and four sequential challenges given to you one at a time (beat stage 2; open 2 warp gates; score 200,000 points; etc.). Once you've completed all four challenges, a new game is "released" and you get four new challenges, and so on until you've unlocked all 8 games (once you've beaten each set of challenges, the game is available at any time in story mode or free play mode). You'll also have access to virtual magazines with cheat codes and other hints to make beating each challenge easier. Also, the challenges vary in length; some of them can be beaten in seconds, but most of them will take you several minutes depending on your level of skill. The challenges for the Dragon Quest-inspired RPG might take you an hour or two. The final challenge is to see the ending of each game, and they're complete games, not mini-games (though in some cases you can use cheats to jump straight to the end). The RPG alone is reported to take 10 to 20 hours to beat, but others like Robot Ninja Haggle Man might take maybe 30-minutes to play to the end.

It's a novel presentation, and each game is a lot of fun, easily as good as any of the best games released in their respective years. If you're a fan of classic gaming then this is pretty much a must-have.
