What can i do to stop the crash to desktop bug?

I am getting about 15 seconds into the intro (IF IM EVEN LUCKY TO GET THERE) then it crashes to the desktop what can i do

i have 1.4amd athlon
GeForce 3
1024 SDRAM
SoundBlaster LIve! 5.1
52x speed CD ROM
Asus a7a-266 mobo!!

The v1.01 patch available here http://www.remedy.fi is supposed to fix this problem.
