Need a logo/symbol/glyph designed

I know a few of the older ubb'ers know about my band "Edges of Seven" (see sig). For the most part I do all the graphic work, but for the life of me, I've never been able to come up with a cool logo/symbol/glyph for the band. Something like Nine Inch Nails' "NIN", Ministry's "M in a circle" symbol, etc. I'm hoping somebody can design a simple yet cool logo that we can use to really represent the band. No colors, just a plain black & white piece that I can plaster everywhere, that I can funk up a bit when I need to, etc. Maybe something using "eo7", "E7", or whatever you can think of. Something cool, a little abstract, something you could see embroidered on clothing, as well as on the front of a CD cover. If someone can come up with something really cool that we can use, we can discuss compensation as well.

Mine is geared towards something a kid would draw on notebook the way i used to do with the Who and Van Halen.

The concept is that the E is through the 7 so that the 7 forms the middle prong of the E and calls to mind the anarchy symbol. Then i put little lines on the edges so that there are 7's on the edges. (nyuk nyuk)

It looks horrible but an artist should be able to make something of it.

I am not a graphical guy, but here's an idea for a concept someone might visualise:

A regular heptagon around a stylised E7? A regular heptagon is of course a polygon with seven edges.

Maybe any of these heptahedrons? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heptahedron

Many of these shapes are interesting and can be fashioned as promotional "stuff" once the symbol is worked out. Playing on the mathematical and topological meaning of the name, of course.

The "O" is hard to implement,unless someones really creative.
Imo,it would be easier to create a logo without it.

Better to logos and such on vector drawing program, like InkScape or Illustrator. I like that design idea, looks cool.

So you're asking people, some without any design experience - to design something for an entity that makes money (the amount isn't the issue, you sell albums yeah?) -- for free? See this (http://www.no-spec.com/articles/ten-reasons/) and this (http://www.no-spec.com/articles/what-is-spec/).

I would suggest hiring an experienced designer and getting a little consultation and concept down so you'll ultimately be satisfied.

Sounds rational, but maybe it will inspire the thread starter on what exactly is he aiming for. The first post was really vague, and most people have just thrown ideas to the ring - not finished products.

If you look at metal band logos through out history,most of them you can tel they were a rip of another bands logo and font.

They either go with a artsy gothic font or something that looks sharp and pointy.
Sometimes a combination of both.

Personally, I kind of like the rough idea that jimbob has, and Rider's - but it's not my project. I only believe it should go through a proper process. Nimoys idea has no real obvious thought behind it. Could it work? Yes, but it would need some tuning. It just comes across whipped up in PS in 5 minutes - and if it is, I wouldn't blame him - he's not being payed.

Now, I realise they're looking for a logo in the vein of NIN and doesn't require much concept at hand -- however, if you were to apply concept beforehand, get dozens of thumbnailed ideas on paper, and really think how it could be made interesting (look at ambigrams) -- you could have a killer symbol. I don't see anyone here doing that, but a professional designer would.

My intention isn't to come off as a prick, just giving insight and advice from a fellow designer.

That wouldn't even print very well in black-and-white (not grayscale) due to the gradients. You never know when you'd need to print just black, so it's best to start from there.

Before I address all the extremely cool ideas you guys have displayed, I want to address Phait. I guess it's mainly the fact that I've been here for over 10 years & everyone (yourself included) has always been really cool about helping each other out. This is basically asking for a favor that could lead to some financial compensation if we use someone's submitted design. We're all still working day jobs in the band at this point, but should things take off for us, we remember everyone who helped us get there. It's pretty informal at this point, plus I know that there are some wicked artists here :)
On to these examples guys, these are pretty rad! I don't know where to begin!
Jimbob: kinda diggin the first one, has a Ministry vibe to it
peoplessi: the first 2 are pretty sweet...though a little too close to the nin logo. Still I do like the "E7" idea surrounded by a border of some sort.
Nessus: Very cool concept, a little refinement and that could be something. You've given me some ideas.
Llama: I'm really liking those, especially the ones lower down. Has a cool symbol/glyph vibe to it
Denz: good idea...might look better without the "o", & maybe a different font, but very cool concept.
ICR: dude, I've known you here for a long time so I appreciate the effort, but a little cartoony for my tastes. Thanks though brotha! :)
Thanks for these guys, I really appreciate it. Like I said, if we go with a design that you've submitted, we'll talk compensation. I will not use anything without written permission from the creator, I've been here long enough that you guys should know my character. Hell, I sent out free cd's when I started this thing :)

First of all this is not a place to be all "you should pay for designs!" Leave that to SA-Mart or other similar places. We help out of good will because we know people asking for help. Turning that into a customer-worker relationship is not going to work.

Here's my idea, I did it in about 10 minutes in Paint.NET and it's a little rough because it's not the perfect tool for such stuff. SpamViking, if you like it I can refine it in vectors and all that jazz.

This one is more of just a concept I was playing with... something edged, forming a 7. Any bladed object would work. I don't like it as a clip-art type of image but I think It'd look very nice if a photograph of it was planned out. Even if not as a logo, it might make for a cool album cover.

Guys, you've all come up with some really amazing ideas, I'm blown away by the creativity...but not at all surprised. I'm gonna print out all the images here & show them to the band this weekend & see what they think. I'll update you then & we'll go from there. I like Ryche's idea. This is a crappy mod using mspaint. I also don't believe it hurts to ask for advice, you pretty much get what you pay for, but as said it can help you to know what you want, or at least to learn what you don't like. And who the hell knows, maybe something good comes out of it.
