well max payne was workin fine(I beat it 4 times) until my friend comes over with FF7 for the comp it required yamaha synthesiser(sp?) so we installed that and made it the default midi player. then the videos(and there are a lot) in the game didn't show and since the game required media player 5 and it was old I figured it didn't work with media player 7 so I made it the default for audio and video(*.wav and *.avi) then when it still didn't work I just uninstalled it and put it on my other comp(which showed the videos up-side down) later when I tried to play max payne after I exited the game it froze so I uninstalled yamaha synthesizer(sp?) and it still froze on exit then I made media player 7 the default for audio and video again and now it wworks fine and never crashes here's an easy to read list
1. uninstalled FF7
2. uninstalled yamaha synthesiser
3. made media player 7 the default audio and video player(.wav and .avi)
and that's it! although maybe the only one that was needed was making media player 7 the default audio/video player
please tell me if this works I just want to know if it was only on my comp

if you don't have media player 7 I suggest you get it at www.microsoft.com (http://www.microsoft.com) but once you do open media player and bring down tools, under that click on options. go under the tab called formats and make sure there's a check in front of Video File and Audio File then click ok, quit media player and try out max payne tell me if it works

I'll tell you how to fix it. Read that faq thing at the top of the forum; I was havin the same problem, but then I changed my modem properties like it said in that faq, and it fixed it. Dont ask me what your modem has to do with running games, but somehow it does

I had the same prob, crash on exit game. My turned out to be my sound card. i had Sound Blaster live! and via kt133 686b chips. Changed my sound card and it was fixed. Dont know how common it is but This is cos Live! doesnt support PCI bus mastering. Seems to be common with 3d sound cards.... hope it helps.
