I keep getting the following error when trying to run Max Payne (both out of the box and patched to 1.01):

"Maxpayne has caused an error in ~DF394B.TMP
Mazpayne will now close.

If you continue to experience problems.. yada yada.."

I get this after trying to start from the icon or from the CD Autorun. It starts to load, gives me the small splash screen then boom. I get the above error msg.

I've re-installed 3 times with no luck.

Apparently, the ~DF394B.TMP is created in Windows\TEMP each time you start the game. I suspect that its something to do with the copy protection. If I continue to try, Max will eventually load but its very frustrating. Sometimes it will load on the 2nd or 3rd try.. sometimes I can try 30 times and never get it to start.

Help!! The game runs fine when it does actually load.

My system:

Athlon 1.2
Asus A7V133
512 MB Ram
GeForce II MX
SBLive Value
Acer 40x CD
Plextor CDR
WINME

Where are you installing Max to? I think sometimes if you install it to a different drive than where Temp is located you can encounter a few problems. It doesn't always happen though. Normally Temp is on your C drive.

As a summary, the "error message" you are getting indeed comes from the SafeDisc2 copy protection not coping with your drive.

Please send email to macrovision.com with details on your cd-rom drive to help them fix this for a future release...

Unfortunately there's not anything we at Remedy can do to help you with the problem. If you have a spare cd-rom drive hanging around, you might give it a try... :-P
