On Windows 95, 98(SE) or ME, rightclick My computer and pick Properties, or doubleclick System in Control Panel. Go to the Device Manager tab, expand CD-ROM drives, rightclick and pick Properties for the CD-ROM drive you use for Max, go to the Settings tab, uncheck DMA, hit OK on everything, then reboot.

If the DMA option doesn't show up, check to see if you're running an Ultra ATA driver (Intel, etc) For the Intel Ultra ATA driver, look in the Start Menu for it, then select the Ultra ATA Companion, then look for the drive (secondary master, etc), look for the maximum transfer rate, set it for an non-DMA mode such as PIO 4, hit OK on everything, then reboot. I don't know if other Ultra ATA drivers work the same way as the Intel one or not.

For Windows XP, there is a similar path to get to Device Manager, but the DMA/Ultra ATA options will be associated with the controller (primary or secondary) rather than the drive. Set the appropriate drive (master or slave) for a non-DMA mode such as PIO 4, hit OK on everything, then reboot. It's very possible that Windows 2000 works the same way as Windows XP, but I have very little experience working with Windows 2000, and couldn't say for sure.
