About 3 months ago I started learning how to create maps with Mapster32. I'm well into creating my first map when I realised that I have been using some textures from art files 014 and 015. I have had these on my hard drive for many years probably from some mod or TC I downloaded many years ago. After some investigating I found out those art files are from the "Infinity:Secrets of the Acropolis" TC from way back in 1997. Do any of you know if anyone from that project is still around these days so I could ask for permission to use some of those textures? Or are they pretty much public domain stuff after so long?

I dont think anyone would care if you used the arts. Just give credits in your text file.

In the UK there's a law which says something like, if nobody claims copyrights etc for over 10 years, you can use it...
Dunno if this applies to thinks on the internet or in other countries either.
I think it would be OK though, i've seen it done many times before and nobody ever seems to get in any trouble, and if you credit them, that's promoting their work too right? so it's not like they could complain.

It's not like the custom art you're using is part of a commercial product anyway, so you're fine in any case. Just give credit in the readme.

I just read the text doc. for Secrets of the Acropolis. It does not say anything about not using the resources from the mod. Here the texture author:

Might also try cdwarrior {at} usa.net or csforest {at} planetunreal.com.

Yeah and IF YOU DOWNLOAD THIS ROM YOU MUST DELETE IT AFTER 24 HOURS OR YOU WILL BE BREAKING THE LAW I READ IT ON THE INTERNET IT MUST BE TRUE

Just use them and credit the original authors, I don't think they'll give a shit. They probably stole them from somewhere else anyway.

No, i read it in college when a friend of mine was studying law, and that law about ROM is actually a fortnight, you can own a pirate for 2 weeks before you must destroy it or obtain an original.

Every piece of art is copyright protected unless clearly stated otherwise.
So unless your product is fair use (Whish I doubt). You in theory have no right to use it.

Practically, I doubt anyone would care aslong you give credits.

No ones going to press charges on some 8-bit artwork from 13 years ago, except for our Benevolent Overlords.

@ marked.
As a matter of interest why are you still using the .art files as not like DOS, they are no longer necessary as long as you have the duke3d.grp file in the folder, just a thought.

The map I'm making has an ancient rome theme and those art files contain usefull textures not found in regular duke art.

LOL ... I can't believe these old textures are still floating around the internet.

Anyway, no, I don't care if you want to use them. Feel free. :)

P.S. Those email addresses are no good any more.

Nice to see an old Dukester pop up, every now and again.

I have been transfering those textures from one computer to the next for years and I finally found a use for them now than I'm learning to make maps.

Thanks.
