You can try disabling DMA support on your CD-Rom drive.

Well, I'll give you the email I got back from Talonsoft when I was having problems. Keep in mind that my problem was that the game would freeze at random times, not exit to windows when I started a game. You have probably tried most of these things:

1) Make sure you have no other programs running in the background. Press
CTRL-ALT-DEL to display the Close Program Dialog Box. End Task all programs
except for Explorer and Systray.
2) Verify that you have several hundred MB of hard drive space left for
Virtual Memory operations and that Windows is allowed to manage your Virtual
Memory Settings. You can do this from Start, Settings, Control Panel,
System, Performance, Virtual Memory.
3) If you have an anti-virus program running, disable it.
4) Download the most current drivers for your video card and sound card
directly from the manufacturer's web site.
5) Try different levels of video hardware acceleration. You can change this
in Control Panel, System, Performance, Graphics.
6) Run a scandisk and defrag on your harddrive. To do this, go to Start,
Programs, Accessories, System Tools.
7) Verify that your display resolution is set to 16bit high color.
8) Go to Control Panel, MultiMedia, Advance Properties, Performance. Lower
the hardware acceleration to "none" for both Playback and Record.
9) Go to http://www.talonsoft.com/patches/index.html and download the
lastest patch for this game if available.

Try dowloading new 4in1 drivers for your VIA chipset. It has helped someone (including me).
