View Full Version : Great games you missed out on?

What are some critically acclaimed, classic games you've yet to play, or were late to the party for? I think my list may take the cake...

I've never played any:

Quake.
Tribes.
Unreal Tournament.
Battlefield.
Star Wars: Dark Forces
Thief.
Dues Ex.
System Shock.
LucasArts/Tim Schafer adventure games (Monkey Island, Sam and Max, Full Throttle etc.)
Top-down GTA.
Starcraft.
Warcraft.
Command and Conquer.
Civilization.
Fallout.
Duke Nukem (minus Zero Hour.)
Sim whatnot.
Final Fantasy (played a little VIII)
Chrono Trigger/Cross.
Legend of Zelda (dabbled in Wind Waker)
Bioshock.
Crysis.

I was extremely late for Metal Gear Solid and Diablo II. And I completely missed the boomtime of Half-Life mods. Someday maybe I'll narrow that list.

Missed a lot of games in the late 90's (haven't played them until recent years).. Was pretty up to date about the biggest games from 2002-2005 but since then I've been missing out again as well. In both cases my problem was insufficient hardware.

Wow sawn_off, that's some list. Not even Duke3D??? I mean a couple of those you aren't missing anything much, but some of those are obviously games that one should have at least grabbed a demo for at some point.

I will say that I did miss out on the first System Shock as well, never knew about it's existance until SS2. (And I most definitely am glad I didn't miss out on that masterpiece.)

I'm sorry that I missed out on WoW for so long, my impressions on the game were totally wrong.

I did miss out on alot of games over the last 6-7 years, but I am trying hard to make up for that and have bought as much as I can get a hold of to make up for it...

Deus Ex and System Shock are my biggest two. Ive come in very late on the Half-Life series as well. Havent played any C&C until 3, which I bought when the decades collection came out; not a fan of the C&C games.

Just noticed Fallout in your list too. Yep, I missed the older ones too (and havent had the time to give 3 a good play)

Halo 2 and 3 (intentionally missed)
Rainbow Six Vegas 1 and 2 (also intentional)
World of Warcraft

Games I was late to
Wolfenstein 3D
Ultimate Doom (Played Doom 2 first a long time before I played this one)
Stalker
Serious Sam
Kingpin
The Half Life expansions (Blue Shift and Opposing Force)
Call of Juarez

I've been in such position that missing games has been more a choice of mine, rather than just missing out on them. In the 1998 I missed some titles, due having inadequate machine for awhile, but I got to play those games at friends. Guess I've been quite blessed gamewse :)

Kingpin was one of those games, I just missed on. Now I have bought that on gog.com, but yeah, I haven't really missed anything major. Except Chrono Cross which was never sold here.

First Rainbow Six, I got to play it a bit later on at friends, but it sounded really cool in the review I read. Can't remember much beyond that, Daikatana I didn't play, but the review wasn't really flattering!

Preferred SiN over Half-Life - yes, Half-Life 2 is way better than the first revision.

Thief

Off the top of my head...and games that I actually want to play:

Fallout series
System Shock
Grim Fandango
Prince of Persia (prior to Sands of Time trilogy)
Street Fighter
Elder Scrolls I & II (Arena & Daggerfall)
Giants: Citizen Kabuto
Mega Man Legends 2
Duke Nukem: Time to Kill
Shadow Man
Blood
Rise of the Triad

Tough one. In my opinion, I never miss out on great games, because I only skip games I wouldn't like.

But lots of people have told me (and all of them can go to hell) that I should play Bloodlines. So I guess I "missed out" on that, but it was by choice.

I suppose I missed out, or showed up late to the party, with many Sega Genesis titles, but it was because I didn't have one until I was 13 or 14. I also missed out on Playstation titles for the same reason, but I caught up quickly (don't think I left my room for a few months).

I'm missing out on Nintendo Wii titles because I refuse to buy one. I can't even articulate why I don't want one, either. I'm just afraid that it'll be a $250 paperweight because I got bored with the gimmick, I guess.

I don't think there are any specific games, but I've got some stuff to say about your list for sure.

LucasArts/Tim Schafer adventure games (Monkey Island, Sam and Max, Full Throttle etc.)

To be honest, you could skip the Monkey Island games. They're great, but not as timeless as Sam & Max. You could play them and end up thinking, "That was it?" But Sam & Max, Full Throttle, and...

Oh my god, dude. DUDE. Grim Fandango. The greatest of all LucasArts adventure games!

Fallout

If you played them now, you might not see what the hype is about. In reality, I don't think the first two games could ever live up to their own hype. You just had to be there.

Final Fantasy (played a little VIII)

Same as above. I worship the holiness that is Final Fantasy VI, but I realize anyone who plays it is going to wonder what type of crack I was smoking when I said it was "perfection in a cart."

Chrono Trigger/Cross.

But here.... Play Chrono Trigger. Don't ask questions, just play it. If you don't love it, if you don't add it to your top ten greatest games of all time, well... well, you have no heart, sir.

Chrono Cross takes far too much patience for most people to bother, though. Skip it.

Legend of Zelda

Another one of those "you had to be there" things. If you weren't a part of Zelda when it started, you won't like jumping into it now.

Final Fantasy series
Metal Gear series (well I beat Portable Ops and played 10 minutes of MGS1...so IDK if it counts)
Zelda series
Chrono Trigger
Monkey Island games (I got near the end of the first one and gave up)
Resident Evil (only bits of 4 and mostly the rail-shooter ones... I can't do scary games x_x)

Actually, I haven't played that many games, period...

...But lots of people have told me (and all of them can go to hell) that I should play Bloodlines. So I guess I "missed out" on that, but it was by choice.

Why? Why should they go to hell, it's a great game with great dialogue. If you play it now, you get a lot for your money. Considering the fan patches that made the game even more better. The combat is there, but the game is totally different depending on how you play and choose to play. A lot of stuff. Not to mention it's the best Vampire themed game made. Too bad it was released too bugged and rushed to the market, what a surprise. One of the better games I've played.

(Fallout 1 & 2) If you played them now, you might not see what the hype is about. In reality, I don't think the first two games could ever live up to their own hype. You just had to be there.

Well, I'd have to disagree on that. But if you belong to the group that is all about graphics and that, and can't stand few minor usability issues - then it's not for you. Fallout 1 is tighter package, but Fallout 2 is my favourite. The humour is there, maybe bit overdone partly. Fallout 2 starts with a very boring first section, the temple is one of the biggest fails in so-called in-game "tutorials". After that it speeds up, and the great dialogue, storytelling immerses you to the world. Definately not for the ADHD generation.

Playing Fallout 3, and those two, you will see what the storytelling is about. Fallout 3 lacked a lot on the writing department, but there is really so much to do with the whole Fallout theme.

I got my first PC in the mid 1990's so I missed out on most of the early DOS games. Before that, all my gaming was on a Commodore Amiga, Commodore 128, Atari 800XL and a ZX81.

The first DOS game I bought was Duke Nukem 3D. :)

From personal experience, I'd have to agree. I played FO2 only recently and just couldnt get into it. I 'wasnt there', and am far beyond late to the party, party's over and I missed it. :p With most of the stuff I missed I just accept that I missed it and move on.

Also, if a sequal that is far from true to the originals is released, I wont hate it for being that. ;)

It would probably be easier to say the games I didn't miss out on... I didn't play any PC game other then Mechwarrior 2, Commander Keen 4, and Commander Keen 6 until 2001. :o
As for a console, I only had Super Mario Bros, River City Ransom, Bubble Bobble, and Kirby's adventure on NES until 2004 when I finally got a newer console.

I literally missed out on everything...

I'm currently playing Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Quake II, and the Zork series for the first time.

The going to hell part is a joke. I still have to remind myself to douse my posts in emoticons or everyone thinks I'm omg serious business.

But beyond that, I ******* hate vampires. I hate everything that has to do with vampires and vampire mythology. I hate vampire books, movies, comic books, and video games. Do you really think I'd enjoy Bloodlines if I hate vampire bullshit so much that just the word "vampires" makes me want to throw up in my mouth?

Phew, glad I got that off my chest.

Well, I'd have to disagree on that. But if you belong to the group that is all about graphics and that, and can't stand few minor usability issues - then it's not for you. I like Fallout 1 and 2. Don't really like Fallout 3, though. I think the reason older games don't impact modern gamers is that it's difficult to take a leap back and be as... impressed or invested in it. Not saying it can't be done, but it's difficult. So if someone hasn't played them, I don't think they should worry too much about "missing out."

Yes I told you to play Bloodlines, and if I have to go to hell, then you can go to hell for telling me to put CT on my top ten list. :p CT is okay.

Oh, but, you see, I automatically disregard everything you say. ;) The Chrono Trigger remark was in response to sawn_off, because I think he'd really enjoy it. As far as Bloodlines, I'm really only talking about Hudson. He still thinks I'd like the game, despite knowing how I feel about vampires.

... In fact, because of this post, I just spent ten minutes yelling about how much I hate vampires. Again.

Chrono Trigger blows in my opinion. Earthbound is so much better.

Two completely different games. Just because they're both RPG's doesn't mean they're similar enough to say one is better than the other. They're just different. I love them both, but they're apples and oranges. If you wanted to say that a Final Fantasy game is better than Chrono Trigger, that'd make more sense.

Interesting question.
A few years ago, I could've made a huge list but now I can only put two games down where I have the feeling I have missed out on and that would be Left 4 Dead and BioShock. I still haven't played both.
Back in the days of the N64 (which I was completely disappointed with after finding out how censored Turok was here and therefore abandoning the console in favour of the PC) I would've listed Mortal Kombat 4 and Golden Eye. Golden Eye was a N64 launch title but it was never released in germany (because it's one of these evil "killerspiele") and back then, importing games was a very expensive thing (I only did it once with Weaponlord for the SNES). Since I lost any interest in the N64, I never bothered later on to obtain it. Nowadays my interest is indeed growing once more as I own a TV again and hooked up my old N64 and SNES to it. I actually might buy a second game for my N64.
Mortal Kombat 4 got me very excited when it came out but wherever I looked, they wanted ridiculous amounts of cash for it. It was the only game that was really able to reanimate my enthusiasm for the N64 after the Turok crisis but it was just too damn expensive. With my unability (or unwillingness?) to get this game, my love for fighting games withered away and I abandoned that genre for good. I still have a soft spot for the MK franchise but most of it is nostalgia and my interest is mainly limited to the 2D MK games.
When I started PC gaming, I was a huuuuge FPS nut. It was my only interest and is still my favourite genre. There is only one RTS (or RTS franchise) that caught my attention and kept it longer than a week and that is Dungeon Keeper. It became my new religion. Aside from that, I was never interested in any other RTS, therefore not missing out on them. Evil Genius caught my eye but I don't have the feeling I really "missed out" on it.
I'm totally not interested in RPGs unless they play a bit like System Shock or Deus Ex (first person, strong action focus).
A few years ago I could've given you a huge list of more or less well known FPSs I considered worth playing but never did (like Witchhaven or TekWar) but over the years I've come to the conclusion that I don't need to play every shit under the sun.
After Thief came out, I became a great friend of stealth games but I never played any Metal Gear Solid. For quite some time, that was a regret of mine buzt the more I learned about the franchise, the less I thought I missed something. Maybe I'm just not into watching ridiculously long cutscenes of my half-naked brother taunting me. I already had that as a kid.
Yep, right now there are really only two games I regret having not played.

I can't speak for everyone, but I was extraordinarily late to the Zelda party, and in truth Wind Waker was the first one I actually played. That was only because of my girlfriend at the time being a huge Zelda nut. After that I played through Ocarina (Properly on the N64) and the original immediately. Absolutely loved both as if they were brand new and now I'm one of those Zelda nuts too :)

I gotta agree with her on that I started Fallout 1 and 2 late but yeah they do not live up to much in the GAMEPLAY department also RPGs with broken quests really tick me off. For example in FO1 you find out the Fried gecko meat place actually sells human meat but you can't turn him over to the cops or when you kill him the town hates you. Also the gameplay is extremely frustrating if You pick The wrong skills. You could pick smallguns and at the very begining Of FO2 the random encounters own you because you have a crappy gun with only 17 bullets.

I have to disagree on Monkey Island. It still holds up as an adventure game but Full Throttle I found out to be a dissapointment for it was an Extremely Short game with very little Dialogue and puzzles the only thing it had going for was the atmosphere. I looked at the walktrough I was suprised how short it was. Can say anything about Sam and Max and Grim Fandango though as I haven't played them yet.

Indeed it is. I dont fully understand why Blizzard doesnt sell it still (Especially in their online store). Its not like its too old or incompatible, its roughly the same age as StarCraft, and SC's engine is just a retooled WC2-Bnet if I'm not mistaken.

Yeah true. But, did you play the multiplayer aspect of it too? :p

Why would one want to? Nothing to brag about. :p

The MP and the second half of the game are huge short comings though and really stop the game from being epic. Being released earlier wouldn't save it from already being dated in most aspects, and though the art style is nice, the graphics were dated long before they developed the game.

I'm pretty sure WarCraft 2 Battle.net came out after StarCraft. They're difference engines. WC2BNE is a port of WC2 while StarCraft... I don't know if it has any WC2 code but it's separate.

ZuljinRaynor

Why was the second half a short coming? I thought the game kept a high note from beggining to end. WEll, the techonology powering it was dated by the time it was released, duh, there was only so much they could do graphically wise with doom 2d sprite engine from 1994, and in 1996 quake was already released.

The second half is just shooting. No more RPG really. After you get the Castle, the only last real RPG thing is weather you kill the Oracle or what'shisface first. It's just gray bland huge maps that are confusing for the rest of the game.

Hmm, duh, of course theyre different, wc2 was a DOS game. :p wc2 and starcraft are completely different games, its like wondering if theres any wolf3d code in the upcoming Wolfenstein game. :p

WarCraft 2 was also a Mac game. And it was later ported to Windows. So? You arguement makes no sense. Why could Blizzard not modify the WC2 engine? Hmm?

It's not too late! ;)

The PS2 just had a price drop to an awesome $99.

good old games, gog.com? It's pretty good, I'm not a fan of anime, but it didn't bother me in that game at all.

When Shogo came out I was like in my early teens or something like that.

I just copied most of the games posted already that i have not played:

I have not played too many of the modern FPS games that are single player, so if they are not in the list, they probably should be. I just dont know them.

Starcraft.
Command and Conquer.
Civilization. (only played/bought 4)

Serious Sam
Grim Fandango
Prince of Persia series
Elder Scrolls I & II (Arena & Daggerfall) I have them but have not played them.

Mafia is the one that jumps out at me. I've been thinking of getting it for my netbook except I barely play the games I have on it now.

Wamplet. From your list I'll let to you just the games you would love to play even today.

LucasArts/Tim Schafer adventure games (Monkey Island, Sam and Max, Full Throttle etc.)
Fallout. (2)
Final Fantasy series (Play at least one, I'd suggest FF VI, IX, X or XII)
Chrono Trigger.
Legend of Zelda (Ocarina of Time is for you)
Metal gear series (Every little title in the "Solid" saga except MGS3)
Half life series
Resident Evil series (Play RE2 and Code Veronica for some classic fun, and RE4 and RE5 if you want nice shooters)
Gran Turismo (Play the latest one you can get)

That's it. You can't go wrong with that list.

No i have played quite a few, but just not nearly as many as most people here. :o

I actually have Half life and maybe an expansion or 2 that came with one of my old video cards and HL2 was gifted to me by Klaus. I just have yet to play them.

Currently playing Thief fan missions. I am trying to play all of them or most of them. Been doing that for about 6-8 months now i think.

Once I finish the maps, I will look into some of the other games. :)

Grim Fandango

Grim Fandango is a LucasArts/Tim Schafer game. Infact, it's their best imo. :)

I haven't missed out on any games I wanted to play... but sometimes I can be delayed getting them. For example I just recently picked up Half Life 2: The Orange Box for $20.

Warcraft 2 Battle.NET is hard to come buy? I gave one copy (that I got for free) to a friend a few years ago and kept the other one. Haven't played it in ages though. It was only like $20 or $30 when it came out. I'm surprised more people didn't pick it up.

Psychonauts seems to be a game I'm missing out on, as I've heard many good things about it. I might have to give the demo a shot some time.
