1. Not trying to be funny, just pointing out the idiocy of Sony in this regard.
2. It actually was around the same time (E3 IIRC) that both comments were made, so technically it's correct :p

Why wouldn't they? The part briefly before it is even better, though:
"The stages of the game will also be based on famous battles that actually took place in ancient Japan... so here's this giant enemy crab."
I always, and still do, found the "Ridge Racer" phrase hilarious. Never understood the "Giant Enemy Crab" hysteria though. Oh well, we're all different I guess.
The Ridge Racer was from when they showed something off with the PSP right? They're supposedly showing off a new/updated PSP at E3 this year.

Cause he just said that the battles were based on events that actually took place in ancient Japan before casually dropping "so here's this giant enemy crab." It's like he's calling Godzilla fights authentic Japanese history, and he's expressing locational damage with the "massive damage" remark as if it were something new and not yet understood and as though everybody is going to be wowed.

That may depend greatly on whatever contract they have with the publisher. TT would be the ones to have the e3 booth and if they're getting set to start selling copies of a game this big, there's no way they wouldn't have it at the show, unless the specifics of their deal with 3DR forbids it (which would be weird).
I'd guess when DNF is finally ready that we will indeed see him at the show again. This year? No.

I can't see how this would be weird of 3DR. I mean, it seems like they have complete control over everything even releasing information. I imagine they have a very tough contract with TT that gives them total control over even the hype.
In other news: I really shouldn't care about games anymore. School is a time consuming monster.

Is there any official booth for id software ?!!! i hardly doubt we'll see anything more than a rage trailer since it's being published by EA and EA has a booth there but not due to the fact that id software has a booth. Far as i remember, id has stopped dealing with E3 since last year.

Our departure from the ESA [in 2008] was simply because we weren't going to have a booth [at E3] last year, and that was sort of the primary reason to be in the ESA. So the story got spun into something that wasn't really accurate. And the timing was just coincidental with other people leaving the ESA. We have no problem with the ESA. I still keep in touch with those guys, and I fully support what they're doing. But it doesn't gate us from being at E3.
But what I expect is, I expect that we'll be showing Wolfenstein at E3, I expect that we'll have some new stuff at E3 that we haven't announced yet. So I don't want to pre-announce it now until I at least get a chance to talk to our partners that we would announce it with. That would be another subject of me getting my ass kicked. But yeah, we'll be at E3; it just won't be an id booth. It'll be games that will be there in other publishers' booths.
On another note, unfortunetely no DX3 on E3. :(

I'm really disappointed in L4D2. The gameplay videos are basically L4D in a sunny map. You could have seriously put lightmaps in any of the No Mercy campaigns and gotten the exact same gameplay video. Other than the new shitty survivors, there was nothing unique about L4D2 right now. And about the new survivors, what the hell? They lack that instant charisma the L4D survivors had. The first trailer for L4D was awesome; at least for me, I instantly clicked with all 4 survivors. The new ones? Not so much, they just lack the draw the original 4 had.
It just doesn't feel like something Valve would do. And what happens to L4D support? The community is going to be split between two games? It just doesn't feel right. L4D's support has been anemic and that's being generous. We got survivor mode (wow) with only one new map on it. New VS maps? Err wait, no, we just got the old campaigns rebranded for VS.
Sigh. I expect this sort of shit from just about every other developer but not Valve. It'd be like TF3 being announced right after the Medic update came.

Unless it's budget priced it's the first shitty thing Valve has done.
Selling gamers L4D at $40 wasn't shitty? That's what makes this news upsetting in the first place, isn't it?
This is a direct result of people bandwagon praising Valve for everything they do despite the very real inadequacies. Now Valve feel secure in doing whatever because gamers have been so easily satisfied. And gamers feel surprised because they somehow thought there was an un-written agreement that Valve would give them free games onward after purchasing L4D, or what?
I always knew that telling Valve they did great with L4D, a game that was worth maybe $15 being sold for $40, was reckless and setting gamers up for future exploitation. This pattern of mindless and un-proportionate praise that people seem to think is cool to give to various developers is stupid and is shooting all gamers everywhere in the foot, and now we consequently get shorter games at higher prices. Valve has never been the second coming, despite the trendy hype. They've released several watered down experiences - whether in play time, content, or depth. It makes no sense for people to complain now, they should have complained when they were being asked $40 for L4D. Now, Valve is just continuing to do what they were already doing before.

What charisma? The original group was pretty damn bland to me.
It just doesn't feel like something Valve would do. And what happens to L4D support? The community is going to be split between two games?
Like Counter-Strike vanilla, Condition Zero, and Source? Or any game in the history of gaming that has a sequel?
It just doesn't feel right. L4D's support has been anemic and that's being generous. We got survivor mode (wow) with only one new map on it. New VS maps? Err wait, no, we just got the old campaigns rebranded for VS.
So why did everyone praise L4D when it carried the price that it did while offering the basic experience that it did? It was an obvious rip-off from the beginning.
Sigh. I expect this sort of shit from just about every other developer but not Valve.
Why? Your complaining about L4D support being anemic shows that it's not new behaviour from Valve. I thought HL2: ep 1 was a total crap deal as well. What about Steam? Wasn't the initial argument that savings from not having boxes\manuals and publishing costs would be passed along to the customer? Guess again. This is Valve as Valve has been. It's frustrating, after waiting so long through un-relenting praise for them, that people are making comments now, as if they've been asleep for the last several years.

That would be taking the selling of an unfinished product to a whole new level. It's a bad idea all around, and the consumers are going to pay for it. Money for product, that's how it is with everything else in the world. That's what Valve, who wasn't in on the fans' assumed consensus, thought they were doing, and now they've been given the completely wrong message from their customers. They now think that the market is easy to appease (exploit might be the better word), and other dev houses are going to follow their example because it's been shown to work, effectively setting a new low standard.

From the bit I saw, the action isn't as sanitized as past Metroid titles. One brief clip showed Samus wrestling an enemy to the ground and then shooting him in the face at point-blank range. It's being co-developed by Nintendo and Team Ninja, so there will probably be some Ninja Gaiden influences in it.

TBH, I found Nintendo's segment extremely boring, and SONY's I didn't even finish. (I will rewatch once the replay is posted, but still, boring)
I liked Microsoft's approach of "Who cares about sales figures, we'll just show our shit to you."
Nintendo didn't really have any software that I thought would be killer, except perhaps Galaxy 2 and The Conduit.
I'm not interested in PSP software, and if there was any PS3 software that I missed, well, chances are I'd already heard of the IP and not that interested. For instance, God of War or Warhawx.
They boast some impressive numbers, but really, gotta hand it to Microsoft for showmanship for this one.
Edit - Except for Microsoft's 15-20 minute segment on The Beatles Rock Band. Like, god, it's not even an exclusive and you're focusing 15 minutes on it? Jeez. I'd rather have seen Epic's new thing than The Beatles Rock Band, more because it's exclusive and Unreal Engine 3. And what was with Ringo? Ringo seemed like a huge dick compared to Paul. Paul wanted to actually be out there, act up a bit, but Ringo was like "well, see ya."
Nintendo didn't really have any software that I thought would be killer, except perhaps Galaxy 2 and The Conduit.
Nintendo did far better than I expected. Given how fast they seem to moving away from hardcore gamers it was nice to see Metroid and Mario Galaxy 2, even if they were behind their shittastic add-ons.

Assassins Creed 2 looked great. Though when I heard the words 'Metal Gear Solid 3'/'Resident Evil' followed by 'PSP' I did face palm.

Maybe they are using a custom version of the ETQW version of id Tech 4, remember id Tech 5's virtual texturing is an extension of the Megatexture technology that was in ETQW. So maybe Splash Damage did similar modifications to the Megatexture technology that id did to implement id Tech 5's virtual texturing?

From the bit I saw, the action isn't as sanitized as past Metroid titles. One brief clip showed Samus wrestling an enemy to the ground and then shooting him in the face at point-blank range. It's being co-developed by Nintendo and Team Ninja, so there will probably be some Ninja Gaiden influences in it.
Edit: Here's the trailer in craptastic YouTube quality:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=06OYAvIJNqw
The game play portions of that video almost makes it look like a sidescroller to me... or at least a cross breed of a sidescroller and 3D platformer. It's a bit strange that retro isn't making this one though, but it could be interesting.
Also, this caught my attention... IGN just posted a three-part video walkthrough of Silent Hill: Shattered Memories for the Wii:
Part 1: http://wii.ign.com/dor/objects/14325477/silent-hill/videos/_silenthillwii_gmp_walk1_060109.html
Part 2: http://wii.ign.com/dor/objects/14325477/silent-hill/videos/_silenthillwii_gmp_walk2_060109.html
Part 3: http://wii.ign.com/dor/objects/14325477/silent-hill/videos/_silenthillwii_gmp_walk3_060109.html
The game looks better than I expected it would. It's pretty atmospheric and has some decent visuals for a Wii game. The new "Iphone like device" play mechanics are a nice touch too.
So no HL2: Episode 3 at E3 this year apparently. What a huge ******* disappointment.
Update 2: L4D2 playtest in valves room. not an expansion. pc and 360 nov 17. screen shots later at hl2.net. no ep3 at e3.
Disappointing news, no episode 3 at E3. So Episode 3 really is an ambitious project, there is still nothing to show for it!? I am surprised.

So why did everyone praise L4D when it carried the price that it did while offering the basic experience that it did? It was an obvious rip-off from the beginning.
I think it is two-fold. At this point we PC gamers are getting a little long in the tooth and we are beginning to see that our sometimes harsh criticisms can actually hurt developers. So like the folks on Wall Street who have to worry about their stock going south if they give an unbridled assessment, we want to see the best for those who we have already invested so much into. I've certainly found myself thinking twice at times.
The other half is that L4D is a very, very team based game. More so than your standard squad based game. It is also a co-op game, a format that often gets overlooked. Very defenceable despite quantity.
I want a new RAGE Trailer! Now!
I know i'm very impatient :) Yes, yes we do. At this point I almost feel bad for id. I hope the large market of post-apoc games won't give them them too much grief.

ouch, MM...
I went yesterday, and I'd like to offer my impressions of the show itself. If I hadda use one word.. I'd call it dark.
The show is notable for the things it doesn't have this year... no over-the-top skateboard parks, no fire-breathing percussionist dance shows, no half-hour entertainment where booth babes toss t-shirts and equipment into the audience, no trailers between the buildings, and the celebrity appearances seemed to be at a minimum. (Though I did miss out on Daisy Fuentes' Pilates demo yesterday, rats.)
Am I saying that's a bad thing? No. Not really. Instead of spectacle, it seemed to be about the games. I have to think the ESA is happy about that.
And yes, I took pics. Standard disclaimer though: If you are looking for screenshots or game trailers, gametrailers.com, ign.com, gamespot.com, etc cover that in detail. The pics I took are of the show itself.

The Beatles would have not existed, yes. But without George, and probably Ringo, they still would have been less. George wrote some of the better songs in the Beatles' later years, and some say George produced the best post-Beatles material (When We Were Fab, All Those Years Ago, Got My Mind Set On You [cover]). Ringo wrote Octopus' Garden, one of the Beatles' hallmarks.

I don't get why the Epic guys went on with their presentation when nobody could hear them, instead of saying "hold on, our mic's not working" and getting it fixed. I thought Cliff B seemed ticked off as he left.
I also doubt that half of those presentations were actually using real-time gameplay footage, especially the Modern Warfare 2 one. Probably was pre-recorded footage and the guy just pretended to be playing.

Maybe. Cliff should have given him his headset while he did the introduction. I think they actually cut their presentation short, because while the other presenter was fighting the boss mech, a glitch occurred and the boss vanished yet the player was still moving on top of the invisible mech, at which point they abruptly paused the game and said that's all the time they had.

Natal was impressive, but I doubt it will be used in most games. Think about it.. when you're playing something like Oblivion, do you really want to have to stand up and jog in place to run all over the map? Lacking a physical controller, there's no button or stick you could press for the simple act of moving, hense you'd have to act it out somehow. If I wanted that much exercise, I'd turn off the game console and actually go jogging... ;)
But for creating IP's that attract the 'Wii' crowd, it has potential. Just not my thing.

Only very simple games can be made for a system like this, therefore it is inherently made of fail since it will cause more and more games to be dumbed down if an interface like this will be used. BUT, it could probably be used in a complimentary role to the controller by for instance playing some FPS with your controller but as you lean IRL you can lean inside the game or something. This type of control is extremely limited, you can't even have a proper tennis game made this way.

Anyway, that Eyetoy thing I bet will cost a fortune, because that's how SONY rolls.
Anyway, personally, the PSP go is basically the PSP. I don't care about the PSP (well, MGSPW and Dissidia look cool, but I dunno).
I'd say Forza 3 looked better than Grand Turismo, personally.
Anyway, Natal, unless they have some peripherials that allow a Wii-type aiming, I don't think is really super impressive. While it's impressive what it does, it's not my thing. I'd prefer a controller to actually walking around and stuff. If they do a Wiimote/nunchuk thing, that allows you precise aiming as well as Natal's vision thing to allow "leaning" and other things, I'd probably be more interested in it.
I'm sure Modern Warfare 2 is prescripted, at least the start of it, due to "in interest of time" etc.
Also, I laughed at the bug in the Epic presentation.
Natal appears to require some work when "lifting" one's leg, as the guy's avatar pretty well spazzed out when he showed the bottom of his foot.

Natal appears to require some work when "lifting" one's leg, as the guy's avatar pretty well spazzed out when he showed the bottom of his foot.
I think that was caused more by the guy quickly turning around then lifting the leg actually. The system seemed confused of what was what for a moment and then it seemed to have matched him backwards for a moment.
Apparently Microsoft's Project Natal started out life as ZCam being developed by 3DV Systems. Microsoft bought the company early last year just before the ZCam was set to enter production with a projected retail price of $100:
http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/03/microsofts-project-natal-roots-revealed-3dv-systems-zcam/
Shane Kim from Micrsoft claims this is not the case. Natal has been under development at Microsoft for years.

Where the hell is MP3? I thought surely we would get some video of this game. Hopefully we get something before the day is out.
Rockstar stated a month or so ago that they would not be showing up at E3 at all so don't hold your breath for anything substaintial.

Well, he and George Harrison actually. But let's be honest: the Beatles would have been nothing without the talents of John Lennon and Paul McCartney. George and Ringo were essentially back-up players and had very short-lived solo careers after the Beatles break-up.

Oooowwww, so DNF wasn't at this years E3? Oh no. This years E3 sucked big time then.
Booo-f***ing-hooo. :(
Lots of great presentations for me from this years E3: Modern Warfare 2, Just Cause 2 and Assasin's Creed 2 really got my attention.
As for new IP's there's Darksiders, Split/Second and Raven Squad, all of which I'll keep track off.
And of course the games I'm already waiting for: Batman: Arkham Asylum, AvP3 and Splinter Cell: Conviction, just to name a few.
Yeah, this years E3 really sucked. :p

well i know that in the past surprises were unleashed and really cool games, now it is just some sequels, consoly games and so on. most games were announced in the past already, no nice gameplay videos (except just a few) or great new announced titles. also pc-only gaming seems dead, a pity that there are no complex games anymore so much.

Yep. Check Kotaku or oxmonline.com. Major Nelson did some "twitter" thing on it. If they can improve the framerate and support coop I'd be in heaven!
Oh, I did check these sites, but I couldn't find anything substantial; just rumours and theories. :(
I'd still love PD on XBLA. It's a great game to this day, if I still had my N64 I'd still play that shizzle.
That and GoldenEye.
And StarFox.
I have to stop now.
What the… you said the exact same thing before then the following got announced/presented:
Super Mario Galaxy 2
New Metroid
New Super Mario Bros
Gran Turismo 5
Gran Turismo PSP
Alan Wake
Left 4 Dead 2
Crysis 2
Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood
Assassins Creed II
AvP
...
You must have bizarre tastes.

Was talking to a guy at Eidos yesterday about why Arkham Asylum didn't have a deluxe version for PC, and he said no one wanted them to make one. PC sales are not that great, so that's why they focus on console games. Graphics are better on PC, he agreed, but the piracy rates suck.

And I suppose it's just a big giant coincidence that Microsoft unveils the exact same technology that 3DV Systems was working on before Microsoft bought them out.

Actually one of the cool things Natal is supposed to be capable of (and with the apparent stats very much likely to do) that will be potentially applicable for all games is head tracking. Anyone who has played around with Johhny Chung Lee's wii head tracking knows how effective the technology can be. Coincidentally Johnny was hired by Microsoft and now works on Natal.

Basically what's happened here is all the devs who were too late to jump on the 2007-2008 train showed us their played out stuff. And there's a bunch of sequels too.
So yeah, nothing interesting really.
QuiGonJ

What about Stardock? All I know recently is that the numbers on PC are like 20 copies sold to 80 pirated, so the game devs don't have to worry as much on the consoles because the piracy isn't nearly as bad. And that Microsoft itself made a console for that reason means it ain't just the RIAA "but we want more money" syndrome.

As for consoles, there's not much stopping the pirates (http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=20598). Even the cartridge-based Nintendo DS is not immune (http://www.neoseeker.com/news/10137-grand-theft-auto-chinatown-wars-leaked-protected-cracked/).

Maybe they are using a custom version of the ETQW version of id Tech 4, remember id Tech 5's virtual texturing is an extension of the Megatexture technology that was in ETQW. So maybe Splash Damage did similar modifications to the Megatexture technology that id did to implement id Tech 5's virtual texturing?

well, the 360 requires a "heavily modified" X360 unit to play pirated crap, and yeah, you can survive, and I hated the activation limit DRM on Bioshock as much as anyone (specially since I was rebuilding my system about the time I got the game), but piracy is still why we don't see as much A-list PC titles as we once did.

I would agree with that, but probably for different reasons because I think it's the perception that piracy reduces sales that is the culprit here. As Stardock has proven, you can have top selling games even without copy protection, so there's more to the story than just piracy.
Anyway, back on topic, New Super Mario Bros. Wii is drool worthy:

I just realized:
in the first Mario Bros. you could pick up a flower, and it would give you fireball ability
in Mario 3, you could pick up a leaf and it gave you raccoon flying ability
in Mario World, you could pick up a feather and it gave you cape flying ability
in Mario 64, you could pick up a hat with wings and it gave you hat-with-wings flying ability.
It seems like a tradition was broken there.

There's a growing sect of Joystiq writers who are walking away from E3 2009 with the same title constituting their Game of the Show. Surprisingly, it's not a big-budget blockbuster, or a groundbreaking advancement in storytelling, or a bold new method of how we interact with our video games. It's Scribblenauts, an unassuming DS puzzler with a massive lexicon, charming gameplay and, as far as we can tell, a large infusion of impossible technowizardry (http://www.joystiq.com/2009/06/05/hands-on-scribblenauts/).
The small team has been working on what could be one of the most creative and most ambitious DS games yet. At least, that's what they want you to believe, and after playing the game at Warner Bros. Interactive's booth at the Electronic Entertainment Expo, I do. I really do. Don't let the simplistic visual style fool you: this is easily one of the best games at the show for any platform.
