I wrote this some time in 2000 I think...
I'm no poet, but I write constantly for myself I suppose... like this.

Duke Lives

When you're fast asleep at night
Your action figures glow with light
They live, they breath, they talk, they fight
But if you wake "Poof" they're out of sight

If you look and try to see
They're right where they're supposed to be

The most you'll ever do is hear
A tiny sound that isn't clear

Some would say this can not be
But they have they're own lives you see

I fake sleep on many nights
To stay awake and watch the fights

The fights always turn out the same
Duke puts all of them to shame

He knocks the terminator down
And twists his metal head around

The ones with sabers and The Force
Do not stand a chance of course
They fire blasters fast as can be
But Duke whips out the RPG

The next in line to live the fear
Are the ones from Metal Gear
All the members Stealth or not
End up flat, a greasy spot

Then there's Blade who's bad as hell
He flips and jumps and fights quite well
Of course Duke wins, he always can
Cause we all know that he's da' man

Dukes not evil, mean or bad
My action figures are not sad

They do not "die" it's all in fun
Cause if I wake the show is done

It's just a job for heavens sake
They just clock out when I do wake

Some words I hope I never here
Those words that could cause me some fear...

"Nobody fakes sleep in my room...and lives"

Mr. Black Cat

Tonight what seems to be the loss of 3D Realms and consequently of Duke Nukem really had more of an effect than I ever expected. Really made me sad... for the fans loss as well as what seems to me the death of a dream of a LOT of peoples effort. Not just some shallow “git-er-done” short term push type effort with destructive self sacrificing blind motives. This was years of push... dedicated push... a push where people did amazing things we will not likely ever see or know had DNF come out.
Sadness...

This is how I feel tonight...

Duke Has Died...

The Duke I know has passed away
I never thought I’d see this day

The games inspired a younger me
To be things that I might not be

If I had never played the games
Or I had never yelled the names:

“A Battle Lord” or “ Octabrain”
Or all the others that remain

In a world I used to know
Were me and Duke often would go

To stop the pigs and blast the way
Into the night and half the day

To save the chics and find the keys
And bring the monsters to their knees

Shrink em, stomp em, then you’re done
Save the world, you know the fun...

Then to tip the strippers too
It’s something you just had to do...

They can’t take that away from me
I’ve lived the lives of Duke you see

I wear the shirts I played the games
And in those worlds I’ll play again

But not forgotten is the day
That I learned Duke had passed away

No more lines, so crude and tough
No more missions long and rough

So many years of waiting now
Just went away, I don’t know how

Were there mistakes or maybe blunders
But now our Duke is six feet under

The flowers I will drop tonight
On the casket sealed and tight

Of the greatest name I know
In that world I love to go

Where aliens are free to roam
Until that time when Duke gets home

I know forever I can play
With the Duke of yesterday

But Forever Duke you see
Is never and will never be.

Nukem so cold,
in a world it wouldn't
go gold
george didn't compete,
eating publishers cleats,
reading trolls of forums-free

Beta, alpha, words to shun,
all with the retort - when it's done
laughing quietly, Duke sits in corner,
looking down, on an internet full of mourners:
suck it down

Goodbye to all in the forums and good luck to every one that worked at 3D Realms.Mr.BlackCat that was amazing.I want to say this to George Broussard : if you want to sell the right to Duke Nukem Forever don't sell them to Take Two , they didn't gave you money do not make them make money out of your ideas. In your place I'd sell them either to ID Software or the newly resurected Apogee and persuade them to change the title of the game just to be able change publisher company.Good luck George Broussard and Joe Siegler , you made the BEST games and you had the most friendly company ever.

Thank you for the responses... shows the draw that Duke Nukem character has created.

Rationally, the probability of Duke Nukem Forever existing as intended is gone. Even if a game called Duke Nukem Forever comes out, it just won't be the same... the original will be lost in a the memories of this period of time. I compare it to having a girlfriend cheat on you maybe... no matter how good it is after that, there is always that bad time in the back of your mind. Maybe that is just me. <?>

Look at LameDuke compared to the release... it was all those tweaks that made it amazing rather than good.
I want answers like anyone... but curiosity is all I feel right now. I am bit numb toward the idea of Duke Nukem right now.
Again, I have to honestly say that this loss (for 3D Realms and thousands of fans) affected me personally more than I ever thought. I think this is because I sat and thought for about an hour (straight) and then throughout my work day, about the deep implications involved here. Those who keep posting “its just a game” and “get over it”, you are shallow and incorrect, and that isn’t an opinion, it is a fact. Tell poor Joe Siegler it’s just a game. Tell those guys on the front page it was just a game... yeah, right.

I am a responsible 40+ year old man with a very busy life. I am many things: I am a certified welder, (stick, MIG, Flux Core etc), PC Network Engineer (CNE, MCSE), and a legal assistant, with hobbies in many fields like programming (Pascal, Fortran, C etc), electrical engineering (electronics etc). I can build a house with my bare hands, I grow much of my own food and have practiced martial arts in several forms for more than 20 years. There are a lot of real people here with real lives I am sure.
That Point: is that I am a real person, not a “fanboy” (used disparagingly) nor am I a flash in the pan fan type of person with my likes and dislikes being socially based decisions. I like things (like Duke Nukem/3D Realms) for real reasons. I have read here for nine years regularly. With all the responsibilities in my life as above, I still made room for this dream of many called Duke Nukem Forever, in my daily life for about 9 years now. I played Duke Nukem Shareware in the early 90’s, Duke 2, Duke 3D etc. I have almost every Duke Nukem related item I am aware of, of 3D Realms origin or not. The Duke Nukem (even Nukum) character has been a part of my life since the release of Duke Nukem I Shareware.

I am genuinely sad... but only for a while. I never played Duke Nukem Forever, but I still have a sense that I have lost something. Anticipation? I suppose anticipation can be addictive. It is like after you have let her go and there is a hope that is completely emotionally based... no logic... but you know rationally that you will never see them again... you won't know them anymore.
We won't know Duke Nukem Forever... I am comfortably certain of that now.
I will always enjoy the Duke Nukem games I suppose, but it will now take on a sense of nostalgic memories rather than a living entity... formerly found in the character known as Duke Nukem.
Playing Duke Nukem 3D last night took on more a feeling of looking at images of, or watching home movies of pets or even relatives long gone. I feel like the character has died basically.

Duke Forever: It’s just a game

“Let it go, its just a game”
“Its over now, so don’t be lame”

“just move on” is what is said
by many with an empty head

So to the face of George and Joe
And all the others I don’t know
I’m certain now you wouldn’t go

To say these things while eye to eye
And see the dreams that they watched die

To tell their families “just a game”
To tell them Duke was just a name

But “just a game” is not the case
If you could see them face to face

I’ll just move on when I am done
This loss can never steal the fun
That I have had behind Dukes gun

So if its just a game to you
I’ll tell you now a thing or two

Moving on is often wise
Dwelling long can cause demise

But if the Duke is not your thing
If years of fun he did not bring

Then go your way and leave us be
Cause we are friends of Duke you see

Please don't get upset with me when i say this, but... in response to all of the above, i do believe the Duke would say "Blow it out your ass. I ain't dead yet, dammit" They were offered 30 mill for the license. I think odds are good we've not seen the last of the Duke.

Zero, one, two, three
Duke don't have time for poetry!

There's my poem.

I am not big on hope... but I would gladly take a "Blow it out your ass!" from Duke.
I welcome being proved wrong...
