Take-Two has purchased all the rights to the Max Payne brand from its developers, Remedy and Apogee, for $34 million in cash and stock. The purchase consists of $10 million cash and 969,932 shares of stock, valued at $24 million at yesterday's closing share price. Max Payne has sold more than 2.75 million units worldwide across all platforms since its launch last year.

For its $34 million, Take-Two acquires the Max Payne brand and all intellectual property rights associated with the brand, including trademarks, copyrights, characters, perpetual license to utilize proprietary technologies (including the Max Payne game engine), and rights to license fees from ancillary Max Payne brand extensions such as cinema, television and literary productions.

"This is a precedent-setting deal for Take-Two, Remedy and 3D Realms - the first time in our industry a highly successful IP alone has changed ownership hands. This deal validates our strategy for developing strong character-based games," said Scott Miller, CEO of Apogee/3D Realms.

Take-Two also announced that it is developing a sequel to Max Payne, which will be available in 2003. It is being developed by Rockstar Games in conjunction with Remedy Entertainment. <font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">

Max Payne wouldn't be the first game to have more than one web board dedicated to it, no reason why this one should move.

Why would that have any impact on these forums? Take Two can do whatever they want, and even if Max isn't our IP any longer, we are still very well known for the title.

There's nothing to stop us from making a forum for any game we'd want to. I don't know why we'd do it, but if we wanted to make a board for a game that isn't ours, say Doom III, or Postal, or Halo, there's nothing stopping us from doing that.

The continuation of the Max forums here is not impacted by the press release quoted in the first message.

Even if it did (which it doesn't), where would they move TO? images/icons/smile.gif

(I would put thate little "shocked" face here. But I can't figure out why it's purple, and that's really distracting me. I'de assume he's holding his breath, but he has his mouth open. Also, why has he been decapitated?)

Well, it's possible that he was yelling, but he's done that for so long that he no longer has any breath, so he's turned purple from lack of air and, since he's been decapitated, he has no lungs from which to draw air once again.

I don't know why he was decapitated, though. Was he a meddling kid, perchance? graemlins/tinyted.gif

3DR could make forums, but I'm not sure if they'd be Official like the Max Payne forums.

Basically, the Take 2 buyup means that unless they have a special deal about this with Remedy, that they can make Konami makers of Max Payne 3 if they wanted to images/icons/shocked.gif

Oh, how atmospheric would Max be with 10 minutes of gameplay and 80 hours of excellent-looking cutscenes and thrilling dialogue...

But there ARE limits. And unlike Konami you guys don't use 10 people for 4 years to make ice melt realistically images/icons/grin.gif
