I have fond memories of playing DN3D about 14 years ago. I'd wake up early on the weekends and play with a classmate over our 56k modems. I played on Kali for a while. Got into making my own maps which was a lot of fun (sprites!) and probably was the source of some inspiration to become a programmer/web developer. I remember I made a map where there was an invisible wall you could go in and then close off, and could see the rest of the map. From this spot you could hit a button that would bring the ceiling down on the rest of the map to crush the other player. Haha. What a great game...

I'll add a memory. Soon after the Duke3D shareware was released, I had the privilege of getting to play Joe in a Dukematch. He was better than me--I was still trying to use a gamepad, and he was on keyboard/mouse--but I did get in some cool and fun kills: a blind RPG up into the projection booth resulted in a kill, and he walked up to the center stripper and did a "shake it, baby" and got another rocket for his trouble (I was over in the corner to activate the hidden chaingun). :D The fun ended when we encountered a Sector Effector sprite in the game. It was by the teleporter that takes you from back stage to the bathroom in the bookstore. Joe said, "Oh, this is bad" and excused himself to report it or whatever. :)

For those who played DN3d multiplayer, can you remember any user-made map names? I recall a map called "Danzig" was very popular when I was playing on Kali.

I used to love everything this guy named Tempest did. He had one called Smack and another called Roq. My buddy and I played on those almost exclusively. Tempest used the medieval tileset a lot, and I started a map with them myself.

i remember being like 4 or 5 years old and hearing Duke say 'it ain't no bike, but it sure beats the hell outta walking' from the beginning of Duke Nukem:Zero Hour.

doesn't seem like much now but when i was a wee little moron that was AWESOME

Edit: well i just realized the thread title is 'Duke Nukem 3D memories' not 'Duke Nukem memories' and feel like a fool.

I also played it over modem with a guy from school, we had two phone lines at the time so my parents didnt really care. Also on some PC's at school someone had installed it and we had a few Duke matches, good times.

Oh and as far as user made maps, I remember one that was a copy of OJ's house. Also another one called freefall or something where someguy basically put this box as high up in the map as possiple then a pool on the ground.

My friend was more of the tinkerer back in the day, and modified the trip lasers to be invisible. The only way you can see them is when you have night goggles, which made them more desirable. :) Such a simple change made it a different game!

Also, I added my own mod - when the trip mine gets tripped, you hear the familar beeping, but when it explodes, you can hear "Toasty!" - an MKII inspiration. :)

We've also played it on our HS's LAN - full 8 players! It was a big deal then because before playing on the LAN, we only played 1 on 1 via modem.

Let's see... here are some user maps I remember:

Cloudwar (and all the variations -- GOD that was a fun multiplayer map)

All of the maps by Robert Travis (who I believe went to work for Sunstorm Interactive), to include:

Beta One
Beta Two
Aztec

I believe there were others, but those are the biggies that stick out in my mind that were done by Mr. Travis.

Um...

Carnival
HrtAttack

All of the Danzig maps.
Wildporn
Rooftops (and all the variations. Loved the Rooftops maps)

I actually had a Duke3D website up. Over a million hits when the counter stopped working. Gosh. I haven't updated it in YEARS. It was called Jason's Zone of Duke Nukem 3D (http://www.geocities.com/joecool_114/duke3d.html). Still can't bring myself to close up shop...

Go have a look around if you like.

I definitely remember your site, Jason. Cloudwar was awesome. It's funny how just reading the word Downtown.zip can bring back happy, nostalgic feelings.

I remember there was some sort of application that allowed you to convert Redneck Rampage maps to Duke maps. I did just that on this huge mansion map and then tried to convert all the textures and sprites, but it turned out to be a HUGE project I didn't feel like spending 12 years on. :P

A week after dn3d came out my family and i went to a family friends house. He had dn3d loaded up on his pc and it was the first time i got to play it, even though i was only young I was blowen away. Later that night we had 1v1 lans. damn that was fun.

Playing it on xbla for the first time and getting all the SP achievements.

I remember one great moment ...I first got to know Duke3d on the PS1 ..and as one of a few games it was link-cabable back then, meaning you could play something like 1-on-1-lan. A month from now it was exactly ten years ago when my best friend and I had dukematches for hours...it was a hot summer, but we sat in his gloomy room duking all day long .. one day his mother had to leave and also kicked us out of the house to make sure we'd get to see the sun once in a while..when she was gone we climbed over the winter-garden and opened the window to his room from the out-side, climbed back into the house and started playing duke again :D
when his mother returned, we sneaked back out of the house over the winter-garden again, pretended we'd been outside all the time, so she allowed us to proceed our dukematches :D
can't believe it's been a decade since then...but still in love with duke ..this love will last forever :-) (no pun intended)

My favorite moments always involved trip mines.

My favorite tactic was to get a jet pack and 3-4 mines and make my way down a manhole putting trip mines on the wall. I'd go on my merry way and start chasing the guy I usually played with and then if he got away I'd just sit and wait and BOOM. He would get very verbally creative when I did that. He came to fear manholes.

However, my absolute favorite moment was with the same firend. I froze him with the freeze ray and stayed behind him. I'd wait for him to melt and refreeze him right as he defrosted. I did this for 10 minutes once. I was laughing so hard I was crying. Mostly because of the comments he was making. "Just F^&^ing kill me already!!!!!!"

Come to think of it this friend ended up not liking to play DN3D with me. :(
