View Full Version : The .3DS file format and textures

I'm working with a few modelling tools at the moment which cause me to rely on the 3DS model format to move my models between them.

Right now I use 3D Studio Max 9 to apply some last modifications mostly involving normal flipping and texturing, but also because I know the program well enough to not have to learn another one :)

When exporting however, some weird stuff happens with the textures/materials, they appear to just vanish from the file. Importing the 3DS file into Max shows no textures... UNLESS the .Max file I'm working in is in the same folder as the texture(s).

I'm trying to convert the 3DS to a .mesh and .material file using 3ds2mesh, but I'm missing out on textures. Can anyone help me out? I can't figure out what's going wrong!

How about using COLLADA? It is supposed to be an open format designed specifically to exchange models, scenes, etc between 3D programs. I'm sure there is a Max plugin available.

Could you be more specific? What's going where?

You export from Max and Import to Max? That's how I read that.

Why are you using the 3ds format if you don't understand it? Write your own :|.

Alright, I suppose it was a bit vague. I have a 3D model in Sketch-up. I need to get it to the .mesh format. I used 3DS as an in between step as I had found a 3DS to .mesh converter recently.

That's true, but I can't seem to find any collada to .mesh converter.

This made me laugh :)

With pro version of Sketch Up you could export it to what ever formats you like ;)

But I can see your problem now.

Did you look into .skp converters already? .obj or .dae would be the best bets.

Ah I found a neat-o plugin (http://www.ogre3d.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=20481) that exports to .mesh from within Sketchup.

Problem solved in one swoop!
