Reinstalled Unreal today but I can't play it because of all those various video modes not working. The only thing that works is Software Rendering but that looks pretty ugly. Everything else either tells me I'm missing dlls (that I can't seem to find on the internet like with the S3 Metal.dll thing), or freezes or crashes the game.

Anyone know where I can find something that will make Direct3D or OpenGL work in Unreal? Been looking but can't really find anything of use.

Need unrealpatch226final.exe and opengldrv2.1.0.5.zip.

Here (http://browse.files.filefront.com/Unreal+Official+Patches/;122428;/browsefiles.html)

Thanks much! I'll get back to you if it doesn't work ;)

edit: it doesn't. Says to me something about entrypoints and procedures in "Core.dll"...
A more recent version of the opengl patch fixed that

edit 2: Tried again with a more recent patch from oldunreal.com (opengldrv2.1.0.8.zip).. If I select OpenGL as my renderer the game just quits to desktop without any error message. Now if I attempt to open the game, it just quits back to desktop.
Seems like the opengl stuff from the zip just went into another subfolder, didn't spot that.

So new problem:
Says to me something about a file called MSVCP80.dll. Then it still says it's using OPENGL but it looks just like the Software renderer. I'll go look for this dll file now..

edit 3:
Found MSVCP80 and MSVCR80.dll and put them in the System folder. Unreal now says, upon starting: "couldn't find entrypoint of procedure_security_error_handler in DLL-file "MSVCR80.dll". Then it seems to revert back to Software mode.

Problems with MSVCR80.DLL are often solved by installing this:

Theres was so many different versions of unreal it wasnt funny,i have 3.

Each one required a different method of patching.

Im curious what versions being sold on steam?

Unreal Gold is the only one they're selling on Steam. Just bought it two weeks ago. Unfortunately, Old Unreal patch 227 is required to play it on new systems, which disables the Return to Napali add-on. A patch is apparently on its way to fix that.

Me having never played Unreal went ahead and bought it anyway...don't really care about the add-on.

Return to Na Pali wasnt all that great.

Just for the heck of it,i reinstalled on my vista machine with the Old Unreal patch 227.

OpenGl gives me black textures on some models, but runs the best.
The original direct 3d 5 renderer runs the game too fast. :D
Direct 3d 9 crashes.

I have to use the direct 3d 8 renderer, which doesnt look all that bad.

Return to Na Pali wasnt all that great.

I think it was quite fun but very far from the quality of Unreal and its single player. If you'd compare RtNP to Unreal it'd feel like you're playing a mod compared to a commercial game. They also use a lot of beta stuff (monsters and maps) that was present in the earlier builds of Unreal. So some maps feel a bit awkward and out of place, like they don't really fit.

Wait for the patch I guess...
Old Unreal patch 227 was released on the 15th of May, so it definitely seems like an ongoing project.

Try a Glide wrapper.

I still want to try RtNP. While I'm not a fan of the original Unreal... it's still a solid game with some fun bits in it. It's main problem is it's length.
