It sounds weird but the GTA3 engine reminds me of the max payne engine so much, i havent been bothered checking it out though. Did you guys know that the doom3 engine uses an extremely modified Q3 engine? Pretty shocking news to me, i thought it was a totally different engine, knowing John Carmac it might as well be.
So anyway GTA3 is one cool game.

GTA3 uses the Renderware Platform (http://www.renderware.com/), which is the same engine Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 uses.
Regarding the Doom3/Q3-thing, you have to define what an engine is.
It is true that Carmack just stripped the rendererer from the Q3 engine when he did his research and wrote a new one, but since then the sound system has been revamped, maybe rewritten, and I'm sure other systems has been changed too.
and the Q3 was a heavily modified Q2 engine, and so forth... The brand new toy with the Doom3 engine is the use of shaders and keen lighting effects..
These used to be the tools of the guys over at pixar, and now are being used to render in real time, some extremely decent stuff..
I can't wait to see what the MP2 engine will look like...

I wasn't too impressed with Doom 3. It looks like those pre-rendered sequences from 2-3 years ago. It looks too nice, doesn't look real. Shouldn't we aim for real-life quality before we go beyond that into a world where everything reflects and all metal is chromed? images/icons/smile.gif
That game needs a shitfilter...

But mirrors and chrome are so pretty to look at. What makes the graphics in that game so deceptively good though is the bump-mapped characters. The poly counts aren't as high as they appear (look at the fat zombie things head) but the bump-mapping makes them look unbelievable.

Quake 1 >>Quake 2 >>Quake3 >>Doom 3
Sorry to burst you LiquiD but this statment proves otherwise,
Todd Hollenshead (Id Software Developer) sed,
Its 100% New Renderer
PCGAMER Issue 111 July 2002
Todd Hollenshead (Id Software Developer) sed,
We're going to scare the shit out of you!
There will be Skelital Animation, and different ways the blood sprays off. There is no Dismemberment system (SOF2 GHOUL 2) but shooting them in the head will prove effective and make there head fling back.
Theres my 2 cents.
