I loved Max Payne until I hit Part III. Then it would freeze within 5 minutes of playing. Reboot -> Play 5 Minutes -> Freeze -> Reboot -> Play 5 Minutes -> Freeze -> Etc. I got fed up with saving every 2 seconds and the constant rebooting. I put Max Payne on the shelf for a while. I did 2 things to my system last night, took Max Payne off the shelf, and played from Part III Chap 3 until the end with no freezes. Great game by the way.

Here are my system specs:

ASUS A7V Mobo (VIA KT133 Chipset)
AMD Athlon Tbird 900
256MB PC133 CL2 Crucial Memory
Hercules GeForce2 MX 32MB SDRAM Video Card
Hercules Game Theater XP Sound Card
30GB Maxtor ATA66 Hard Drive on ATA33 Channel 1 as Master
Iomega ZIP 250 Internal IDE on ATA33 Channel 1 as Slave
Kenwood 72 True-X CD-ROM on ATA33 Channel 2 as Master
Windows 2000 SP2 / IE 5.5 SP2 / DirectX 8.0a
BIOS with default settings except onboard ATA100 disabled

Here are the 2 things I did:

1. Start -> Settings -> Control Panel -> Sounds and Multimedia -> Audio Tab -> Advanced Button under Sound Playback -> Performance Tab -> Hardware Acceleration set to Standard (3rd notch)

2. In BIOS, set AGP from 4X to 2X

That's It. Worked for me, I hope it works for you.

Windows 2000 is set to 1024 X 768 X 16bit. I ran Max Payne in 1024 X 768 X 16bit with all settings at Medium and other options were left at default.
