Okay, over at Sega.com, on their website's forums,
http://forums.sega.com/showthread.php?t=291111
I have a poll going asking if a new Sonic game were to be made,
which would be a sequel to Sonic 3, which graphics style would be preferred. The options are:
2D (like Mega Man 9)
2.5D (like Bionic Man Rearmed)
What I'd like to do is gather up a lot of peoples to go vote one
way or the other. I'd like to think that if I get a bunch of votes,
that it may have some influence on Sonic's future. It probably
won't, but you never know.

Wouldn't surprise me if Sega added another option to the poll: "it doesn't matter either way, because the next Sonic game will be 3D, it will have some sort of stupid gimmick, and it will be absolutely rubbish".
For those of us who are ignorant, what game is this from (posted at the sega thread):

I can't picture Sonic in 2.5, so I guess I'll just say 2D. Though, I didn't like the DS games at all. But, anything's better than Sonic 3D.

Don't care as long as it's got Cream the Rabbit in it. OH YEAH.

So just to be clear, the meaning of "2.5D" has now changed to describe a game which would be fully 3D but just has a fixed camera?
2.5D... personally i loved all the sonic stages in sonic unleashed... it would have been the best sonic game on a non handheld platform since sonic adventure 2 on dreamcast if it wasn't for that damn werehog, i mean was it really going to be that hard to just swap the friggen werehog to knuckles and add a few hovering elements instead of friggen stretchy arms?!?!?!
anyway, 2.5D could be cool, but i still want the loops in full 3d :D

Its a Wii-only game, I believe.

Yeah Bionic Commando Rearmed isn't 2.5D, what the hell :o

It's changed from not making any logical sense to not making any logical sense.
2.5D is just an informal way of saying pseudo-3D. Makes sense and always has.

2.5D is just an informal way of saying pseudo-3D. Makes sense and always has.You can't have half of a dimension, because it's a discrete quantity. You either have a dimension or you don't.

You can have 2D images with angles and shading used to simulate 3D environments. Resident Evil games did this, Isometric RPG's like Diablo and Fallout, countless strategy games, and so forth.
Or you can have a bunch of 2D polygons in a 3D environment, i.e. Marvel VS. Capcom 2.
I'm guessing this back and forth is a little bit older than Quake.

You can have 2D images with angles and shading used to simulate 3D environments. Then one element is 2D and another is 3D. That doesn't combine to make 2.5D somehow. Mathematics does not work that way.

Surprisingly though, language does. It's just a name.
Yeah it's best to think the letter D doesn't stand for what it actually stands for. :)
D is for Dimensions? Get outta here! It's just the letter D :o

As Zuljin said, it's just a different way of saying 'pseudo-3D' or 'fixed perspective 3D'.
