Why on earth would you guys sell MP to Take 2?
Were you guys short on money or what?
Now that Rockstar is gonna develop this game I just hope it won't turn into the next Double Dragon(remember Tradewest) or maybe Contra: Legecy Wars.

Correct me if I am wrong, but including the stock prices of today it comes to something like $35,000,000 and post Duke Forever release etc... ...will be worth shitloads more.
As I see it this money will allow Remedy to make whatever they want to, for example Death Rally 2. Which if they do announce work on they can expect to recieve my CV.

Guys, you said $10 and $35 - read the press release again. It's more than that. images/icons/smile.gif

I was wondering why it was sold as well.
I seem to remember reading somewhere that 3DRealms was the only thing that stood in the way of Take2 forcing Max Payne out the door before it was done. images/icons/shocked.gif
Did "WID" go "Ka-Flush!" for the Max Payne franchise when it was sold? images/icons/shocked.gif

No-one forced Max out. He came voluntarily. That's just the kind of guy he is - he can not be forced.
Max Diablos:" I was fairly certain that Max Payne was a salvage job. If ka-flush hadn't happened Max Payne would've been released a year later. Take 2 didn't force it out. 3DR did. <font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">."
And the rest of that is just plain crap, too.

I couldn't have put it better myself. Where did this silly rumour start, anyway?
Did "WID" go "Ka-Flush!" for the Max Payne franchise when it was sold?<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">... and what comes to WID and Max Payne 2, it will still be released WID. graemlins/wid.gif
We can, however, finish it faster now that we have the basis ready and don't have to re-invent the wheel this time around, as Petri put it.

Is it just me or does everyone here seem to dislike take-2's purchase of the title? Since remedy is still going to be a developer it seems a bit silly. And most of the other things they've distributed have been quite good.

First of all, since we're actually only working with Rockstar (which is owned by Take2) it would be more accurate to think of Max as being owned by Rockstar, not Take2... and the Rockstar people are definite hardcore gamers as well (after GTA3 I don't think that there's anyone who would doubt this). IMO the R* people really get what goes into creating a good high-quality game, and I don't see a danger of them trying to "milk the franchise" with cheap B-class titles.
Second, to answer the original question, selling Max IP just felt like the right thing to do at this time. We weren't short of money, but this deal secured our future independence totally and gives us the freedom to start exploring new things later on.

Selling the technology just granted Take Two the rights to use it. We still retain the right to use it ourselves as well.

Ok you could have sold the game but why the game engine too?! I mean you could use it for other games right? (I know you guys have an alpha version of Death Rally 2 using an upgraded verson of MP).
Karthik

So does that mean you don't have to pay to use the engine?

You all seem to be forgetting something.
Remedy IS NOT just Max Payne. They can't have only one franchise to work with - they need to expand their ideas. Hell, they may be able to do RPG's better than action games, and now they can find out AND have aa secure future if they screw up.

Really? Didn't look like it. *snort*<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">Oh man, that was so predictable. graemlins/doh.gif
Well, to prevent the predictable from happening, I should have called it something else than a "rumor". I should have called it "a conspiracy theory devised as a really cute and clever way of saying that the game sucked." Har har. images/icons/rolleyes.gif
I really need some sleep now.

Hey, it's not your fault, Karthik, no problem. Of course people want to discuss the deal here. Those who jumped into wrong conclusions should just read the press release (http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/020522/222459_1.html) a bit more carefully.

I have a copy of the press release on our server. You might want to link to that, because Yahoo news stories tend to go away after a couple of weeks. Or they get turned into "you have to pay to view this" documents. images/icons/smile.gif
