View Full Version : I can't get Max Payne to work at all!

Before I begin, I should list everything about my system:

MSI k7t266 Pro R126-resistor RAID Motherboard

1.33ghz AYHJA Core Tbird NOT overclocked

SB LIVE! Value non-5.1

Gainward GF3 PowerPack VIVO Golden Sample, OC'd to
270/615 STABLE (problems occur both with it at stock speeds and overclocked; OC'ing doesn't have anything to do with my problems)

OS: Windows 98; XP (I have tried on BOTH OS's, not dual booting, clean installs of each specifically to try and fix this!)

512mb Crucial RAM @ 2-2-2 DDR PC2100

Netgear NIC (problems occur with it in or uninstalled)

12x10x32 Burnproof TDK CDRW

Antec 1040b case; ambient case temp 33C, CPU 47C under full LOAD

Anyway, now onto my problem.

I can get to the settings screen for Max Payne, but when I click "play" it will not even boot into it. It will load the AVI, then once I click past it, it will display the loading bar and then crash. It pops up a dialog box saying "Failed to initialize D3D_SND_ERR". I tried patching to 1.01; no luck. I've tried EVERYTHING listed in the FAQ and in posts on this forum (lowering hardware acceleration; setting 16-bit on desktop; turning off FSAA; etc.) and it still won't work. Assuming it had to be the sound card ("SND"), I disabled that and attempted to load Max Payne. It stopped after finishing the loading bar: Dialog "Please make sure your adapter supports DirectX 8.0". This is at 1600x1200x32, sound off, all settings maxed, 4X fsaa, allow apps to control FSAA in drivers.

I'm on a GeForce 3, which obviously is fully Direct X compliant. This error occurs both with 12.91 Detonator drivers, as well as the new 21.81 (better known as Det4's) drivers. If I lower the resolution (while keeping sound off) to 1024x768, it loads, then crashes saying the same DirectX error once it reaches the end of the status bar. If I run it at the same with no FSAA, I can get into the game, but no sound, no FSAA, and obviously, no fun. Trying 640x480x16, NO FSAA, with sound, it will load into the game and play, but the sound will be distorted. 640x480x32 will crash it, but run if I turn off sound. My sound works *fine* in every other game I own, including other DX8 games. The weird sound is unique to Max Payne on this system.

I've tried all of the recommendations on the forums and in the FAQ's, with no luck. Is there any hope of getting Max Payne to play on my system? My system should be powerful enough to run Max Payne with all the settings maxed, 4x FSAA, Anisotropic filtering, 1600x1200x32, and 3d surround sound, yet I can't even load it without minimizing everything down to even bilinear filtering?! The game loads and plays fine on a friend's system, so I don't have a bum disc. These problems occur with both 1.00 and 1.01, as well as with any combination of the fixes listed in the FAQ's. I simply don't understand why Max Payne won't work with my system... I *really* was looking forward to playing it, but it's starting to look like it must go to the return counter soon images/icons/frown.gif . Does anyone have any suggestions? Is 3drealms making another patch, or perhaps one of their employees could be kind enough to provide me with a few suggestions or starting points to fix this? If I remove the sound card altogether, there are no differences in how the game runs, same with my NIC, etc. Thanks for reading!

EDIT: There's one thing I can think of that might help would be to lower the SOUND CARD's acceleration, but I have never heard of anyone doing that. Does anyone know if that's possible? I'd like to try that, but I can't figure out how images/icons/frown.gif .

UPDATE: It turns out the exact error is:
D3DERR_INVALIDCALL

I hadn't remembered it correctly in the initial post as I wasn't on the same computer and couldn't remember it for sure off-hand. This is at 1600x1200x32. At 1600x1200x16, it just says FATAL ERROR HAS OCCURRED PLEASE RESTART APPLICATION in a standard windows popup.

First, run dxdiag (start menu, run, type dxdiag), then please send your dxdiag info to mpbugs@remedy.fi
Also,
- Are you able to run the tests in the dxdiag utility?
- Are you able to run other games?

Thanks, SamiV.

DX DIAG ran fine except after about 10 sounds in the DIRECTSOUND test, it failed and said "ERROR STEP 10" in a popup dialog. I've sent the dumpfile.

Have you tried running the game with card specific drivers? It seems by looking at the error, the game wants to do something your card does not support, try some different display options, not only resolution and colordepth.

That's your problem. Dump that POS.

Yes, I am able to run other games using full settings including sound. I'll run the DXDIAG and send the dump file from it shortly.

RE: Riso: Since when is that sound card a bottom-of-the-barrel card? *coughs at Riso*

Pepe: Yes, I already have without much success.

Because that POS card has problems ACPI, and VIA chipsets.
Additionally, the Liveware is one of the buggiest softwares around.

Apart from that, the analog output of even the SB PCI 128 is better.

It works fine with every other game, Rise... please stop spamming this thread with useless debate. Its topic is a problem with Max Payne, not bashing a sound card...

There is a point, though. SBLive does cause problems, especially when combined with a via motherboard chipset.

Yes, I know the 686B southbridge (the one used on my motherboard) does often cause problems with SB Live!'s, but typically it does it with all games/applications rather than just one (hence why I don't think that it's just the SB Live! causing the problem).

GoldenTiger:

1) You wrote my name wrong.
2) Remove the card and just try it without.

Yep, I just tried that and it'll go into the game at 1600x1200x16 no AA using my motherboard's ONBOARD (aka cruddy AC '97) sound. I could live with it if I could get 32bit or FSAA images/icons/smile.gif . Max Payne just doesn't want to let my system run it around much, it seems images/icons/smile.gif , although at least it's starting to work images/icons/grin.gif . I played through the first 5 levels and it's good, but the graphics aren't great because of the 16-bit color depth images/icons/frown.gif .

Wait - you have onboard sound and a SBLive? You need to disable the one you're not using in the Windows hardware profile. I had a similar problem until I did this.

Riso: I've tried doing that and it won't fix it. It crashes still with the same error as it does if I lower sound acceleration images/icons/frown.gif .

Turn all your sounds off, too. If it works with sounds off, then you should have an idea as to where to start looking.
