I installed a Gainward Geforce 2 MX several months ago.
I played many games using it, including Black & White, and Max Payne.

Yesterday, I went to play Max Payne, and it said "Max Payne requires a
DirectX 8 compatible display adapter."

I have no idea what's going on. If I run DXDIAG, I can pass the D3D
and DirectDraw tests, although the "Enable" buttons are ghosted. The
"AGP" button is also disabled.

I tried to reinstall drivers using the following procedure:

1. Switched adapter to Standard PCI VGA adapter.
2. Rebooted.
3. Add?Remove Software, removed NVIDIA Windows drivers.
4. Rebooted.
5. Upon "Found New Hardware," installed Geforce 2 MX drivers.
6. Rebooted.

I end up at the same place. I have downloaded new drivers, I have
installed the drivers from the CD that came with the card, and I
always end up with the exact same problem.

What do I need to do to clean the drivers, and install working
drivers?

Thanks!

Have you tried reinstalling DX8.0a, you could always download a newer version, I just read that there is a 8.1 beta around(use at own risk).

If you use new drivers, are they from your manufacturer or from Nvidia, since incompatabilities might exist.

Windows XP comes with DirectX 8.1 so I doubt there's any risk images/icons/wink.gif

If you are using the Detonator 12.81 drivers, then there's the problem. There is something strange there and you need to revert to older drivers. nVidia is looking at the issue.

Really? Before I bought Max Payne, I was using the ASUS version of the detonators (6.31c). I had trouble just getting the Max Payne Demo to start! So I downloaded their 12.90 drivers, was able to play with minimal problems, and that's when I decided to get a copy of the full version.

Now, I'm using an updated 14.10 ASUS driver and so far, I can still play the game, although when I tried to start the game using one of the new mods, it locks up. But it still works fine if I play an unmodified game.

So my question is - is it only the 12.81 Detonator drivers that have an issue with Max Payne? Or is it 12.81 and UP? Just want to be a step ahead of potential trouble. images/icons/grin.gif
