For me, the sound broke up only during the ending sequence after Max fired his last shot, but it stabilized during the ending diaogue.

I was able to fix it by setting everything to Medium, then turning Particle Detail, Character Shadows, and Sound Channels to Low.

I read that in a post from Remedy on the VE forums a few weeks after Max came out.
