How do I get my Geforce 2 back?

What could have caused my perfectly-functioning Geforce 2 MX to suddenly stop being recognized as a "DirectX 8 compatible display adapter," and HOW do I fix it?

I was going to buy a new game...but not in this state. Max Payne worked fine...now I can't run it at all!

Reinstall the DetonatorXP or 12.41 drivers from www.nvidia.com (http://www.nvidia.com)

I have...many times.
Can someone give me the proper procedure?

Here's what I'm doing:

1. Change adapter to Standard PCI VGA adapter
2. Uninstall NVidia Windows drivers (using Add/Delete Programs).
3. Reboot
4. "New Hardware Found," I point it to the new driver.
