View Full Version : Question about BIA:HH and BF:BC2 destruction

Is the destruction in HH pre-canned for sequences like building/belltower destruction? I understand things like fences and such are more dynamic ala Crysis trees.
Same thing RE the new Battlefield. The building destruction looks really nice, however is it pre-canned (like FEAR2 pillar destruction) or actually physics based?
I'd ask this on their respective forums but I like frequenting here instead.

Well, i'm on the Bad Company 2 beta test team for PlayStation 3 (via RLS) and you can destroy just about anything that's not absolutely imperative to the mission.
Seriously, almost the entire map can be destroyed.. it's quite fun
As far as BiA:HH, I would ask Damien_Azreal. He would know best on that subject.

BiA doesn't have destructive environments IIRC. If anything can get destroyed it cause it's scripted.

In BIA certain cover objects are destructible. As far as the buildings and such though, all non destructible.

but bare in mind, the particles from the exploded houses in BC2 vanish after several seconds... over 2 years or so, I hope that won't be the case anymore...

Well i would say from oversving the gameplay videos of BF:BC2 that the destruction is not procedural (Like say red faction) but it is sort of half-scripted. Even though most things can be destroyed, blowing up a wall will most likely cause the same hole each time if that explains it for you.

Yeah thats what I was looking for. So its gonna be something like predefined breaks or baked animation for destruction where you'll see the same rubble or maybe a repeat of few templates of rubble after each explosion.
Thanks.

Well it's dynamic in the sense that they fall according to physics, not pre capped animations.
They build the buildings in segments and they probably have a pretty complex scripting system in place which calculates as long as these and these segments of the building are still standing the building is ok, when you bust that integrity they just enable physics for the segments still standing and let them fall naturally. It's like a House built of lego's, you can chip of the invdividual pieces but you can't break the brick.

In BiA:HH most objects you can use as cover are destructible. Such as wood fences, sand bags and such. Desks and other wood objects in buildings.
There's certain areas that can be destroyed by a bazooka blast... high towers and windows.

BIA:HH uses UE3, right?
Here is a tutorial on the fractured mesh system that is in the UDK: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WLaxPKCeLaY

Yes, Hell's Highway uses UE3.
