View Full Version : What's the verdict on Duke 3D for the Ipod Touch/ Iphone?

So I received an Ipod Touch 8GB G3 as a Christmas present over the holiday season, and even though I'm not one for Apple products, I have to admit that this is a pretty slick device. Anyway, I've been looking for some games to buy for this thing over the app store and I noticed that there is a version of Duke Nukem 3D available for it.

Has anyone here played it? Is it any good? Most of the reviews in the app store are pretty negative, claiming that this game has broken controls. But can anyone here confirm or deny this?

Granted, the game is only .99 cents, so it's not like it's a big investment. I suppose I could just buy it and find out for myself, but I'm still curious about what you people thought of the game... If anyone here has played it, that is. :dopefish:

I know it did have broken controls and supposedly those got fixed but I have never played it nor own an Iphone/Itouch.

Eh, I didn't think I would get many responses in this thread.. . but thanks for the heads up on the patch anyway, ryche.

For $0.99 cents I may as well just pick it up and post my impressions on the game here. How bad of a purchase could it really be? :p

Wait! Hey man. I've got it, and it isn't bad, but the controls aren't too good (it's a touch. whaddya expect?), and the game has the 360 Arcade font. You can save it, but the music isn't on the game! Other than that, it's just duke on the ipod/iphone.

Well, I bought the game earlier today, and this seems to be about right.

I haven't put much time into it yet... but some far the controls are pretty cumbersome... The game does give you two alternative controls methods "digital" and "dual analogue" and so far I find the analogue controls to be the best. But you can also change the locations of the controls in the screen, and tweak a few things as well. I haven't messed around with it enough to find a suitable control scheme. I don't find the controls to be quite as intuitive as other Ipod/ Iphone FPS's that I've played, like N.O.V.A or Wolf 3D classic.

As for the game, well, yeah it's pretty much Duke 3D without any in game level music. The game runs pretty smooth too... I haven't noticed any frame rate issues yet... Overall, its not too bad considering how cheap it is. :p

Also I took a few screenshots running directly off my Ipod, for those who are interested....

I got it for my iPod touch. Graphics and sound are the same. There's no music, except at the title screen. The default controls are appallingly bad. You can play 3D games on an iPod but the touchscreen really isn't a substitute for a decent controller.

I hope ROTT will have better controls, as im thinking of getting an itouch anyway.
